Lincoln or Link?

Still no closer to finding a name for our boy. 😭

We like Linc as a shortening, so can we just get away with that maybe? Or just name him Link and be done with it? We're drawn to more alternative/unusual names.

If we go for Lincoln, is it too surname-sounding? It's pretty well established as a first name now, but DS will have both my surname and DP's (which is a bit longer), so not sure.

Go for broke and call him Lincolnshire. (joke)

Sorry I found naming incredibly difficult too. Finally pinned it down just before primary school registration.

DappledThings · 12/10/2024 15:07

Lincoln is OK, not my taste with the whole surname as firstname thing but could be worse. Link is utterly preposterous.

Osirus · 12/10/2024 15:08

Please do not call your child Link.

EwwSprouts · 12/10/2024 15:08

Call him Link and he will forever be tagged the Missing Link. Lincoln is fine, stop trying to be super different.

Needmorelego · 12/10/2024 15:09

I'd assume you are a big Grey's Anatomy fan.
It's a surname really. Not great as a first name.
Sorry 🙁

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 12/10/2024 15:12

I hope your surname isn't Din!

Wouldn't be my choice at all, but if you're determined, you'd be better calling him Lynn - at least that is a name, and you do hear of the (very) occasional male called it.

Tulipvase · 12/10/2024 15:21

I’d use Lincoln and Linc as a shortening.

samedifferent · 12/10/2024 15:33

Lincoln is a reasonable name, Link suggests a super gamer to me.

I’d assume a a Legend of Zelda fan and lots of elf jokes.

PiggieWig · 12/10/2024 15:42

I think Lincoln with Linc as a nickname. As others say, I think of Legends of Zelda, which is a nice game but possibly a bit marmite when it comes to naming a child.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/10/2024 15:47

Lots of boys' names are also surnames: George, Arthur,John, Christopher, Michael, Andrew, Philip, Oscar, Thomas, William, Mark, Peter, Joseph, Joshua....

So I wouldn't be too worried about Lincoln in that context.

Moreteaandchocolate · 12/10/2024 15:50

I really like Lincoln nn Link 😊

Needmorelego · 12/10/2024 16:01

@KnickerlessParsons most of those names aren't surnames 🤔

Yes they are.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 12/10/2024 16:09

Link? 😳 Sorry that’s an awful name!

Lincoln is fine if this is where you’re settling. Maybe Lachlan? To be shortened?

CallYourselfAChef · 12/10/2024 16:10

Link?! Really? No.

Crazyeight · 12/10/2024 16:11

How tall are you? My DH wanted link (Zelda fan) and Lincoln as a longer name. But as DH and I are both small-average height and have some shorter people in our family trees we didn't want to risk him forever being 'dinky link'

I think Peter is a biblical name and they didn't have surnames then...

I can't think of any people I've heard of with Oscar as a surname, but all of the rest are common surnames: either as they are or with an 's' on the end.

AmeliaEarache · 12/10/2024 16:19

You can't name a child Link, OP! The poor kid - Zelda references following him around his entire life. You might as well call a girl Lara Croft.

Haha. My first though was linked in too

Yes, they effectively did, but they were usually their occupation or where they lived/were born - which is how most modern surnsmes originate as well.

The population then was a fraction of what it is now, but there were still plenty of people with the same first names, whom others needed to distinguish between!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/10/2024 16:29

My first thought was Prison Break.

Seems I'm completely out of touch 🤣

EngineEngineNumber9 · 12/10/2024 16:34

My first thought with Link would be Link Larkin from Hairspray. My first thought with Lincoln would be Ilana’s boyfriend in Broad City played by Hannibal Buress.
