Lincoln or Link?

Still no closer to finding a name for our boy. 😭

We like Linc as a shortening, so can we just get away with that maybe? Or just name him Link and be done with it? We're drawn to more alternative/unusual names.

If we go for Lincoln, is it too surname-sounding? It's pretty well established as a first name now, but DS will have both my surname and DP's (which is a bit longer), so not sure.

Lincoln, not Link

Then if he doesn't like Link he can choose to go by Lincoln or Lake/Coln/Ink/Lynn etc

My first thought was Prison Break.

Seems I'm completely out of touch 🤣

Yeah, my mind immediately went to Link the Sink, too. Not as pretty as his brother though.

SeatonCarew · 12/10/2024 17:50

Try again.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/10/2024 17:51

I like Lincoln shortened to Link.

Yes, they effectively did, but they were usually their occupation or where they lived/were born - which is how most modern surnsmes originate as well.

The population then was a fraction of what it is now, but there were still plenty of people with the same first names, whom others needed to distinguish between!

The biblical figures who were Israelites/ Judeans used "bar", "ben" /and "bat" [father's name], meaning "son of"/ "daughter of".

Lots of boys' names are also surnames: George, Arthur,John, Christopher, Michael, Andrew, Philip, Oscar, Thomas, William, Mark, Peter, Joseph, Joshua....

So I wouldn't be too worried about Lincoln in that context.

They have migrated from forename to surname. Some are extremely unusual as surnames (Joshua, Oscar, Michael, Andrew, William?)

In the case of Lincoln, it is both a surname and a forename, but primarily a surname. The surname probably originated from the place name.

Not sure how I ended up with a gin bottle there.

I had typed "father's name" in square brackets.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 12/10/2024 18:19

Also thought of Prison Break. I'd assume you were a fan too as the other two Lincolns I know are named after the guy in the show 😁

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 12/10/2024 18:22

If his job had anything to do with computers I think the obvious nickname would be 404. The code for a broken link.

Carouselfish · 12/10/2024 18:48

I like it op. Lincoln nn Link. Nice sound. Helped abolish slavery/Zelda/Rhett and Link. It's got a nice sound to it and all the objections raised have been quite out there objections.

GoldenSunflowers · 12/10/2024 18:53

Not a fan, the ending kind of catches in your throat. I might be pronouncing it all wrong.

normanprice62 · 12/10/2024 19:05

Not a fan of link. I like Lincoln, it's my sons middle name.

I’d use Lincoln and Linc as a shortening.

This

Faldodiddledee · 12/10/2024 19:45

I don't know Link/Linc as a gamer name (don't play) and it sounds good to me! Better than a lot of boy names. Prefer it to George or Barnaby or Malcolm. I think it's cool!

deliwoman1 · 13/10/2024 07:51

Ha! Well that’s pretty definitive!

I don’t dislike Lincoln but DP is super dyslexic and concerned about too many letters in DS’s name, just in case he’s dyslexic too. 🙂 He’d definitely be Linc at home for short, but we’re not gamers at all! Or Gray’s or Prison Break fans! I’m not sure either of those shows will stand the test of time as a definite reference for the name though…

Nicknames (or diminutive names) tend to occur organically. You may plan to call little Mackenzie Mac, but the chances are a/he will be known by all and sundry as Ken, Zee or Bo-Bo, after the cute little sound they make.

RedWinePoliticsAndHair · 13/10/2024 09:32

Fucking yikes re: Link. Don't do that. Please, don't do that.

The biblical figures who were Israelites/ Judeans used "bar", "ben" /and "bat" [father's name], meaning "son of"/ "daughter of".

Very true. Same as today, really, in names like RobertSON, JohnSON etc., or just shortened to 's' e.g. WilliamS, PeterS and the like.

Don't Mc, Mac, O' and ap actually still mean exactly that - 'son of'? Very patriarchal, of course, although Iceland (for one, at least) still has women's surnames ending in 'dottir'.

deliwoman1 · 13/10/2024 18:56

We will absolutely call him Linc if he ends up being Lincoln. It'll become a lazy habit, I just know it!

I did know about Zelda but because we're not remotely into gaming, and nobody we know is, it didn't bother me so much. At least it's iconic in that respect! Gamers bloody love Zelda, right? I'm just reaching atm, highly unlikely to stick Link on the birth certificate.

Just finding boys' names very hard.

I'm also not worried about the name being like a surname per se (in fact I usually like those kinds of names). More that DS will have two surnames already, so adding something that sounds a lot like a third might be too much.

While it’s not my personal taste, I think Lincoln would be fine - it’s familiar to some people from Prison Break and there are bound to be more about in the future (most American names drift over here eventually and there are probably a fair amount of US kids named after the President). Some people might assume he was conceived in the town or something , but does that really matter? 🤣

I wouldn’t do “Linc” as a full name - there are bound to be “missing link” jokes once he’s older and to be honest, it does sound a bit odd as a name, sorry.
