I love the name. Think it's understated & would travel well. Also think it's quite classless & can't be judged too quickly.
Any opinions?!

I agree with everything you’ve said - it’s a lovely name that’s familiar, but not overused and suits all ages. No issues with spelling / pronunciation, travels well, not tied to any particular class or era.

I know 2, one is now a young adult and a lovely woman, the second is a close friends daughter and she is a great kid, eldest of 4 and amazing.
I'm Irish and I really liked it.

Downwardpuppy · 11/10/2024 14:17

Thanks, it's my favourite name at the moment! I just feel one can't make an assumption with Molly, could be from any walk of life!

I've alway loved the name Molly but my sister used it for her dd so I couldn't use it

sadeightiesthrowback · 11/10/2024 17:22

Molly ( formerly a diminutive name for Mary) is a lovely name; a classic and very popular through the decades. I have a great aunt named Molly, and she gets Moll as a family n.n. People love to give nick names, but Molly is a really nice name and ages well.

coxesorangepippin · 11/10/2024 17:23

I personally don't like it

It sounds childish

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 11/10/2024 17:27

I love the name Molly! My mother is 94 and made friends with a Molly during Covid time walks. She was just old enough to be a Land Girl during WWII - whereas my mother was too young. Equally I know a five year old Molly and it suits all ages.

casapenguin · 11/10/2024 17:28

I find the popularity of Molly very surprising, reminds me of cocaine or a ‘gangsters mol’. It also currently makes me think of Love Island which has seen two successful Mollys. It was supposed to be one of my middle names but my parents decided against it and I’ve always been vaguely glad I swerved it.

Changingname1988 · 11/10/2024 17:29

I agree it’s a lovely classless name, although have to admit my first thought was MDMA…

casapenguin · 11/10/2024 17:30

Although jokes on me as it actually refers to mdma! Was convinced it was cocaine. Anyway that’s always enough to put me off.

GretchenWienersHair · 11/10/2024 17:31

My mind went straight to drugs. Maybe because of the thread title (“a molly” rather than just “Molly”), but now I’ve made the association I can’t get it out!

Mary is better.
Molly is a sweet ingenue name.
It doesn't pass the High Court Judge test.

Singleandproud · 11/10/2024 17:34

I prefer the Mollie rather than Molly. Molly is too close to Dolly for me and childish and overall the name has far too many possible rhymes that could lead to teasing.

BarbaraHoward · 11/10/2024 17:34

I don't love -ee type names for girls but I don't mind Molly. I know a few little ones (I think it might be more popular here in Ireland) and they're all lovely little girls from lovely families. I know the odd Mollie too, but prefer Molly.

Smartiepants79 · 11/10/2024 17:34

I love it.
Classic and timeless. But not too common.
All the Mollys I know are great people.

autumnbake · 11/10/2024 17:36

It's beautiful.

I had a good friend called Molly in secondary school (2000's). She was quite posh and horsey, and I've always associated it with that.

MagneticSquirrel · 11/10/2024 17:39

Childish. I can’t imagine a Prime Minister Molly!

Whereas Mary is a great name.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 11/10/2024 17:41

Can’t stand it. It is very popular/common now though. There are far nicer names imho.

singswithitsfingers · 11/10/2024 17:42

I associate it with very frumpy older family member. Or Milly Molly Mandy. Aware I'm showing my age there! Would agree with poster above that it doesn't pass the high court judge or pm test.

Ditto this

Pinknotpurple · 11/10/2024 17:42

Molly sounds like a kitchen maid to me, I must have read too many novels set in the victorian era

honeylulu · 11/10/2024 17:43

Don't like it. It sounds silly and babyish and like the parents couldn't be bothered to think of a proper name.

PumpkinScarf · 11/10/2024 17:44

I prefer Polly

Wolfpa · 11/10/2024 17:44

My first thought was drug related, my second thought was the amount of animals I know called Molly but if you think too hard about it all names have their draw backs.

LeavesTrees · 11/10/2024 17:44

I’ve known 3 - all lovely people.
I like it, no connotations to it. It’s classy and works well on all ages.
