I love the name. Think it's understated & would travel well. Also think it's quite classless & can't be judged too quickly.
Any opinions?!

I know three Molly’s
mid 20’s
a spaniel (4?)
and a collie (12)
I think it suits the spaniel best

Lovely. A bit retro and also classic.

I know one and she's just qualified as a lawyer.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 11/10/2024 22:56

I have a Molly. She's wild, bonkers, hilarious and brilliant. All the Molly's I've ever known are wild and strong and brilliant! I am still absolutely in love with the name!

Mary is better.
Molly is a sweet ingenue name.
It doesn't pass the High Court Judge test.

Well, neither did ‘Mary’ until a short time ago. Change is good 😀

Thunderpants88 · 11/10/2024 23:01

I find it a sickly sweet name that is childish

ThomasPatrickKeatingsDegas · 11/10/2024 23:03

The two I know are an aristo and a young woman who married an aristo. Both very sweet, feminine and suited to the name.

Of course most high court judges are called John.

There's no girls name that passes the high court judge test.

So I think it's fine if Mollie plans to smash that glass ceiling.

MumChp · 11/10/2024 23:09

Molly is a great name!

BarbaraHoward · 11/10/2024 23:36

Do we really still think Molly is a diminutive and not a formal name? Surely we're past that now. Unless all of those posters wouldn't use Jack either.

Enko · 11/10/2024 23:42

I find it a very safe kinda dull name. Like Jane, Anne, Emily.
Not offensive but nor do I think its beautiful

Screamingabdabz · 11/10/2024 23:51

It reminds me of a book I had as a child ‘Milly Molly Mandy’ - she always looked like the biggest boring drip of a girl on the front cover so I never read it.

leccybill · 12/10/2024 00:03

I teach a million teenage Mollys.
It's a forgettable name, like Ellie, Evie, Ava.

I wouldn’t use Jack. It’s aggressively dull.

Not the point though. Is it a proper name or a diminutive/nickname?

Some sites say that Jack is a stand-alone name as it doesn't have connotations to John, which has Biblical connections.

Seems over time that it's become not just a diminutive name for John but also an independent name.

I think I would prefer John as the given name ( since so many object to a NN for people in official or professional positions) and go with Jack until John was 'needed' to look and sound 'important' lol.

Name Molly has been a stand-alone name for a long time.

My auntie was just like this, I loved her. She was Mary but adopted the name Molly.
I really like the name and never knew about the drug nickname.

StMarieforme · 12/10/2024 12:23

Earthy. Back to nature. In tune with herself. Comfy in herself. Confident. Loving.

I see it as a diminutive but a more solid one than say…Teddy, Charlie, Alfie, Albie, Archie etc

BeaLola · 12/10/2024 13:49

My first thought was curly hair (!)

I like it but I love Mary

NewDogOwner · 12/10/2024 14:11

I like her already.

Pyjamatimenow · 12/10/2024 15:46

An unfortunate urchin in a Catherine Cookson

bengalcat · 12/10/2024 15:49

I think it’s a lovely name

1AngelicFruitCake · 12/10/2024 16:12

I think Molly sounds like a sweet, lovely person. Despite that I know two and both are madams!

garlictwist · 12/10/2024 16:14

It makes me think of MDMA but perhaps that's due to my misspent youth...
