Thoughts on Enzo and Ezra

I prefer Ezra but don't like the connection to George Ezra, and feel it's maybe a bit popular now.

I love Enzo too but there is something about it, and I can't put my finger on it, that makes me hesitant to use it.

Overused was probably the wrong word to use, on reflection I meant it feels like it’s gotten a sudden spike in popularity so is common as a name right now but was hardly known at all a decade ago, names which quickly gain popularity are more likely to quickly lose popularity than a ‘classic’ popular name I think. I should have said it feels more like a ‘trendy’ name but one that likely won’t stand the east of time. Ezra feels different to names like Isaac and Elijah because in the last decade it has jumped from not even making the top 200 (and 20 years ago being around #600) to being in the top 50. Isaac has been fairly reliably somewhere in the top #100 over the last 30 years

I agree on Arlo being worse than Ezra if you want to avoid popular or dated, 30 years ago 0 babies were recorded with the name and has jumped from around #300 a decade ago to the top #20 now, probably why it gives me similar vibes to Ezra! I wasn’t only suggesting names which are less overused than Ezra, I was suggesting names which I think someone who likes Ezra may also like.

Edited

Fair points! I see what you mean about the spike in popularity.

I know an Enzo. Sounds like something from sesame Street or muppets to me.
Ezra OK but reminds me of pretty little liars although that wouldn't be an immediate connection for anyone else.

Every Theo I have met has been lovely. Again, don't love the name but better than the other two.

FayCarew · 06/10/2024 18:36

Babies called Arlo in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
#18 in 2022

Compare it with Thomas, which was #19 in 2022

Theo definitely won't be the first name.

What about Axel? Leo? Cosmo? Myer? Rourke?

For context our other DC have quite "unusual" names that I've only heard once or twice outwith our family.

Enzo and eizo make me think immediately of assassins creed.
If you weren't Italian I'd just think you were gamers

i still prefer Ezra but Enzo is nice too.

Tbf ... they are a great series of games Wink

Enzo is a bit quirky but I like it. A former colleague named her boy Enzo about 10 years ago, neither her or her husband were of Italian heritiage.

I dont mind Ezra, however its sudden rocket in popularity would put me off.

91BlackCat · 06/10/2024 21:36

One of my cats is called Enzo.

Ezra is very popular at the moment.
At the nursery I work at we currently have 25 under 3
If it's popularity isn't off putting then I without with that

25 boys called Ezra? That must be a massive nursery.

I love Leo but it’s very popular atm. I like Enzo and Ezra much better than this list 😊

I like Cosmo a lot.

I like both Enzo and Ezra too.

Not keen on Rourke.
Leo is lovely (also Leon).
Axel is nice.
Myer - I'd spell it Meyer, not bad.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/10/2024 22:34

Ezra for me. George Ezra wouldn’t even occur to me since Ezra is a reasonably popular/well known name now - in fact unfortunately Ezra Miller would probably occur to me first. Objectively it’s a nice sounding name though and Ezra Theo John works well.

I should love Enzo (and I do really like the full romantic sounding Lorenzo - though that may be hard to pull off without some Italian links), but for some reason I associate Enzo with Bozo or Gonzo - so a bit clowny. I do like similar Elio though? And cool palindrome Asa as another option instead of Ezra?

I love KOBY but DH hates it.

Have a pet called Zeke so that's ruled out lol otherwise yes!

Enzo is very popular as a Spanish (language) name right now - in Spain, Latin America, USA. It may also be a shortening of names like Lorenzo, Vicenzo, etc. The pronunciation is a bit different from the Italian, with a shorter first syllable (ehn rather than aiyn) and the z pronounced as s rather than ts. I like it.

ImADeadGirlWalking · 07/10/2024 10:20

I have come across so many dogs called Enzo, so it's not a human name, in my opinion!

Ezra is okay. Just think it sounds more like a man's name than a baby/child's name.

KittieKath · 09/10/2024 03:27

Axel i find quite harsh.
Leo also very popular.
Cosmo is cool.
Myer - don't know this one, does it sound like Maya?
Don't like Rourke

What about Blake? Ryker? Oban? Lennon?

CurlewKate · 09/10/2024 04:45

"Ezra is okay. Just think it sounds more like a man's name than a baby/child's name"

Isn't that a good thing?

sadeightiesthrowback · 09/10/2024 19:19

Prefer Ezra to Enzo, can also be spelled Ezrah.

Enzo reminds me that there used to be a Ferrari Enzo, a while back I think.

Cenzo, short for Vincenzo, is a similar name, but as always, you have to consider how it would ( or could) be pronounced.
