Thoughts on Enzo and Ezra

I prefer Ezra but don't like the connection to George Ezra, and feel it's maybe a bit popular now.

I love Enzo too but there is something about it, and I can't put my finger on it, that makes me hesitant to use it.

Enzo is awful! Sounds like something you use for heartburn!

New: 'ENZO by AstraZeneca. Contains esomeprazole! Douse that acid reflux now!'

Yep, go for Ezra out of those 2 names @OnNaturesCourse

!

classicslove · 06/10/2024 14:31

How about Enzor, not used much these days. Old Derbyshire name as far as I know.

KittieKath · 06/10/2024 14:47

I know so many Ezras! All aged under seven. We have to have diff names for them all so my son knows who he is having over for a playdate. ha ha!

What about Elio? Or Eli / Elijah?

cassy16 · 06/10/2024 14:49

Both trending names over the last 2 or 3 years the fact enzo got so popular stopped us using it for our son instead I went with a family name Stanley the name of my grandad

IsThePopeCatholic · 06/10/2024 14:50

Enzo if you’re Italian.
Ezra sounds quite ugly to me. Not sure why.

cassy16 · 06/10/2024 14:53

Or…

instead of having 4 names he could just be Theo John … surname…

MinistryofThyme · 06/10/2024 14:53

Elijah? Oren?

I would think it a bit odd to call a child Enzo if you're not Italian. I like Ezra a lot but it's become too popular so I worry it will date badly.

Inigo? Zev? Isaac?

needhelpwiththisplease · 06/10/2024 14:54

Ezra is very popular at the moment.
At the nursery I work at we currently have 25 under 3
If it's popularity isn't off putting then I without with that

MolkosTeenageAngst · 06/10/2024 14:59

Ezra is fine but a bit overused. Not keen on Enzo, agree with those saying it sounds like a muppet or monster name. Lorenzo is better but maybe not it you don’t have any Italian or Spanish heritage.

Names with a similar vibe to Ezra for me would be:

Elijah
Asa
Asher
Arlo
Lazlo
Isaac

vincettenoir · 06/10/2024 15:03

Elio is nice but it is from Call Me Ny Your Name which is the most sexually charged novel I e ever read.

Eggbuttie · 06/10/2024 15:03

LOVE Ezra, slightly biased as I have a 7 year old one. He's the only one in his whole school, wonder if that will change if its been increasing in popularity.

We also like ozzy which has the z sound

Radiolala · 06/10/2024 15:07

Asher?

twentysevendresses · 06/10/2024 15:14

Both these names sound like they belong on The Muppets, so it's a no from me 🤷‍♀️

YouveGotAFastCar · 06/10/2024 15:17

You'll get asked CONSTANTLY about Italian heritage with an Enzo/Lorenzo. I am glad we have some 😅 People will also call him Lorenzo - which is fine for us, as that is his name, but he introduces himself as Enzo and I only call him Enzo, so he often corrects them. And yet they still default to Lorenzo!

I'm not sure George Ezra is a current reference. I think he's retired? There's been no new music since '22, and he isn't touring or anything. It wouldn't bother me.

All my children have four names.

There are hundreds of thousands of British females with Italian names and no one thinks that odd.

Ezra would be my choice. It's lovely and I wouldn't worry about it trending. There are far fewer children with 'popular' names than you might think. Ezra is top 50, that is approx 1k born a year.

Evidence: names.darkgreener.com/#ezra

CalliopePlantain · 06/10/2024 15:47

I really like Enzo/Lorenzo. I’ve not met another and I have 4 children early primary to late teens.

Ezra is pretty popular near me but it’s quite nice/inoffensive.

similar vibe/feel to me

Jude
Ellis
Seth
Vincent/Vinny
Asher
Levi
Micah
Josiah

Jsogs · 06/10/2024 15:58

Enzo is awful. Sorry. Ezra is passable but so over used.

housemaus · 06/10/2024 16:08

I would think you were Italian and/or a Ferrari fan with Enzo I think!

Ely? Eben? Eden?

Skybluepinky · 06/10/2024 16:48

Ezra is really popular and Enzo is a dogs name, which other options?

I don't think Ezra is "overused", in the latest statistics (2022) it was ranked 46th in England & Wales, there were 1,217.

You suggested Arlo which is much more popular; it was ranked 18th and there were 2,176.

Isaac and Elijah were more popular than Ezra in 2022, too.

As for the PP who said that Ezra is "overtaking" Noah - um nope, Noah was first place with 4,586. Even if Ezra's popularity has gone up and Noah's has gone down over the last 2 years, that's a big gap to close!

Overused was probably the wrong word to use, on reflection I meant it feels like it’s gotten a sudden spike in popularity so is common as a name right now but was hardly known at all a decade ago, names which quickly gain popularity are more likely to quickly lose popularity than a ‘classic’ popular name I think. I should have said it feels more like a ‘trendy’ name but one that likely won’t stand the east of time. Ezra feels different to names like Isaac and Elijah because in the last decade it has jumped from not even making the top 200 (and 20 years ago being around #600) to being in the top 50. Isaac has been fairly reliably somewhere in the top #100 over the last 30 years

I agree on Arlo being worse than Ezra if you want to avoid popular or dated, 30 years ago 0 babies were recorded with the name and has jumped from around #300 a decade ago to the top #20 now, probably why it gives me similar vibes to Ezra! I wasn’t only suggesting names which are less overused than Ezra, I was suggesting names which I think someone who likes Ezra may also like.
