Wanda or Rebecca?

What do you think of these names? Are they awfully old-fashioned? I am not from the UK and often struggle all cultural or social connotations surrounding names.
Am I right that people would probably use Becky instead or Rebecca?

I am a Rebecca who has never been Becky, but not for lack of people trying! It's taken a lot of blunt "that's not my name" over the years but people have gotten the hang of it now. I go by Reba.

Rebecca is a classic and has a certain beauty to it. It's a bit safe but Wanda is too out there.
I know a few Veronica's who go as Ron /Ronnie. It's kind of cool.

Rosas67 · 02/10/2024 18:03

No to wanda. Have you not seen the tv show fairly odd parents???

wafflesmgee · 02/10/2024 18:05

Wanda I associate with the verbs "to wander/wonder" so she may get lots of "I Wanda... what I'm having for breakfast? Etc. Comments, a wand is also slang for a penis which would put me off

Rebecca is lovely, possibly a bit boring but safe choice

I know a Veronica who is 30 and loves it, I think it's a good name as it works in different languages, her nicknames have been vern and veronique.

Rebecca - 100 per cent.

These are top 100 baby names in UK if you like any of them and they'd work in Poland too.

Rebecca is a nice safe, timeless, 'neutral' name. It's served me well for 50 years.

Whilst there are plenty of shortenings, you don't have to use them. People sometimes try and call me Becky, but I tell them I don't use that and it's Rebecca.

I do answer to Becs though - but only a few people use it.

ginasevern · 02/10/2024 18:09

Rebecca is timeless, classical and biblical. It is a beautiful name. I've known it shortened to Reb which is better than Becky. Wanda is atrocious. I've only ever heard of it from the John Cleese film "A fish called Wanda". Please don't call a child this.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 02/10/2024 18:16

Rebecca

WillowTit · 02/10/2024 18:18

Becca?
not wanda
what about Wendy

AllAboutNiamh · 02/10/2024 18:19

Wanda? That’s bloody awful.

Rebecca is a lovely name but has just dreadful shortenings like Becky or Bex. That would be my worry if I named a child Rebecca.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/10/2024 18:20

Rebecca.

Thank you! I was expecting Wanda not to be liked. My friends from Poland hate it as well. I really like Rebecca but hate Bec/Becky?

What about Veronica? Is it also considered very old fashioned in the UK?

I personally love Veronica. I lived in Spain and knew several and thought it was lovely. Rebecca is nice too (although no diminutives).
Not Wanda

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 02/10/2024 18:21

"Or Rebbie"

Rebbie? 🤣

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 02/10/2024 18:21

"Or Rebbie"

Rebbie? 🤣

Why not just go for Rabies?

Catterbat · 02/10/2024 18:22

Rebecca if you’re having a human baby, Wanda if you’re having a fish.

AutumnalCosiness · 02/10/2024 18:26

Rebecca!

NewGreenDuck · 02/10/2024 18:28

Rebekah, because that is the way we spell it in our family!

I have a Rebecca and don't know another which is nice really given I think it's a pretty ordinary name!

RandomUsernameHere · 02/10/2024 18:42

Rebecca is lovely, it was extremely popular when I was a child (I'm 38), but I don't know any children called Rebecca. Wanda just makes me think of the film "A Fish Called Wanda", I've never met anyone with that name. Veronica is nice but yes I'd say it's old fashioned and quite an adventurous choice.

Grazyna80 · 02/10/2024 18:44

My nasty aunt is called Wanda . So Rebecca it is.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 02/10/2024 18:45

Rebecca. Wanda is awful 😬

And yeah, people will call Rebecca 'Becky.'

PosiePetal · 02/10/2024 18:46

Rebecca is lovely.

Francesca?

WillowTit · 02/10/2024 18:47

yes veronica is ok
i know a wanda so that puts me off,
other than that, i am sure its ok
