Wanda or Rebecca?

What do you think of these names? Are they awfully old-fashioned? I am not from the UK and often struggle all cultural or social connotations surrounding names.
Am I right that people would probably use Becky instead or Rebecca?

Wanda is awful.
I like Rebecca but not keen on Becky. Rebecca will get shortened to something else.
I like Veronica too.
What about Gisele or Gisela

sel2223 · 02/10/2024 18:57

That has to be one of the more obscure 'top two' names I've seen on here as they are so different!

It's not often I see or hear a name and really dislike it but Wanda is one of those times. It's awful, sorry OP

Rebecca I think is quite a classic that never really goes out of fashion. You are just as likely to see an older lady with the name as you are a child and every age in between as well (it was particularly popular in the 80's)

Oh, I googled and there is a film called "A fish called Wanda". I have no idea what it's about.

🤣🤣🤣

You are in for a treat if you decide to watch it

Bournetilly · 02/10/2024 19:02

Neither of them.

MyNamesGaryAndImAddictedToChips · 02/10/2024 19:03

Am I the only one who thought first of WandaVision?

I agree with PP, it seems like an old fashioned American name to me.

Yalta · 02/10/2024 19:04

I actually forgot the Fish Called Wanda Film

Instead I thought if Wanda Vision

That’s a great film but Wanda is a terrible name (sorry)

Nicebloomers · 02/10/2024 19:14

Rebecca is classic but agree, not keen on the shortenings.

Wanda is not attractive to my ears. Sorry if you love it. It falls in with Brenda, Sheila etc which are dated here.

Veronica I love, nn Ronnie. Very sweet.

Can I suggest:

Virginia
Sylvia
Margot
Claire
Sybil
Rita
Helen
Selena
Valerie

polkadotpixie · 02/10/2024 19:18

I like Veronica, the one I know shortens it to Ronnie

Rebecca is nice but more of my era (I'm 40), Wanda is awful, sorry

I actually love Wanda!

Smartiepants79 · 02/10/2024 19:21

Rebecca is lovely, timeless. She may choose a shorter version as she grows but that can be up to her and you.
I’ve never met a Wanda in real life, of any age,
Wanda is a cartoon witch. I wouldn’t choose it.

BinkyBeaufort · 02/10/2024 19:23

Rebecca is lovely, as is Veronica.
The only Wanda I've heard of is Benedict Cumberbatch's mum.

The majority of those names I would never inflict on a little girl 😬

Sybil?! Valerie?! Rita?! Noooooooooooooo!

I thought of the children's series Wanda and the Alien. Wanda is a rabbit.

Rebecca rabbit is also a character in Peppa Pig. Therefore, I have deduced that you are giving birth to a rabbit.

In all seriousness, Rebecca is fine. Wanda - nah.

Yozzer87 · 02/10/2024 19:33

Wanda is the pet name of my favourite vibrator. Sorry.

ButterAsADip · 02/10/2024 19:37

I know a new baby Wendy and despite previously only associating Wendy with middle aged women, I really bloody love Wendy on a baby!! Wanda isn’t much difference. It’s cooler than Rebecca if you ask me.
Rebecca is a bit blah and Becky isn’t definite - I know just Rebeccas, or Beccas.

modgepodge · 02/10/2024 17:50

Ooh yes I rarely comment on names but I have to say I’ve never come across a wanda in England of any age. Sounds quite American to me? Maybe more common there. I have to say I’m not a fan! Same with Veronica, very unusual in this country.

Rebecca is fine, probably more common amongst women in their 30s/40s than little girls but perfectly acceptable name. Nicknames would be bec, bex, Becky, becca. It will almost certainly be shortened so don’t use it if that bothers you.

Edited

It's Polish in origin but old fashioned there too.

MyOwnToes · 02/10/2024 19:51

I love Veronica- all the ones I know are Spanish and v stylish and glam.

Rebecca- lovely
Wanda- fish.

mathanxiety · 02/10/2024 19:56

I'd go with Rebecca, but spell it Rebekah.
I know a Rebecca whose NN is Reba and also one who is Rivka, which is the original Hebrew form, but she's Rebecca on her BC.

Veronica is nice too. Again maybe spelled Veronika?

Vera is lovely and making a comeback if you're looking for a name that would work in Polish (not sure if you are).

KirstenBlest · 02/10/2024 20:00

I know a Wanda and I think it's cool. I know many Rebeccas and many are Becky, Becca or Bex

Button28384738 · 02/10/2024 20:10

Rebecca is lovely- I wanted it for my DD but our surname starts with an R so it didn't work

I really don't like Wanda - the only Wanda I've met is a woman in her 60s

Button28384738 · 02/10/2024 20:11

Ps I prefer Becca as a nickname for Rebecca, rather than Becky

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/10/2024 20:14

Rebecca is great but she will definitely end up being Becky/Becca (best) or Bex

Wanda….noooo. Showing my age but to me Wanda is a fish! 🐠

RuthW · 02/10/2024 20:23

Wanda is lovely. Rebecca is a bit dated. Would probably be Bex or Becca.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 02/10/2024 20:23

Rebecca is a lovely name - I know two who have never had their names shortened. It's personal preference. People try to chop my name in half and I politely correct them. If I meet a David, I wouldn't assume that I can call him "Dave".
