18 weeks with a baby girl.
I adore the name Olive but our surname is Brown.
Olive Brown.
It’s a bit too Dulux colour chart isn’t it :(

Any other suggestions welcome! (Or change my mind and convince me Olive Brown isn’t ridiculous 😅)

Any child born now wouldn’t have even a Grandparent who remembers On the buses ..and if they do ,will the child care ? There are so many more names that are beautiful that can be associated with far worse memories!! I personally love the name Olive ,it is a beautiful name associated with nature.X

Hang on, I’m 50 and remember on the busses!

TeainanIV · 27/09/2024 21:43

My daughter is an Olive so I'm a bit biased, nothing wrong with Olive Brown!

Of course they will! Most people I know don't become grandparents until at least late fifties/sixties and people of that age will remember On the Buses (not that that should affect the name choice).

Well I'm 65 and Olive Oyl and Olive from On the Buses is what I thought of. And I didn't watch On the Buses because it was rubbish. It's an awful name. Even if you don't know about those fictional characters why name your daughter after a foodstuff?

My sister's a fan and she's not 50 yet. I remember videotaping the three films when we first got a VCR in the mid-80s.

DH and I have got the complete On the Buses DVD boxset now, with bonus extras of the first episode of spin-off 'Don't Drink the Water' (crap) and Reg Varney film 'The Best Legs in the Business' (quite good).

Yes, but no one is going to be having a baby at 63, are they? The ‘younger parents’ comment makes it sound like only parents in their 20s will not have heard of On the Buses, but actually it’s pretty unlikely anyone having a baby now will have heard of it,
or be familiar with the character.

I said ‘younger’ not young. Younger as in people younger than my age won’t know On the Buses but for people my age that name is heavily associated with that particular Olive character. Olive would have been a very unusual choice of name for someone born in the 80s for instance as we’d all be thinking of that Olive. It’s obviously too far back in time to have the same association now and as I said, it appears to have become quite trendy now.

I honestly didn’t think my throwaway comment would cause so much confusion.

Ihavethebestdogs · 27/09/2024 21:47

I like Olive because it is an anagram of I love, but in this case I think Olivia or even Livia would be better 🙂

Loub1987 · 27/09/2024 21:47

I like it! Olive brown isn’t a colour and brown olives aren’t a thing (or are they?!). If you like the name use it.

I think it sounds quite old school glamorous.

BatsInSpring · 27/09/2024 21:47

I like it but names with a similar vibe for me would be;
Piper Brown
Iris Brown
Peggy Brown
Margot Brown
Nancy Brown
Lila Brown
Polly Brown
Lola Brown
Phoebe Brown

A pp said that with 'Brown' you maybe want something a little stronger for a first name and I do quite agree;

Felicity Brown
Emilia Brown
Zara Brown
Francesca Brown
Juniper Brown
Jemima Brown
Charlotta Brown
Eliza Brown

Smineusername · 27/09/2024 21:48

You can get brown olives

Drivingoverlemons · 27/09/2024 21:48

I like Olive but Olive Brown is a bit 1930s elderly lady on a bike to me. However you can easily get round this by calling her Olivia nn Olive. Which would just be pretty and quirky.

mommatoone · 27/09/2024 21:48

I think it sounds lovely. By God, there are far worse! My cousin (long time ago) had a kid in her class called Tuesday Knight.

BunnyLake · 27/09/2024 21:49

MovingonupScotland · 27/09/2024 21:28

Enid
Eliza
Edith
Esther
Esme
Emmie
Clemmie
Martha

One syllable surname calls for 2* syllable first name IMO!

Enid? That’s horrible. Sorry but no one wants to be called that. Olive is much better in comparison.

As I said in an earlier post I actually used to know an Olive Brown. Never thought of paint or that the two names didn’t go together.

Drivingoverlemons · 27/09/2024 21:51

Martha Brown is my favourite of the other suggestions. She could be Martha Olive Brown.

Ihavethebestdogs · 27/09/2024 21:51

Violet is an anagram of Olive plus a t... However, if you think Olive Brown sounds Dulux paint chart, you'll probably think Violet Brown does too! f you like names with v in them, how about Genevieve with Evie as a nickname? Genevieve is my favourite girls' name... If I'd had a child - a daughter - I'd likely have named her Genevieve Grace. As it happens I have dogs (none with the name Genevieve or Grace), so my suggestion would be Genevieve Grace Brown, or Evie Grace Brown!

Same! And my daughter (in her 20s) will because I showed her

My sons remember MASH from a time when we didn't have Internet for a month after we moved house so we watched DVDs 😂

dannyufcfan · 27/09/2024 21:54

Could be worse. At least, your surname is not oil.

PadstowGirl · 27/09/2024 21:54

Charlie

TrampolineFox · 27/09/2024 21:54

It's making me sing that song golden brown but with olive in it. That's my ADHD coming through.

I like Olive a lot!

Courgettey · 27/09/2024 21:55

What about Orla Brown?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 27/09/2024 21:55

Loub1987 · 27/09/2024 21:47

It's one of the least glamourous names I can think of. It's like Beryl, Vera, Bertha.

BunnyLake · 27/09/2024 21:55

Or how about an alliteration?

Bryony Brown
Brittany Brown
Bella Brown
Beau Brown

YeahWellWhyNot · 27/09/2024 21:55

Wouldn't bother me. Olive is a lovely name. My children are double barrelled with 2 complicated surnames, so although their first names are v.common, their surnames are frequently commented on..but it's like water off a ducks back now. It's not a problem for us. People will find fault with just about anything nowadays, if you like it, go for it.

And congrats!

Shessweetbutapsycho · 27/09/2024 21:56

Olive is a great name! Go for it- I think you’re overthinking the link with your surname

FWIW I’ve never understood the point of choosing another name (ie Olivia) when the child will only ever be known by a different name (Olive)… just go with the name you love

I had a baby last year at 40 and have heard of 'on the buses'. I think I might even have seen it. At least clips

LittleTalkingMan · 27/09/2024 21:57

How about pronouncing it as O-lave (as in Olave Baden Powell)
