Eira or Iris?

Hello,

We need a girls name that works in both Scandinavian and English languages. We love:

Eira
Iris
Elsa/Elsie

These names sound quite similar, but which one is nicer?

I like Vera pronounced in a Swedish accent. I know this because I just watched End of Summer and it is the main character's name.

I wouldn't have a clue which nation Eira came from, or how to pronounce it. Once people are told a pronunciation they can generally manage the one you like though.

I love Elsa, but that stems back to watching Casablanca, not Frozen.

Thank you so much, and between Eira and Vera, which one would you choose?

Eira! I do like Vera, I just like Veda (vay-da) more.

Thank you 😊 I know it's both a Scandi and a Welsh name...wouldn't bother me that much as we live on the Welsh borders and have Scandinavian family.

Between Eira and Vera, which one would you choose? 🤔

Definitely Eira, Vera reminds me of someone from the soap Coronation Street.

MelodyMalone · 18/09/2024 23:14

Vera Duckworth hasn't been on Corrie for years. Younger people won't have that association.

Eira definitely 😊 Beautiful name! I know two pronounced eye-ra.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/09/2024 13:40

Are Elsa and Vera pronounced the same way in both Swedish and English OP? If so, I’m learning more towards classic Elsa, since Eira and Iris seem to be pronounced differently. Vera is still considered quite old fashioned by most people in the UK (unlike in the rest of Europe) - but you might be ahead of the crowd in terms of a comeback if you did use it (similar to Sylvia).

I have a family member called Eira, it's a lovely name and I've never met another one.

For those asking, we're English and we pronounce it 'Eye-Rah', but I can see there are other pronunciations depending on country.

It's EH-rah in Welsh. If you live near Wales, I think you should go for the local pronounciation- She will be forever be explaining to people that yes, she knows that it's pronounced one way here but she pronounces hers differently. It's a hell of a burden to give a child imo.

That's a bit extreme. The Eira I know calls herself "Eye-ra".
Welsh is her first language.
Why do people get so het up about minor pronunciation differences?

JustDeserts · 21/09/2024 12:13

@PuddingAunt , because it isn't minor. It's half the name.
It's a noun, so it compares to something like Hazel saying her name as Hazzel.

Love Eira. Also like Iris.

I have a Winter born elderly relative called Gwyneira - white snow.

JustDeserts · 21/09/2024 16:13

Better than yellow snow, I guess.

I love Gwyneira! So romantic sounding and a lovely meaning in Snow White/ “white/fair as snow”. But I’ve only ever met one - I think it’s quite a rare name and I doubt it’s used in Scandinavia. Interesting that the Gwyneira you know is elderly, the one I know is young and I wondered if it was a more recent invention. Guess not😁!

PollyPeep · 21/09/2024 21:10

I would have said Eira but judging from this thread I think you'll have annoying pronunciation mistakes! I'd have said eye-rah, but on this thread I've also seen ear-rah, ay-rah, eh-rah, ee-rah... You'll also have this to an extent with Vera - some say vay-rah, veh-rah or vee-rah. For simplicity maybe Iris is best!

DoublePeonies · 21/09/2024 21:33

Iris from your first list, but Vera a million times over any of the others.

We went with Eira! 😍❤️ Thanks everyone for your input x

Eira is gorgeous.

I dislike Iris by association (would probably love it otherwise)

I like Elsa/Elsie but Eira is more elegant and unusual.

Henriette9 · 23/09/2024 13:20

Beautiful choice OP. Congratulations.

Beautiful name! Out of interest, how do you pronounce it? My instinct is eye-rah, is that right?

pambeesleyhalpert · 23/09/2024 13:33

Eira 100%
