Thoughts on Ella? How many do you know?

I really like it and DH hasn’t said no , so technically the only name we’ve agreed on so far.
Is it a popular baby name where you are ? I know quite a few Bella’s at the moment but no Ella’s.

I agree with others, it’s fine just quite bland and a bit nothingy to me. I don’t know hundreds myself but it’s a name I hear around a lot.

ALunchbox · 10/09/2024 14:32

There are three in my DC's school.

Pretty, easy to spell and say and very international- I can see why it’s so popular.

The only problem is that it possibly seems a bit insubstantial - as it’s also used as a nn for all the other -ella ending names as well as Eleanor, Eliana etc Only you can decide whether this bothers you - lots of people prefer diminutives as given names now. But I personally prefer Eleanor or Gabriella etc on the BC.

I know a couple, both early teens. I'm not a fan, agree with some PPs it sounds kind of "nothingy". Like a suffix. Or a pronoun. Indeed, it's also the Spanish word for "she".

Berlinlover · 10/09/2024 14:41

It makes me think of salmonella.

Fontainebleau007 · 10/09/2024 14:42

Lovely name I only know of 1

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 10/09/2024 14:42

One in their 20s, two in their teens, one in single digits. I work in education and find that names, although supposedly chosen at random by parents, somehow aren't and that multiples of the same names / variations of, end up in the same year groups.

RaspberryBeretxx · 10/09/2024 14:44

I think it's lovely. I know one in her 30s and one who is early teens.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 10/09/2024 14:47

I know seven! Late 80’s, early 20’s, three in late teens, one tween, a preschooler and a baby.

I know seven! Late 80’s, early 20’s, three in late teens, one tween, a preschooler and a baby.

And I can’t count… that’s eight!

Parky04 · 10/09/2024 14:48

My DN22 is called Ella. The only one I know of though.

HanKeeBee · 10/09/2024 14:50

I know an Ella (aged 12) and an Elodie (aged 8)

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/09/2024 14:54

I live in Denmark where it's the 3rd most popular name. I've never met one I didn't like.

SemperIdem · 10/09/2024 14:55

It’s a bit bland.

FayCarew · 10/09/2024 14:56

I have, @StrictlyAFemaleFemale . She's an Ella short for Arabella.

jackstini · 10/09/2024 15:01

I know one who is 18, one 19, one in her 30s and one who died a couple of years ago at the ripe old age of 99!

Lovely name

SickOfTheRoad · 10/09/2024 15:03

I know 4 but they're all between 13 and 22.

Theoldwoman · 10/09/2024 15:38

My Ella is 21, her bestie is also Ella and she’s 22. There was another at secondary school. None at high school. DH cousins daughter is Ella (18)

Seriously, that’s all we know.

theduchessofspork · 10/09/2024 15:42

Many many - a least a couple of dozen from 0 to 37

If you really love it I'd give her a full name - Eloise, Eleanor, Annabel, etc, so she has some choices

Username9876543211 · 10/09/2024 16:51

I have an Ella (almost 3) and have not yet come across any other Ella’s at playgroups or nursery. I do know 4 older Ellas (all in their 30s) and also my Great Aunt was an Ella (she would be almost 100 now). Personally I think it’s a great name and you should go for it if you both really like it! Good luck

Blingismything · 10/09/2024 17:26

I love it and know of a few, the oldest is 24 and the youngest 4.

Moonshine5 · 10/09/2024 17:28

Many many

Hopebridge · 10/09/2024 17:29

I know 3. It's a nice name.

MsLaiyla · 10/09/2024 17:32

I know one. She's named after her great grandmother. The name, for our family, is associated with strength and character. Ella is more than living up to her name, but in her very own way, just as her namesake did.

RedOnyx · 10/09/2024 18:10

Where I live one aged 2.

In the UK one Ella aged about 15, an Elena (9ish) and a Gabriella (10). Plus an Eleanor in her 70s, but she goes by Lenny. Also a 1 year old Bella.
