I really like it and DH hasn’t said no , so technically the only name we’ve agreed on so far.
Is it a popular baby name where you are ? I know quite a few Bella’s at the moment but no Ella’s.

Stella is more 'trendy' right now

I have known a number of Ellas (and Ellies) in their 30s, and then others in tweens/teens.

So probably not going to be overrepresented in your daughter's peer group

MerryMarys · 11/09/2024 07:29

Ella, Ellie, Eva etc are overused and likely to feel dated soon as they inevitably fall out of fashion

FayCarew · 11/09/2024 09:16

Stella feels a lot stronger than Ella. Tends to get shortened to Stel.
The meaning is pretty.
Estella seems slightly softer.

Jiminycrickets · 11/09/2024 09:18

I know lots, it’s pretty! We would have used it, but surname starts with E and ends with A, so sounded odd.

Lwrenn · 11/09/2024 09:23

I have an Eleanor who gets almost every variation of the name possible.
Shes nelly this morning, but may be elle or Ella tonight.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 11/09/2024 13:36

Several, and it also blurs into all the other "El" names. I think it's a bit dull. But not awful, embarassing, or weird.

Pinkyhere · 14/09/2024 21:04

I have a teenage Ella. We got lots of compliments when she was named and still gets them now.
I know of a handful but not loads.
I loved it bc it's simple but elegant -to my mind anyway.
Also useful for us that works in several languages bc we don't live in the UK

newyear2024 · 14/09/2024 21:07

It's like the cockapoo of names where I live. Extremely common. But I like cockapoos and I like the name Ella.

CharlotteLightandDark · 14/09/2024 21:12

I know a lovely 42 year Ella, it’s a good name

sunshineandshowers40 · 14/09/2024 22:07

I really like it! Know of a few but they are all different ages.

Mandarinaduck · 14/09/2024 23:21

I know a 50 year old Ella; no young ones.
i know a 14 year old Stella.

They are both nice; Ella is very timeless, ageless, classic, international. I think Stella is quite popular at the moment.

MrsB2019x · 19/09/2024 13:26

I have an Ella so biased but I adore her name. There aren’t any others at her nursery as far as I am aware

Thanks everyone, very helpful advice ! I do agree with most of the negative comments about it I guess that’s what is putting me off it, but I really do love it at the same time.
DH has suggested Stella instead which while similar seems too out there for me, I’ve never come across a Stella (maybe why it seems quite unusual to me). Anyone have any thoughts on it please?

I have a Stella and almost everyone compliments the name/ gushed over it when she was born. And I know they're genuine because DD2s name just gets 'oh' or 'ah' 😅 I know I'm biased but I think it's strong but pretty, I love it. We don't know any other Stellas.

But anyway it doesn't matter what other people think, go with a name you love :)

I know 3- completely different ages actual different generations and they don't know each other none of them are under 5.

Pick a name you love- I named our daughter a name not in the top 50 and I didn't know any and now it's one of the most popular names of her age group.

You can try hard but sometimes it doesn't work and there was one name in particular I avoided as it was in the top 5 baby names and popular for different ages and have met none at baby groups

Scorpion84 · 22/09/2024 15:32

I have an Ella aged 2 , middle name Iris

I really don't feel it's that popular anymore like it was in the early 2000's. No others in nursery so far .

To me it's simple and elegant and suits all ages .I like simple names though.

To be honest I actually loved Anna more and it has the same vibes, but my husband felt it would be confused with Hannah and she would be forever correcting it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Mrsredlipstick · 22/09/2024 15:38

My granny was Leonora. We have used a version of that for our daughter.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 22/09/2024 15:39

Seems very popular. My dog is called Ella too.

HowManyDaysUntillXmas · 22/09/2024 16:02

Great name!

HowManyDaysUntillXmas · 22/09/2024 16:03

Suits all ages.,
Ella Fitzgerald too 💛

MerryMarys · 22/09/2024 16:23

I find it dull from overuse. I know so many Ellas that have need their surnames to k ow which one is referred to.

There are more memorable names imo

Mrsredlipstick · 22/09/2024 17:36

Just a thought do you want cute or titled? My mother Lady Lipstick wanted us to have names that matched a title. Yes I'm on the wanky thread x
