I'm compiling a name list for my first child, and if it's a boy then we'll name him Laith (Arabic for lion). Me and my husband are both British Pakistani. The thing is, I'm not sure if it would stand out or look odd on a boy of our background since one of my friends said that she thought we'd go for an Arabic or Muslim name. I then realised that maybe it doesn't sound like it's Arabic to a lot of people.

Does anyone know a Laith who's from the same or a similar background? Just looking for reassurance since hubby isn't too sure, but I like the name 😅

I don't, but I like it. Great name

ThePoshUns · 10/09/2024 02:59

I don't know anyone with that name, but it's really nice and means something to you .

LoveItaly · 10/09/2024 03:02

I know of someone with that name, I think one of their parents is Syrian.

Topseyt123 · 10/09/2024 03:05

I do quite like it. It could grow on me more too.

Andoutcomethewolves · 10/09/2024 03:17

I really like it but wouldn't have known it was Arabic (for some reason I'd have guessed at Scottish 😕). Does it really matter though? It's a great name and will just become your DS's name to everyone he meets!

Jealous I didn’t think of this name!

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 10/09/2024 03:49

I’m a teacher never heard the name but thinks it’s genuinely gorgeous name and even better when you hear what it means

NancyJoan · 10/09/2024 03:54

My daughter has a friend called Laith, he is lovely! He is Muslim, or at least his mum is . she’s a single mum and I’ve never met his dad.

RedOnyx · 10/09/2024 06:02

I've never heard it but it's lovely. There are a few Arabic names at my daughter's nursery but most are girls. (Isra, Tasnim...)

anxietyaardvark · 10/09/2024 06:08

There are two Laiths in my daughter's class.

lifesrichpageant · 10/09/2024 06:10

Yes! A lovely boy called Laith has grown up with my DS. I believe the parents are Tunisian. Great name!

Moonshine5 · 10/09/2024 06:11

Yes he is 14

Yes we know a Laith. Lovely name. Not sure you have anything to worry about here. I’m sure a little Laith who’s proud of his roots would tell people his name is Arabic for Lion!

AnOldCynic · 10/09/2024 06:25

I know a Laith, spelt Layth. I think it's a nice name, (and he's a nice bloke too 😊) but at the time I didn't know its heritage.

Lwrenn · 10/09/2024 06:26

@lljkk that's such a dickhead thing to say.

I love the name OP! Never heard it but its great x

Fraaahnces · 10/09/2024 06:27

It’s fabulous!

CellophaneFlower · 10/09/2024 06:31

I know a Laith. His mum is Egyptian. His brother's name is Scottish though!

I really don't think it looks odd either way, just choose a name you love.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/09/2024 06:34

It’s a fabulous name. I love it. Surely anyone who knows Arabic will know it’s Arabic?

susiedaisy1912 · 10/09/2024 06:34

Love it

Flubadubba · 10/09/2024 06:35

Looking at the names in DD's reception class, ot really wouldn't stand out as overly unusual at all. Go for it if you like it!

SpidersAreShitheads · 10/09/2024 06:38

Lovely idea, my only questions are a) will you be mixing with lots of Arabic speakers and if so, b) what will they make of a child called Laith? Is that more common culturally or would it make your child the subject of ridicule?

if there was a little boy at school called Lion, the name would probably cause a fair bit of merriment hence why I was asking about the Arabic community. To English speakers Laith is a lovely name - I just don’t know how it would be received by those who speak Arabic?

Sunbird24 · 10/09/2024 06:41

I only know asad as Arabic for lion so I wouldn’t make that connection, but I think Laith sounds nice as a name

onwardandupwards · 10/09/2024 06:44

There's a child in my dd class with that name it's a lovely name x

Nightowl1234 · 10/09/2024 06:44

It’s lovely but I wouldn’t have known it was Arabic. It sounds Scottish to me! But does it really matter to you that non-Arabic people wouldn’t know it’s an Arabic name? I don’t think it really matters as it’s a nice name either way.
