Delilah. But I have a dislike for all bella/belle names!

Marmiteontoastgirlie · 09/09/2024 09:11

I really like Dahlia, it’s on our shortlist for bebe due in a few months. Isabelle is obviously beautiful but I think tonnes about. I like Dahlia because it’s feminine but not as frilly as Isabelle and more unique/rare.

shoopshoopdedoo · 09/09/2024 09:47

I don’t love Dahlia, but prefer it to Isabelle, which I find way too frilly. I like Isobel/Isabel.

Nicebloomers · 09/09/2024 10:15

Isabelle is very overdone.

sel2223 · 09/09/2024 15:39

Sorry, all I think of when I see Dahlia is the Black Dahlia murder

girljulian · 09/09/2024 15:41

I like Dahlia but I think a lot of people will mispronounce it.

NyeRobey · 09/09/2024 15:43

Darley-a
Or Daily-a?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/09/2024 15:45

I like both well enough, but there are a LOT of Isabelles around. Dahlia is more unusual.

DuchessOfSausage · 09/09/2024 16:18

Dahl-ya or Dale-ya?
Isabelle will get Isabel and there are lots of Isabellas. She'll probably be Izzy.
The names are quite different, so it's not a straightforward choice.

VenusClapTrap · 09/09/2024 18:42

I know a Dalia, pronounced Dar - Lea. I think that’s lovely.

hockityponktas · 09/09/2024 18:47

Dahlia definitely.
I don’t love it but the sheer amount of Isabelle’s/isobel/isabel etc I’ve met in the last few years through working with children is unbelievable!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 09/09/2024 18:51

Isabella

jf1992x · 09/09/2024 18:52

Nahhh Black Dahlia! Need I say more!

RustyBear · 09/09/2024 19:08

DD thought about calling DGD Dahlia, but decided against it, partly because of Black Dahlia and partly because of the probability of it being mispronounced. In the end they called her Talia, pronounced Tarlia, which I suppose could also have a different pronunciation, but for some reason doesn’t seem to.

which name do you prefer?

Isabelle. But I would spell it Isabel.

That’s how that name is said. Dahlia is correctly pronounced “Daylia” but it looks like “Dah-lia” and sometimes people say it that way.

Pearlsandpins · 09/09/2024 20:55

Isabelle definitely (but we have one so I might be biased!)

DuchessOfSausage · 09/09/2024 20:58

The flower was named after someone called Dahl, but it pronounced Daylia,
Fuchsia is Fewsha not Fuchs-ia.

Waterboatlass · 09/09/2024 21:02

Isobel as preferred spelling (simple and elegant) really not keen on Dahlia. Not sure why, I love the flowers.

NyeRobey · 09/09/2024 21:06

The dahlia flower I have always known pronounced "day- lea"
The Dahlia person I know is pronounced "Darl-eya"
I dislike "Darl-eya" as a sound personally.

lollyPaloozah · 09/09/2024 21:23

Love Dahlia but only the American pronunciation (Dar-lea) and not the traditional English one (Day-lea)

I don’t think I would pick it just for that reason but Isabelle is so overused in my opinion and there are lots of nicer names out there!

inthekiddle · 09/09/2024 22:35

Anything but another Isabelle!!!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/09/2024 22:57

I really like both (although I prefer the simpler Isabel spelling) - but realistically both names have their issues - Dahlia with pronunciation and Isabelle with spelling . Neither are the end of the world but it could be a pain for her.

Are there any other names you’re considering OP? Or maybe compromise with Isabella? No spelling or pronunciation issues and is a mix of both names.

RubyBirdy · 09/09/2024 23:04

I love Isabelle. Prefer the nn Belle to Izzy.
Agree with the American v English pronunciation issues of Dahlia. I love the English Day-lia, as this makes me think of the flower, but the American Dar-lia reminds me of the murder, unfortunately. If you could enforce the English pronunciation, then I love the name!

TheBers2024 · 09/09/2024 23:06

D names are better than I names.
