Baby boy who will have three nationalities (Finnish, English, French). What do you think of Otso, will it work in the UK? It means bear in Finnish.

Other names on the list currently Hugo, Oscar and August.

I think it is lovely (but be prepared for a lifetime of explaining it's not a misspelling and he name isn't Otto)

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 27/08/2024 15:08

I think Otso's pretty easy to pronounce and not likely to get mixed up with a different word (I speak French as well as English and can't think of anything off the top of my head) and there was a film recently with someone called Otso.

NannyR · 27/08/2024 15:08

It's not a name I have ever heard before, my first thought was that it was a typo for Otto, it also made me think of Lotso the bear from Toy Story. I think your other choices might work better in the UK.

Yeah this is my thinking too. Might just make it easier for him that we pick a name that is a known name in all his three countries.

I think it's going to be hard work in the UK as it's not a known name here and sounds a lot like Otto. I'd go with Oscar, Hugo is very posh and August is quite 'out there' IMO.

Lifeinlists · 27/08/2024 15:11

It'll be mistaken for Otto repeatedly. I like Otto!
Hugo and Oscar from your list. August is a bit twee imo.

Raveonette · 27/08/2024 15:11

It sounds too much like Oxo to me, sorry. Any of your others are nice.

Hmm Hugo is my husbands favourite (he is French) and it's not really posh in France or in the Nordic countries. It seems to be quite popular in the UK, is it still perceived that posh nowadays?

It's not "posh" these days imo, I've taught just as many Hugos at council estate comps as I have at public boarding schools. It's as popular as say, Oscar or Theodore these days. Nice name.

Not keen on Otso, sorry. Think it could lead to teasing here in the UK.

I love your other choices.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/08/2024 15:16

Hugo is a lovely name. I don't think of it as 'posh', particularly - just classic.

Lifeinlists · 27/08/2024 15:20

Hugo is not 'posh' whatever that means. It's pretty mainstream middle class and not that unusual, nor is it having a moment, unlike August.

Leeloo1233 · 27/08/2024 15:22

Thank you all, this gave me so much clarity!

I’m not really sure about Otso.
Oscar is my favourite, it’s lovely.

MiddleAgedDread · 27/08/2024 15:23

It sounds like a stock cube! Any of your other options are so much better. Or just called him Bear!

VenusClapTrap · 27/08/2024 15:30

Oh I love Otso. It’s great! Hugo is nice too.

pinkdelight · 27/08/2024 15:36

Orson is a more viable bear-related name here, but from your list Oscar is my fave. Not keen on August.

LlynTegid · 27/08/2024 15:37

I think your decision to rule out Otso is a sensible one.

Hector?

It's an unusual name, but easy to spell, and presumably, is written like it sounds.

I would however get ready for a lot of mis-hearings of "Otto?"

It also makes me think of Lotso, the evil bear from Toy Story.

Muthaofcats · 27/08/2024 17:00

Otso sounds like fatso
