Baby girl came early- names!?

newmum1508 · 26/08/2024 18:12

My girl came 6 weeks early just 4 days ago and is currently in NICU at the moment. She had some breathing problems but is getting a lot stronger.
We hadn’t decide on a name!
I’m native American by heritage and was adopted to the UK as a child, so I wanted something to reflect that part of our heritage. My biological family I know had ties with the symbol of a wolf in their Seneca tribe, so we’ve decided on Tala as her middle name (wolf in Native American).

We thought we had another month and a bit to decide on first names but not any more!

I love Elowen (my husband is Cornish so it also fits that way).
I also like-
Willow
Etta
Sorrel (but I’m not sure if it’s too uncommon)

Our surname is Smith and her middle name is short too, so now I’m leaning towards 3 or more syllable first names, but I’m just not totally set on any!

Ive taken a lot of names off my list as I don’t think they fit with “ Tala Smith”. The only one that flows to me at the moment is Elowen.

Any suggestions I’d love 💕! I’m very into name meanings and quite like vintage names

Congratulations, and healing vibes to your girl 💖

I really like Elowen.

Elowen Tala Smith. Gorgeous!

Orangesandlemonsq · 26/08/2024 18:16

Elowen is lovely! (Could be shortened to Elle, Nell or Wen if you wanted to).

Enko · 26/08/2024 18:18

Elowen and Sorrel are.both gorgeous.

I like Etta a lot but I think its too many short names with the other 2.

Willow for me is soso. I don't hate it nor love it.

Firsttimebabymummy · 26/08/2024 18:23

I really like Elowen Tala Smith too! Gorgeous name. Congratulations:)

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 26/08/2024 18:26

Elowen is lovely! As is Willow.
Etta Tala is a bit of a mouthful. Sorrel sounds too similar to "sorry" for me

Snoopfroggyfrogg · 26/08/2024 18:28

Congratulations!! Glad little one is getting stronger day by day.

Elowen is absolutely beautiful.

Tala is nice but it's Sioux. Do you have Sioux heritage? I wouldn't just pick a word from another tribe if your ancestry is Seneca, sorry. I love the idea of honouring your Native American background but would go for the actual group/ language itself.

Ikeameatballs · 26/08/2024 18:30

Elowen is beautiful.

NoSnowdrop · 26/08/2024 18:31

Congratulations- Elowen is lovely!

@Snoopfroggyfrogg yes agree, it’s hard to find both a name people can pronounce, nice meaning and language origin from your specific tribe. The Seneca tribe does include a wolf clan, which it seems my biological family were very connected to. I have a knitted wolf quilt from my biological grandmother and it’s a special meaning to me. My heritage is primarily Seneca in immediate lineage but I have a maternal grandfather who was Sioux, and maternal grandma was Mohawk- so all of that combined, we think it fits!

Sounds perfect then with the Sioux connection! Lovely choice

Snoopfroggyfrogg · 26/08/2024 18:38

Elowen Tala Smith has a lovely sense of place and heritage but also individuality. Sorrel lovely too, I don't think Willow or Etta as interesting , although nothing wrong with them

Andoutcomethewolves · 26/08/2024 18:41

Elowen is gorgeous.

I like Sorrel too.

Not a fan of Willow or Etta either independently or with Tala.

Go for Elowen!

Footnoteintime · 26/08/2024 18:44

Congratulations OP. It sounds like your DD is doing really well and just needing a bit more time to get up her strength and get ready for home.
i love Elowen Tala too. Beautiful and reflects her heritage without being difficult to spell or pronounce. If you and DP feel it suits her I think it’s really lovely .

Footnoteintime · 26/08/2024 18:45

Forget to say I think Sorrel with Smith is a bit S heavy . It’s a lovely name too though

Raininginparadise2 · 26/08/2024 19:04

Elowen Tala Smith 🥰 congratulations OP x

Rory17384949 · 26/08/2024 19:15

Congratulations!

I think Elowen works really well, better than the other names on your list.

Awrite · 26/08/2024 19:18

Another vote for Elowen.

Please use it, it seems so much more suited to her heritage than the other names on your list.

PerkyMintDeer · 26/08/2024 19:18

Elowen Tala is the best - congratulations!

My friend with Native American ancestry called her daughter Nara which I think is beautiful too but no idea which Tribe!

TheCountessofLocksley · 26/08/2024 19:23

I absolutely adore Sorrel and my first born would have been called that had he not been a boy.

I think Bligh is Cornish for wolf... would Blithe work as a first name?

I love Sorrel! It’s sounds beautiful to me but I got so much negative feedback when I mentioned it to friends 😭. Ty for suggestion! Not keen on the sound of Blithe though xx

Awwwww - congratulations. I'm glad to hear your daughter is doing well. How are you and your DH? I hope you're looking after yourselves and getting over the shock!

Elowen Tala Smith is lovely. I agree the first name needs a couple of syllables.

One of my favourite girls names is Willow but it doesn't go as well.

What about

Eloise Tala

Amelie Tala

Emily Tala

Annabelle Tala

Annalise Tala

Ottalie Tala

In fact it seems you need a 3 syllable name that starts with a vowel!

Firebird83 · 26/08/2024 19:31

I like Elowen but only when pronounced properly, with the emphasis on the second syllable. I’ve heard a few pronounced ELLE-o-wen recently!

redtrain123 · 26/08/2024 19:35

Congratulations and wishing your dc all the best.

Love your middle mane.

Inspired by Pokdark , how about

Demelza
Morwenna

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 26/08/2024 21:14

Love all the names you have chosen, but agree that Etta and Tala is a lot of t. Is there a reason you don't want Tala as a first name? I think it is beautiful.

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/08/2024 21:35

Elowen is absolutely perfect! Congratulations 🥰
