Xander or Xavier

We don't even know if we're having a boy or girl yet, so this could be pointless - but I have absolutely no girls name ideas so wanted to get opinions on our top two for boys.

I love boy names with an X in and DH has vetoed all of the other possibilities except Xander and Xavier.
I would actually go for Alexander but DH thinks it's pointless as we don't like Alex so it removes that as a possible nickname.

DD is Aurora (DH choice) but goes exclusively by Rory (Gilmore girls mama here)

Xerxes. Of your two names, Xavier is the better one. Xander is more popular in general but I'm put off it because of the long a/short a thing.

For a girl, I suggest Xanthe, Xenia or Xena. Xin is nice but might be a bit strange without the heritage.

Nicebloomers · 20/08/2024 13:57

Xavier. Although there was one at my son’s pre-school that was pronounced ex-avier and it drove me crazy. It apparently really annoyed the mum when it was pronounced ‘Zavier’ lol

Viviennemary · 20/08/2024 13:57

Neither one. They are both awful

SquigglePigs · 20/08/2024 14:00

I love Xander.

Xavier has potential pronunciation issues which would concern me a bit.

TheLastTimeEver · 20/08/2024 14:03

As much as I hate a Jayden or a Kai - at the very other end of the spectrum these are dire.

Xerxes is close to child abuse. Avoid all of these unless he wants to start a photocopying business.

Aurora is pretty.

Radiatorvalves · 20/08/2024 14:05

I nearly called DS Xavier. He really likes it… we spend a lot of time in France and it would be easier to say/spell than his Anglo-Irish name!

Beth216 · 20/08/2024 14:06

Xavier is pronounced Ha- vee- ay isn't it? I wouldn't go for it as too many pronunciation issues.
Xander is really nice although I don't understand your love of X names and Xerxes is hideous.

BeckyWithTheGoodBear · 20/08/2024 14:14

Alexander nn Xander

Lifeinlists · 20/08/2024 14:16

Xavier if you want a life time of mispronunciation. So no.
Xander is Alexander so use that. Lovely name.
Xerxes? There's a rising star footballer with a creative spelling of that but as a surname. That could get confusing.

But what I really want to know is why are you so stuck on X pronounced Z?

ChristmasJumpers · 20/08/2024 14:18

Viviennemary · 20/08/2024 13:57

Neither one. They are both awful

These are my very favourite opinions, they're so helpful 😉

Why does it have to have an X? Would you like your name to have an X in it?

I would have no idea how to pronounce Xerxes, it's definitely not a contender!

Love Xander!

MelodyMalone · 20/08/2024 14:21

Alexander can be shortened to Alec, rather than Alex - but then that doesn't have an X in it.

Max?
Felix?

Edited

How is Xerxes pronounced?
Girls names I probably wouldn't go for one with an x in, they don't appeal to me in the same way

I'm up north and it's 100% a short a in Xander here, no question

Sorry. That was unhelpful. I agree with the poster who said Alexander. That's quite nice.

cupcaske123 · 20/08/2024 14:23

Neither OP. However if you like x, how about:

Felix
Maddox
Rex
Lennox
Hendrix

We would pronounce it Zavier (Zay-vee-yer)

I don't know why so many people are giving opinions on Xerxes, I'd never heard of it until this thread, it isn't a name we're considering!

Well no, and I wouldn't be looking for a girls name with an X in either.

I just like it for boys, I don't know why 🤷‍♀️

Aaah my DS was almost called Xavier...we would have pronounced it Zav ee ay though.
I like both names.

All have been discussed and decided against (although I do love Hendrix, DH hates it)

But will they like it? Or spend their lives going 'no, it's spelled this way'?

Naming your child isn't the time to prove how wildly creative and original you are. They have to live with the name

MelodyMalone · 20/08/2024 14:28

Dexter?

Perhaps we should keep our children nameless until they can tell us what they like?

I don't like my own name particularly but how were my parents supposed to know this? All we can do is give our children a name that we like and hope for the best surely?

Also I don't know of any other ways to spell Xavier (granted some people spend Xander with a Z)

Another name I love that DH hates 😢
