Xander or Xavier

We don't even know if we're having a boy or girl yet, so this could be pointless - but I have absolutely no girls name ideas so wanted to get opinions on our top two for boys.

I love boy names with an X in and DH has vetoed all of the other possibilities except Xander and Xavier.
I would actually go for Alexander but DH thinks it's pointless as we don't like Alex so it removes that as a possible nickname.

DD is Aurora (DH choice) but goes exclusively by Rory (Gilmore girls mama here)

I really like Xavier both the Frenxh and Spanish pronunciations.
Otherwise Axel is lovely too

Greigeisthelatestbeige · 20/08/2024 14:33

I love both. I prefer Xavier because Xander is just a nickname for Alexander and at some point I’d be worried his friends would call him Alex (which I don’t like for a boy).

DuchessOfSausage · 20/08/2024 14:38

@ChristmasJumpers , Zerk-zees. We considered Xavier but were put off by the Ex-avier (mis)pronunciation.

RunLyraRun · 20/08/2024 14:40

I have a tweenage Xander. He loves it, I love it. Shortened to Xand by close family.

Pronunciation issues are rare but not unheard of (the very odd "Ex-ander").

Birth cert is Alexander in case he didn't like it, or doesn't later in life, so he can easily switch to Al, Alec, Alex, Lex, Sandy - or use the whole name.

Xavier is lovely, and I would have considered it, but even on this short thread there have been 3 different pronunciations mentioned (Spanish, French, English).

How about Fox? I know a girl with that name and she rocks it, but obviously it's gender neutral.

mitogoshi · 20/08/2024 14:40

Xavier is lovely, not xander though, people will assume Alexander and once an adult, a formal name is useful

OlympicBlue · 20/08/2024 14:42

pinkfleece · 20/08/2024 14:28

But will they like it? Or spend their lives going 'no, it's spelled this way'?

Naming your child isn't the time to prove how wildly creative and original you are. They have to live with the name

This come up all the time on MN. I have a name that has to be spelt out and people learn the pronounciation. Really no biggie, had never bothers me one bit or pissed me off.

As an X-Files fan, I support Fox 😄 🦊

Max
Maxwell
Jax
Saxon
Huxley

sel2223 · 20/08/2024 14:48

I like both names OP.

Anything out of the top 20 and it's marmite. As long as you and hubby love the names, that's really all that matters.

I, personally, can't see any pronunciation issues for either in the UK

FlutteryButterfly · 20/08/2024 14:48

Xander,

As pp have already mentioned there will be various pronounciations eith Xavier- I teach and have had-

Ha- Vee-Ay
Jhav-ee-Ay
Zav-ee-Ay
EX-AY-VEE-ER

Greigeisthelatestbeige · 20/08/2024 14:53

FWIW I wouldn’t worry about other people’s pronunciations. My DC have Chinese, Polish, Italian classmates as well as others from numerous other countries. People learn the names and those who aren’t bothered to learn names aren’t the type of people you will want in your life.

ToriMJ · 20/08/2024 14:55

Xavier Is a bigger to pronounce.
I'd go xander.

As much as I hate a Jayden or a Kai - at the very other end of the spectrum these are dire.

Xerxes is close to child abuse. Avoid all of these unless he wants to start a photocopying business.

Aurora is pretty.

Xerxes was an horse in Surtees Handley Cross.

Op can call her second child “ Arter Xerxes”.

Maximus?

Maximus?

We can't go with any of the max names for personal reasons, I do love them all though

I'd choose Xander. Xavier is open to too many pronunciations. I know an ex-ayvier and zah-viyay, and there's also hah-veeyair in Spanish speaking countries

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 20/08/2024 15:03

Xander, short for Alexander. If you mainly call him Xander then it should stick rather than Alex.

Velvetbee · 20/08/2024 15:07

I really like them, either is good.

RubyBirdy · 20/08/2024 17:36

I know an Xavier that pronounces it ‘Za-vee-ayr’. The numerous different pronounciations would annoy me. I would go with Xander, as no one can tell you that you’re pronouncing your own child’s name wrong with that name 😂

wlv12 · 20/08/2024 17:47

Xander is lovely!

I think it goes well with Aurora/Rory too. Congratulations ❤️

Emmab321 · 20/08/2024 22:23

We have a Xander ( huge buffy fan :,) ) I think it’s becoming a more popular name in its own right as opposed to being a shortened version of Alexander. There is another xander at our boys nursery

Nicebloomers · 20/08/2024 13:57

Xavier. Although there was one at my son’s pre-school that was pronounced ex-avier and it drove me crazy. It apparently really annoyed the mum when it was pronounced ‘Zavier’ lol

I would also say Ex-avier. Like in X Men.

SprinkleOfSunak · 20/08/2024 22:38

Xavier is lovely.

RuthW · 20/08/2024 22:38

Xavier and Xander and both lovely. Hard to choose

TwigletsAndRadishes · 20/08/2024 22:40

Xavier is lovely when it's pronounced properly.

Not Zayvier d definitely not Ex-avier. It's Zav-ee-yeh.
