No. Fran is traditionally a girls name. Frank is fine,

moorin · 17/08/2024 19:38

I only know it as a girls name, but actually it could be quite cool as a boys name!

Skybluepinky · 17/08/2024 19:41

U know it’s not used as a boys name.

Strictlymad · 17/08/2024 19:41

I don’t think so no, and frank is only one syllable so not like you are shortening it

shellyleppard · 17/08/2024 19:42

How about Francis

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/08/2024 19:42

It's a girls (mostly older woman's) name

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 17/08/2024 19:43

Fran Healy ? (Travis singer )

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 17/08/2024 19:43

I have heard of it as a man’s name but would normally think of a girl but I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be used for a boy.
I know of Franny as a boys name

clarrylove · 17/08/2024 19:43

I know a male who uses it as a shortening for Francis (together with Franner) but not keen myself.

Cheepcheepcheep · 17/08/2024 19:44

I think it’s cool because Fran Healy but I wouldn’t inflict it on a boy on purpose, Fran Healy is a Francis by birth and I assume he went with it as Francis isn’t super rock & roll!

Fran Healy ? (Travis singer )

I came to say this. 👍

Shibr · 17/08/2024 19:46

I’ve heard it as a man’s name, probably more male than female (but that could be as it wasn’t a very popular girl’s name when I was born in the 80s). My friend has a very feminine sounding nickname and he’s never had a problem.

FelicityBeedle · 17/08/2024 19:55

I know a Spanish Fran and he’s a decent bloke, as a family nickname it’s fine

SkaneTos · 17/08/2024 22:09

I think Fran is both a female and a male name.
It makes me think of Fran Drescher in the tv show "The Nanny".
And in the tv series "Girls", main character Hannah had a boyfriend named Fran.

Cherrysherbet · 17/08/2024 22:10

Girls name

cariadlet · 17/08/2024 22:22

Haven't heard of either of the men mentioned. I automatically thought girl.

MissyB1 · 17/08/2024 22:24

I know a teenage Fran, he’s from a Scottish family, I believe it’s more common there.

MissyB1 · 17/08/2024 22:24

Just to add, he was definitely christened Fran not Francis.

toastofthetown · 17/08/2024 22:27

I’d assume a Fran was a girl, but as a family nickname it doesn’t really matter. Odds are it won’t stick anyway, and if he hates it he can tell you.

FluffMagnet · 17/08/2024 22:28

I have a male friend who is Fran (from Francis) and it never struck me as weird. Two female Frances that I know are Frankie and Franny. How about Francis using Frank or Fran interchangeably as nicknames?

In any case, nicknames, especially from parents, tend to remain inside the familial unit, so if you like it, who cares what anyone else thinks?

Needmorelego · 17/08/2024 22:28

More traditionally a girls name as a shortening of Frances or Francesca but in more recent years has become more popular for boys as a shortening of Francis - as Frank/Frankie seems less popular.
I may be wrong but I think Irish boys called Francis have frequently been called Franny rather than Frankie in the past.
I think it's fine.

longdistanceclaraclara · 17/08/2024 22:29

Fran is a girls name.

It will be Frank.

theduchessofspork · 17/08/2024 22:35

Fran Healy is definitely a bloke - is it generally used for men in Scotland??

It doesn’t seem to be a popular shortform for little girls now, so you can probably get away with it at home, but Frank at school probably best until he’s old enough to choose

powershowerforanhour · 17/08/2024 22:44

Fran Berry is an Irish jockey (short for Francis- saints' names are quite common here).
Mind you one of the best ever jockeys is called Ruby.

StringTheory1 · 17/08/2024 22:45

Both Fran and Frank are nicknames for Francis.

Call your son Francis (a proper name), shortened to nickname Fran or Frank.
