Casey or Kayce?

We’re expecting a baby boy in the next few weeks, our first and are stuck on the name. We both love Casey but can’t agree on the spelling, I think Casey he thinks Kayce. We’re at a stand-off and need some input but are not sharing the name with friends and family yet.

For context we both like the gender neutral feel to the name, are very aware it’s an ‘American’ name and not as traditional in the UK for a boy. But we’re very open to other similar vibe names if anyone has any suggestions!

Casey.

I like Casey.

Kayce / Kaycey both dreadful, and I would rather choose a new name than go with a K spelling where it isn’t the original spelling.

Sheeparelooseagain · 17/08/2024 11:57

Definitely the first spelling. The second will be spelled incorrectly, mispronounced and seen as a made up spelling in the UK. The Casey's I know are all girls.

damebarbaracartlandsbiggestfan · 17/08/2024 12:00

Definitely Casey. It's a well-established name.

Dorisbonson · 17/08/2024 12:02

Not a fan of either name but please pick a name which is easy to spell and easy to pronounce.

I've lived with a semi obscure name my parents picked to please themselves. I have to repeat myself, spell out the letters multiple times, hear it mispronounced etc etc. Its irritating, I generally give up and i would rather have a different name. My name isn't that unusual, it's not hard to spell but people still fuck it up regularly.

Perhaps pick a name which your child can shorten or adapt if they dont like the one you pick eg - Al/Alex/Alexander Jim/Jamie/Jay/James, Rob/Robbie/Robert etc

Wow some of these replies are grim

can anyone explain what exactly is wrong with a name not being typically ‘middle-class’? Does a name being more associated with working-class mean it’s ‘worse’? And why?

Not sure Casey is associated with working class either. It's American.

Olivia2109 · 17/08/2024 12:15

I’d 100% go with Casey. Looks much nicer and just in my opinion, Kayce sounds a bit “made up”. Also people will pronounce it Case

SummerSplashing · 17/08/2024 12:24

BettyBardMacDonald · 17/08/2024 10:22

Agree. Casey is low class.

Can't you give the child a dignified name and use Casey as a nickname? Think of its future in the workplace.

@BettyBardMacDonald

that's seriously rude. I know it's MN but you don't have to drop your manners as you sign in.

there's (probably*) a real life person who started the thread, asking opinions on the spelling of the name they like, not for opinions on the name & even if they were asking opinions on the name, you can still be polite about it!!

@JLE35 I say you are probably a real person because baby names is the biggest gateway to trolling on MN.

it needs to be Casey. I would pronounce it the same (no idea why so many in the U.K. wouldn't?! ) but Casey is just much nicer.

though teaching him to spell it will be easier with a K 😂😂

I'm a primary school TA. We currently have/have recently had a Casey, Kacey, and a Kaicee in the school - all girls.

I do the same job, it seems a very popular name in our area as we have 6 off the top of my head, a Kaci and Kaycee among other more traditional spellings. All are girls too.

kitsuneghost · 17/08/2024 12:42

muffledvoice · 17/08/2024 10:33

Personally I prefer Kaci

Are you pronouncing that as catchy as in Eklent Kaci

M4driver · 17/08/2024 13:10

Casey for a boy.
Kacey for a girl.
Kayce looks like the parents couldn't spell.

M4driver · 17/08/2024 13:19

You might like Corey as an alternative?

Strokethefurrywall · 17/08/2024 13:25

I like Casey. I know a number of them of both sexes and lots of different ages.

I don't associate it as being more/less masculine or feminine, nor do I have any class connotations with it which Mumsnet posters seem to be utterly fixated on for some obscure and socially pathetic reason.

But definitely Casey, not Kayce!

Leanmeansmitingmachine · 17/08/2024 14:12

“A little on the dyslexic side”. 🤦🏻‍♀️

spaceshooter · 17/08/2024 20:19

Good grief no.

Needmorelego · 17/08/2024 20:26

Why are people being so rude about the name just because it's not to their personal taste.
The OP just wanted options on which way to spell it - not whether people liked the name.
Stop being so bitchy and snobby.

DinaofCloud9 · 17/08/2024 20:39

I know a Casey. He's solid middle class which may surprise snobby mumsnetters.

Brothers called Jeremy and Alexander.

I like it for a boy. Kayce isn't a good spelling though.

BunnyLake · 20/08/2024 11:16

Well that was a 100% vote for Casey!

A bit like Ben (Benjamin) Affleck and Casey Affleck. One a solid traditional name and the other a less traditional one. Nothing wrong with that of course.

Yes, I'd think they're girls' names too.
As is Darcy which someone recommended earlier in the thread.
Darcy Bussell?

But if you have to pick one, then Casey, definitely.

CheerfulBunny · 20/08/2024 11:27

Shocked that there has been no mention of '..and the Sunshine Band'! I must be very old.😑 Give it Up is a stone cold banger.

CowTown · 20/08/2024 11:35

Depends on whether you want your DS to have a name that is easy to spell. If so, I’d go with Casey.

If you want him to correct people throughout his life, go with Kayce. “No, it’s not pronounced ‘Case’”. “No, it’s not spelled CASEY. It’s spelled KAYCE.”—cue seeing it spelled Kacey anyway even after the explanation. Sounds like a lifetime of fun.

PolaroidPrincess · 17/08/2024 11:08

Interesting what people associate KC with. I would have said King's Counsel Wink

I'd have said Sunshine Band!

MelodyMalone · 20/08/2024 12:04

Anyway I think Casey is fairly unisex. There's a former footballer (female) called Casey Stoney - but I don't find it surprising as a boy's name.

He probably will get asked to spell it a lot, purely because people know there are several alternative spellings.

BunnyLake · 20/08/2024 16:19

MelodyMalone · 20/08/2024 12:01

I was just saying that in my head then saw your post 😁
