Casey or Kayce?

We’re expecting a baby boy in the next few weeks, our first and are stuck on the name. We both love Casey but can’t agree on the spelling, I think Casey he thinks Kayce. We’re at a stand-off and need some input but are not sharing the name with friends and family yet.

For context we both like the gender neutral feel to the name, are very aware it’s an ‘American’ name and not as traditional in the UK for a boy. But we’re very open to other similar vibe names if anyone has any suggestions!

I agree with all PPs re pronunciation of Kayce.

Wow some of these replies are grim

can anyone explain what exactly is wrong with a name not being typically ‘middle-class’? Does a name being more associated with working-class mean it’s ‘worse’? And why?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 17/08/2024 11:05

Neither. I would hear KC - kennel club

sel2223 · 17/08/2024 11:07

Yep, another one here who read it as Casey or Case
I have no problem at all with different names but I really don't like silly made up spellings. Casey all the way.

CuloGrande · 17/08/2024 11:07

I also read kayce as case

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 17/08/2024 11:07

Casey without a doubt

Interesting what people associate KC with. I would have said King's Counsel Wink

theduchessofspork · 17/08/2024 11:09

Casey if you must, Kayce really will have a fair few of his teachers’ braced for trouble (I know it shouldn’t, but it will) and won’t do him any favours in life.

I think options like Cooper, Harris, Rafferty, Austin are more neutral and will serve him better in life, if you want a surname feel.

reelcat · 17/08/2024 11:09

I knew a girl Kayce once so I wouls associate that spelling with a girl

No it’s the associations people have with them that do the kids no favours.

I wouldn’t call a child tarquin either.

Casey, I think it looks more girly with a K. Love the baby boy name Casey

I used to work with a woman called Casey. I guess it’s for either. Not keen but it’s not my call. Definitely not Kayce though.

GettingLaterAndLater · 17/08/2024 11:11

Definitely Casey

I agree, it sounds like Barbie's little sister.

I’m pretty sure the PP was joking

Abouttimeforanamechange · 17/08/2024 11:13

Kasey and Kacey are basically girls names.

They are basically made up names.

if he's Casey, he has to grow up to be a train driver:

Kayce, as well as being open to mispronunciation, is pretty awful.

It's also borderline girly.

You've not watched Yellowstone have you?

The name Austin has grown on me over the years.

It's always been QC for me. Have no time for the 'king'.

PinkCast · 17/08/2024 11:13

So your "slightly dyslexic" DH thinks his spelling makes more sense?
Tell him he's wrong, and your poor son should not have to have a ridiculously spelt name because of his "slight dyslexia".

Jacopo · 17/08/2024 11:14

I only know one Casey (UK) and she’s a woman. And Kayce is just awful.

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2024 11:13

The thing is, neither have most people

Personally I prefer Kaci

That is too feminine, like Toni or Terri.

BettyBardMacDonald · 17/08/2024 10:22

Agree. Casey is low class.

Can't you give the child a dignified name and use Casey as a nickname? Think of its future in the workplace.

This is an AWFUL thing to tell an expectant parent.

Dont tell me, you have a Florian. Much naicer.

Also Casey Affleck is pretty well off, so I’m not sure it affected his career prospects.

thriftyhen · 17/08/2024 11:19

I'm not keen on the name and the only Casey I know is a girl. It always makes me think of "Casey Jones a steamin' and a rollin' ", but then that shows my age!

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2024 11:19

theduchessofspork · 17/08/2024 11:15

Probably not, but the whole idea that Kayce is a) an awful name for a boy b) massively girlie is only a British problem (and even then plenty of Brits HAVE watched Yellowstone).

Kayce is a very masculine lead character who is a cowboy. He also has a softer side and generally is one of the nicer guys in the series.

I liked Kayce. But that's my reason for not being wild about the name because I'd just think Kevin Costner fan parents and Yellowstone.

I do think there are better all American names that translate better to the UK too.

Thanks for the responses. In answer to questions/points my husband is a little on the dyslexic side and he automatically said he’d spell it Kayce i.e Kay-ce and would read Casey as Cassie. I’ve said I think the majority would read Kayce as Case and prefer the traditional spelling so really helpful to see thoughts on this.

No disrespect to your dh but he’s not best placed to be determining the spelling of your little boy’s name. I think you need to take the lead on this one.
