Casey or Kayce?

JLE35 · 17/08/2024 10:02

We’re expecting a baby boy in the next few weeks, our first and are stuck on the name. We both love Casey but can’t agree on the spelling, I think Casey he thinks Kayce. We’re at a stand-off and need some input but are not sharing the name with friends and family yet.

For context we both like the gender neutral feel to the name, are very aware it’s an ‘American’ name and not as traditional in the UK for a boy. But we’re very open to other similar vibe names if anyone has any suggestions!

The thing is, neither have most people

I'd have to agree.

purplecheesecat · 17/08/2024 11:20

Needs to be Casey, people will easily recognise this name and pronounce it correctly, whereas Kayce looks made-up and as if it should be pronounced ‘Case’

Casey for sure.
Kayce rhymes with brace.

My son's friend is named Casey but he uses his nick name.

Other gender neutral names..
Cameron
Kyle
Lyle
Alex
Dale
Lindsey
Robin
Chris
Morgan
Patsy
Storm
Nick

Berlinlover · 17/08/2024 11:23

Kayce is chavy, how can you not see that?

Wow some of these replies are grim

can anyone explain what exactly is wrong with a name not being typically ‘middle-class’? Does a name being more associated with working-class mean it’s ‘worse’? And why?

I think it's because it may be seen as non-aspirational, to put it perhaps a little more neutrally.
But some names move up and down the social class ladder over the years and obviously we can't tell which way they will go.
My own name, uncommon when I was born, has definitely taken a dive since!

greglet · 17/08/2024 11:23

Casey, absolutely. It's an established name (even if not to everyone's taste, as this thread proves!), whereas Kayce is a misspelling and an ambiguous one at that.

Edited

You really wouldn't call a boy Patsy, would you?

PolaroidPrincess · 17/08/2024 11:24

That is too feminine, like Toni or Terri.

I always wanted a little girl named Toni when I was younger or Jemima or Floella.

lol oh back I may have just liked watching Play School a bit too much Grin

Firsttimebabymummy · 17/08/2024 11:24

Casey 100%

I quite like it

Kyle or Jesse would be my suggestions

Sunny95 · 17/08/2024 11:25

I think Kayce will be mispronounced too. I'm a secondary school teacher and I wouldn't give a child a name that would frequently be mispronounced (e.g Mia but want it pronounced Mya) without a good reason. It is just so irritating for them.

It does sound like a girl's name rather than gender neutral to me, maybe because I've only ever met girls with that name.

Bailey, Kai, Luca? They are all gender neutral but less feminine sounding.

*Looking back

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 17/08/2024 11:25

Prefer Casey but don't like either of them. Kayce - I immediately thought of Edgar Cayce, so I wouldn't for that reason. But that's likely just me!

BlackBean2023 · 17/08/2024 11:27

I went to school with a male Kasey.

He was a little shit.

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2024 11:19

Probably not, but the whole idea that Kayce is a) an awful name for a boy b) massively girlie is only a British problem (and even then plenty of Brits HAVE watched Yellowstone).

Kayce is a very masculine lead character who is a cowboy. He also has a softer side and generally is one of the nicer guys in the series.

I liked Kayce. But that's my reason for not being wild about the name because I'd just think Kevin Costner fan parents and Yellowstone.

I do think there are better all American names that translate better to the UK too.

Not many in the UK - it’s on Paramount+ which is tanking. Succession it is not (here).

Dmsandfloatydress · 17/08/2024 11:29

I agree that it's girly. If you like American cowboy names then I offer:
Silas
Zeke
Hal
Hank ( Henry for long name)
Jesse
Sonny
Ned
Jameson
Hunter
Wilder
Bryce
Caleb

It's been on C5 for free. (Series 1 and 2 were removed in the last couple of weeks but Series 3 is still available until 25th August).

It's actually a really good series.

We have not forked out for Paramount+ on principle (even though there's a few things on it we'd actually like to watch)

PolaroidPrincess · 17/08/2024 11:32

It's always been QC for me. Have no time for the 'king'.

It has taken a little adjusting to.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 17/08/2024 11:32

I know one little Casey, under two years old, a perfectly normal (middle-class even! 🙄) little boy and I like his name.

Agree that's the way to spell it, though personally when I see Kayce I think Kelce, so either pronunciation seems natural to me.

usernother · 17/08/2024 11:32

Kayce would be pronounced Case, it looks like it's a girl's name, and it's horrible imo.

dbeuowlxb173939 · 17/08/2024 11:34

Casey please! Kayse is ambiguous and could be pronounced "Case"

liveforsummer · 17/08/2024 11:34

Those two names are pronounced differently- first is cay-see, 2nd is Case which one only ever heard as a nick name to Kacyie. Adding the i or an extra e to pronounce it how I assume you want would make it even more feminine though. Tbh I opened this expecting it to be for a girl anyway as I know many with this name, none are boys.

HellsBells67 · 17/08/2024 11:36

Neither.

I know it is, and it’s had a big impact in the US, but not here. The figures aren’t great. I’m sure on the BBC/Netflix it would have found its audience, but it’s an odd fit for C5/para so people don’t go to it.

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2024 11:48

Cowboy names that work in the UK better

Austin
Clay
Clint
Tate
Carter (or various other occupational surnames as first names)
Kit
Wade
Ray
Heath
Marshall
Cal
Travis

There's absolutely loads of them but these are probably at the 'safer' end of the scale.

Agree. We only came across it by chance as we don't watch C5 much. And we've had to binge watch it as it's been time limited.

It would have been much better if on BBC or ITV as a marketing strategy (can understand why it's not on Netflix or Amazon as they are competitors).
