I would say yes they are too similar esp if u see her a lot or are close with this cousin

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/08/2024 21:17

I think it’s fine!

sal96 · 06/08/2024 21:28

For cousins not at all honestly. If they were brothers I would say definitely 😂

They will have different nicknames, they are still different names, worst case scenario shout their full name including the surname when they’re together 😂

tetheredgoat · 06/08/2024 21:29

only if you don’t sound the ‘s’

Firsttimebabymummy · 06/08/2024 21:30

For cousins I'd say it's fine.

OlympicsFanGirl · 06/08/2024 21:30

Very similar but it's fine for cousins.

Reallybadidea · 06/08/2024 21:31

One of my kids has the same name as my cousin.
Another of my cousins gave her child the same name as another of my children.
It's fine.

KanIstartagain · 06/08/2024 21:32

Fine if you make sure middle names are different!

Edenmum2 · 06/08/2024 21:32

Your cousin's son?! I definitely wouldn't care, that's basically a distant relative unless you are very close?

Runningupthecurtains · 06/08/2024 21:37

Are you live in the same area, see each other frequently, always do stuff as an extended family cousin. Or meet up at weddings and funerals, exchange Christmas card cousins?
I would feel they were too similar for the first but fine for the second. I have 25+ cousins on one side, I couldn't even name all their children off the top of my head.

BoleynMemories13 · 06/08/2024 21:46

I think it depends how close you are as a family. Total non-issue if you very rarely see them. A bit of a odd choice if you're very close and they'll gave a lot to do with each other growing up.

Also, will they have shared great grandparents who are still alive? I always think of the grandparents when people discuss the possibility of cousins/second cousins with virtually the same name as it could be quite confusing for them to have two young great grandsons with practically the same name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/08/2024 22:49

It’s your cousin’s son, so the boys would only be 2nd cousins? Absolutely fine imo, - even the exact same name would be fine (unless there’s a drip feed of same surname, similar age and likely to attend same school etc.) In larger extended families it’s almost commonplace that popular names might get repeated.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/08/2024 23:04

But then I come from a huge family where even a few of the fathers and sons share names. If your family is very small with only a few grandkids and great- grandkids maybe it would feel more strange (especially to the Great- Grandparents if they are still alive?)

MadridMadridMadrid · 06/08/2024 23:22

If you are close to your cousin and see a lot of him/her, I think it's a bit odd to choose a name that's quite so similar. Ditto if your family is relatively small and it's therefore easy to avoid duplicate or very similar names.

Turophilic · 06/08/2024 23:25

They will be second cousins once removed, I think that’s remote enough for similar names.

MadridMadridMadrid · 06/08/2024 23:38

If the OP's cousin is her first cousin, the children will be second cousins. At the time my first DC was born, my first cousins had between them produced a total of four children. In those circumstances it would have felt odd to me to pick a name that was the same. or very similar to, a name that any of my cousins had picked for their children. I can see it's a very different situation if your children are going to have so many second cousins that it's hard to remember all their names!

theduchessofspork · 07/08/2024 00:34

Well it’s two variations on the same name.. I don’t think that’s really an issue for cousins though??

Sockmate123 · 07/08/2024 00:48

Yes too similar

merryhouse · 07/08/2024 17:40

short answer - yes.

slightly longer answer - if you would avoid giving him an identical name, this is too similar to use. It really depends how much you're going to be seeing them. I have a cousin with a name the same as mine and it never bothered me (she was older and the other side of the world by the time I was born).

MavisPennies · 07/08/2024 17:44

They are very similar but I don't think it's a problem. I have two cousin John's, two uncle John's, two aunty Marys a grandma Mary, two cousin Catherines - very unimaginative naming in our massive catholic family 😂

Waterboatlass · 08/08/2024 14:32

Very similar but fine for cousins

kfellover · 08/08/2024 14:33

Very similar but I think it’s fine for cousins

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 08/08/2024 14:36

It's a variation of the same exact name.

Tikk · 08/08/2024 14:38

Yes I'd rather go for a more original one if one that similar was already in the family.

purplecorkheart · 08/08/2024 14:41

Very similar but fine for cousins.
