Husband is Greek, I’m English. We live in the UK but are likely to move to Greece at some point. Baby due soon, don’t know the sex, and we are so stuck for names - especially for a boy! I think I’m drawn to shorter names for boys, and Greek names can be very long.

I like Thanos, but I’m worried about the Marvel connection. I’m not into Marvel at all. Do you think the connection makes this name unusable?

For girls, we quite like Penelope, Persephone and Xanthe.

Suggestions for either sex would be gratefully received!

Marvel was my first thought, sorry OP

waltzingparrot · 22/07/2024 15:32

My only thought. I didn't realise it was a real name, thought it was a made up Marvel character name.

FinalCeleryScheme · 22/07/2024 15:35

It’s fine!

My three - Loki, Ultron and Lady Deathstrike - have never had any teasing.

They went NC with me a few years ago, but I’ve never been able to find out why.

BuzzKiller · 22/07/2024 15:36

I have two primary school aged boys. Thanos is very well known within their age groups as the main baddy in the super hero marvel films.
It would be the same as calling your baby superman or Spider-Man.

InTheRainOnATrain · 22/07/2024 15:38

Yeah Marvel sorry and I’ve only seen 1 of the movies, which I watched on a plane and thought was terrible.

smallchange · 22/07/2024 15:38

No it's not usable in this decade imo.

Userusernamename · 22/07/2024 15:38

Ahhh… OK, turns out I’d underestimated the Marvel thing. I’m very out of the loop!

It’s a pretty common name in Greece, definitely not made up!! But I’m glad I now know to save future bullying. Back to the drawing board we go 😂😂

Too close to Thanatos, the Greek word for death, imo.

spiderdave · 22/07/2024 15:39

I'm Greek and I instantly think of Marvel too. It is a nice name though.

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 15:47

I’m half Greek and even think of marvel, and have never watched a marvel movie!
I do like the usual yianni, nikos, andreas, Alexandros etc but if I was going a bit more unusual and didn’t have to make it after a grandfather (which is usual, frankly, are you sure you won’t need to use papou’s name?!) then I love Isidore Iσίδωρος, Marinos and Haris.

Yes, that’s definitely what everyone will be thinking..

Best answer.

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 15:50

Oh and I love Achilleos. Love it.

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/07/2024 15:52

It’s a lovely name - however I had no idea about the Marvel thing, and clearly the rest of the world does, so maybe a rethink is required, lol.

This. First thing I thought of- and I'm not even Greek

Thank you!! Lovely suggestions. Papou has already been honoured so we have free rein this time!

I’m still thinking - I like Ilias/Elias and it works in English. I also like Aristides and Christos.

Yeah same, 100%! My head went straight to a big purple guy with a glove fetish....

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 15:55

In fact Aristides is such a cool name I’m kicking myself that I didn’t use it. But I married a Brit and gave the girls Greek names and the boys English ones…

How about Tassos which is a similar Greek name but doesn’t have the Marvel connection

Saschka · 22/07/2024 16:08

Yep, Thanos, Theranos and Thanatos all completely unusable for various reasons (marvel comic, investment scam, death).

Theo? I appreciate it might be a bit boring, but it’s so popular both here and in Greece that there won’t be any teasing or difficulties in spelling.

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 16:10

Girl names - traditional Athina, Marina, Eleni, Irini
less usual - Evgenia, Mariana, Fotini (love this), kalliope
