Thoughts on Galilea

Stumped7 · 17/07/2024 21:54

Pronounced "Gal-il-ey-ah" (i.e. a girl name version of Galilee, as in the Sea of Galilee. Like the female version of Galileo).

Expecting my second child and completely stumped for names this time. Turns out I used one of the only names I actually liked on my first child and now I can hardly think of anything that sparks joy. The first child's name is Biblical, recognisable as a well-known name, but not overly common these days.

I like Galilea, but it's very unusual in English speaking countries. I believe it's more common in Mexico but we have no links to Mexico.

What do you think of it?

Galilea sounds far more like Galileo that Galilee though

Even among Christians, the astronomer or Bohemian Rhapsody is the far more likely association that will automatically be made. It’s not the Sea of Galilea.

It’s the feminine of Galileo.

Although you could also argue that the name Galileo derives from the geographical area of Galilee...

(I think?)

@Stumped7 I find it completely baffling that you can't see the potential issue with being the first recorded Galilee at a time of huge volatility in the Middle East.

quintessentially166 · 18/07/2024 18:47

If you are asking the world if it is ok, then no don't use it as you clearly are unsure.

tinytemper66 · 18/07/2024 18:52

Why?

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 17/07/2024 22:48

No.

Why are people not naming their babies normal names these days?! Confused

Because we don't want to

You're doing them no favours!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/07/2024 22:12

I guess I’ll go against the grain and say I think it has a very pretty sound. Reminds me a bit of lovely Amadea (the feminine of better known Amadeus) in sound/style. I also don’t think the Queen song will be that much of an issue (since if you know the song, you also know it’s Galileo and he was pretty famous outside of the song… is Queen always people’s first reference for Galileo?!) ,nor do I think it’s too overtly religious. I do think it could have spelling and pronunciation issues (as most very uncommon names do) and this may or may not be fair to her, especially if her siblings name doesn’t have those issues.

Ellmau · 19/07/2024 07:54

I think Galilee could work.

Longdarkcloud · 20/07/2024 15:15

OP how about biblical names that are no longer popular such as Miriam, Rachel, Ruth, Sheba, Aphra, Jocasta, or Celeste or Celine or a virtue name such as Faith or Hope , Mercy, Temperance, or church history such as Justina, Helena, Hildegard , Julyan or Hilary

Galli-Leigh 🙃

MovingBird123 · 20/07/2024 21:22

Related names Gal/Gali/Galia - "wave", "my wave" and "wave of God"?

I like Galilea and would pronounce it as you expect.

Elderflowerbreeze · 21/07/2024 11:56

I love it, and I think other posters quoting the Queen song as their only frame of reference are narrow minded.
Galilea refers both to the astononer and to the biblical river. The etymology of his name suggests the latter.
Given some posters reactions, I wouldn’t name her this if you are in suburbia or an area where there are a high proportion of stereotypical traditional names as their brains will combust. Otherwise, go for it, because it is traditional and historical. It’s a little like telling someone not to name their child Christopher because the S Pistols sang about the anti-Chri*t.
Song lyrics sometimes reference other famous people due to their significance, how ridiculous to say that should dim their shine!

Elderflowerbreeze · 21/07/2024 12:05

VeryQuaintIrene · 17/07/2024 22:56

Please don't. And Galatea was a statue carved by Pygmalion who brought it to life as a kind of sex doll, so though it's pretty, I'd think hard about that one as well.

This is a ridiculous extrapolation and incorrect. There was also an Galatea and Acis. Many paintings depict her as riding the waves with great strength. Those paintings were commissioned at immense cost to display to their guests as a reflection of the myth. I highly doubt Handel was thinking ‘sex doll’ when he composed his opera. Strong women in history and myths have frequently been desirable aesthetically and depicted as such.

VeryQuaintIrene · 21/07/2024 15:30

Chill. I know perfectly well about the other Galatea (classical names are often given to more than one person and this one references milk white skin) because I study these things, but I also have a sense of humour.

SingingSands · 21/07/2024 15:42

It's a mouthful.

What about Gaia or Gail?

SiobhanSharpe · 21/07/2024 15:43

SqueakyDinosaur · 17/07/2024 23:15

Golgotha already has a feminine ending. Just saying.

Oh dear. 💀

GoodVibesHere · 21/07/2024 15:52

Is she a poor girl from a poor family?

Giftsnatch · 21/07/2024 15:57

OP there are so many lovely Biblical names not much in use, there’s no need to use a (controversial) place name. Some of my biblical faves are:

Hepzibah
Esther
Hester
Yael
And although it’s beautifully simple, I have yet to meet a little girl called Ruth.

Giftsnatch · 21/07/2024 15:59

Ps I live in a boho university city, my own DC have unusual names, and Galilea would be tooooooo silly here.

MovingBird123 · 21/07/2024 18:49

I find it horrible that people are suggesting because there is a conflict in Israel, you should not use a place name there. The Galilee is an important location for Christians and Jews long before Islam existed or the Arab conquest of the Levant. That due to a modern conflict we need to tiptoe around Christian/Jewish culture is ridiculous. Galilee could also be a beautiful name.

I like Galilea. Will it annoy you if people shorten it to Gal (or some other shortening you wouldn’t have chosen)? Or mispronounce it when they see it written down? People are annoying like that.
