Thoughts on Galilea

Stumped7 · 17/07/2024 21:54

Pronounced "Gal-il-ey-ah" (i.e. a girl name version of Galilee, as in the Sea of Galilee. Like the female version of Galileo).

Expecting my second child and completely stumped for names this time. Turns out I used one of the only names I actually liked on my first child and now I can hardly think of anything that sparks joy. The first child's name is Biblical, recognisable as a well-known name, but not overly common these days.

I like Galilea, but it's very unusual in English speaking countries. I believe it's more common in Mexico but we have no links to Mexico.

What do you think of it?

Bad idea, sorry.
There are so many biblical names. Please don’t saddle her with that!

^this!

I love Biblical names and all three of my children have at least one! But Galilea, just no!

KnickerlessParsons · 17/07/2024 23:22

How about Galatea?

Isn't that a far flung planet in Dr Who?

How about Gaia?

WappityWabbit · 17/07/2024 23:23

Or Leigh Galatea?

Shakespeareandi · 17/07/2024 23:30

I like it but think of the astronomer. I know that's Galileo and not Galilea but it sounds so similar. And of course then some people would sing that Queen song. But maybe that's quote cool, doesn't have to be a bad thing. I also love Gaia. Galilea is prettier though.
A PP asking "why nobody is naming their children NORMAL names anymore". Have a look at top 10, or even 100 names. How many children named the same name do you want before it gets too repetitive. Amelia, Isla etc are lovely names but there are so, so many girls named the same name.

RookieMa · 17/07/2024 23:32

As someone with an unusual name this is definitely not a name I'd ever want to be saddled going through life with

Unless you also have a god awful name yourself do not bestow this upon your DC

HoHoHoliday · 17/07/2024 23:37

You could pull it off as a middle name but not as a first name.
My first thought was the Queen song and I'd hate to go through life with people singing that at me. Similarly, if your daughter grows up not to be a Christian that's a very strong Christian association to carry. Much better to choose a nice biblical name that's already a name and use Galilea as a middle.

Hannah Galilea
Martha Galilea
Rachel Galilea
Etc

BanditofBrisbane · 17/07/2024 23:46

I like it - though I did initially read it as galia and though you were naming her after a melon. Maybe don't use if that would bother you

Moveoverdarlin · 17/07/2024 23:48

Bohemian Rhapsody was the first thing I thought of too. It’s a song that will still be played in 20 years time.

SnowFrogJelly · 17/07/2024 23:52

Please say you aren't serious

Vgtasd · 17/07/2024 23:52

Reminds me of the Queen song, sorry x

SnowFrogJelly · 17/07/2024 23:53

Legato?

newleafontheplantjohn · 17/07/2024 23:55

Surprised at so many people saying Bohemian Rhapsody.

Thats Galileo.

I quite like it. I don't think Queen references would be an issue. I like the nod to Galilee as you are a Christian.

My only reservation would be that it's a bit of a mouthful.

But if you like it, go for it. I think it's totally fine.

Cecilly · 18/07/2024 00:01

Galilea is a pretty name op

PerkyMintDeer · 18/07/2024 00:04

I think it's just a tad too pretentious, sorry!

That being said biblical names I considered were, Alethea, Corinthia, Talitha..so not that far off myself!

There are some lovely under used Biblical names...Dinah, Keziah, Tamar, Esther, Naomi, Sapphira (not the nicest story though!). Best of luck.

entiredayfighting · 18/07/2024 00:15

Magnifico

AliceMcK · 18/07/2024 00:21

I think it’s beautiful. I’m very traditional with names, like family names, all my children have traditional names, however, I love this.

After sitting through multiple assemblies at my DDs school this year I absolutely don’t think Galilee is that out there.

The only people who judge children’s names are adults. Most children don’t care especially these days.

My first thoughts were the Sea of Galilee not Bohemian Rhapsody. And given Ive met 3 children called Ocean recently I think it’s absolutely acceptable to call a child Galilee.

Tharshe · 18/07/2024 00:27

Oh gosh no. The poor child would be forever spelling out their name and having it continually mispronounced. There are so many very lovely biblical names to choose from if you so wish. Don't saddle your child with a dreadful one.

SemperIdem · 18/07/2024 00:32

As others have said, Bohemian Rhapsody immediately sprung to mind.

It’s a very pretty name though, and being in a song hasn’t halted the use of Delilah, Ruby or Layla.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/07/2024 00:57

Gaia has a similar feeling.

VivienneDelacroix · 18/07/2024 00:59

I think it sounds beautiful, you should definitely use it.

DayIntarnishedarmour · 18/07/2024 01:05

I lived on a kibbutz near The Sea of Galilee. It’s so beautiful around there. Not keen on Galilea but would you consider Carmel or Tavora? Mount Carmel and Mount Tabor are nearby.

miniaturepixieonacid · 18/07/2024 01:09

I think it's pretty. And doesn't sound the same as Galileo. Galilea doesn't rhyme with Figaro!

It doesn't bring the Sea od Galilee to mind for me either though and I'm also a Christian. But if that's what it means to you and where you've got the inspiration from then I'd go for it. Leia is a cute shortening, I don't think you'd get stuck with Gally.

But, if you've been put off it, other less common Biblical name ideas:
Joanna
Keziah
Atarah
Genesis
Salome
Channah
Damaris
Jemima
Faith
Jerusha
Neriah
Talitha
Orpah
Noa
Persis
Rivkah
Tamar
Zipporah
Vashti
Zillah
Bethel

DayIntarnishedarmour · 18/07/2024 01:20

You could also have Kineret /Kinneret which translates as the Sea Of Galilee. It can be used as a girls name spelled either way. I’d use one N and pronounce it Kin-eret .

Stumped7 · 18/07/2024 07:42

Question for those who DO like Galilea:

Do you think Galilee is better? (also for a girl) she could be Lily for short.

OP posts:
BingoMarieHeeler · 18/07/2024 07:47

@Stumped7 No, way more obviously bible related if you ask me.
