Thoughts on Galilea

Stumped7 · 17/07/2024 21:54

Pronounced "Gal-il-ey-ah" (i.e. a girl name version of Galilee, as in the Sea of Galilee. Like the female version of Galileo).

Expecting my second child and completely stumped for names this time. Turns out I used one of the only names I actually liked on my first child and now I can hardly think of anything that sparks joy. The first child's name is Biblical, recognisable as a well-known name, but not overly common these days.

I like Galilea, but it's very unusual in English speaking countries. I believe it's more common in Mexico but we have no links to Mexico.

What do you think of it?

Mary and Martha are biblical. Mary isn't much used, charming and classic.

Other unusual and pretty names are;

Christabel
Verity
Lavinia
Rosamund

Newgirls · 18/07/2024 09:28

Galey is a nice American name which is pretty so maybe that if you like the sound?

Really pretty name, with ancient heritage. Unusual but sayable.
The reference to the 1980s Queen song is stretched and will be less relevant to your daughter’s generation (how many kids today even know that song?). Besides it’s a cool reference and a cool song anyway.

I’m pretty sure most kids know it, it’s still played on the radio/tv regularly and I don’t see why that would stop after almost 50 years - it’s a classic.

OP - have you considered that your DC may not be as religious as you? This is a very religious name. I would look for something biblical but slightly more mainstream like Mary (actually quite unusual nowadays!), Bethany (if you want a location), Joanna, Esther, Lydia?

Question for those who DO like Galilea:

Do you think Galilee is better? (also for a girl) she could be Lily for short.

I prefer Galilea to Galilee, something softer and more musical about it.

You can still put Lily in place as a nickname.

FayCarew · 18/07/2024 10:10

Bismillah No

UnpoachedPears · 18/07/2024 10:13

God no 😂😂

Katiesaidthat · 18/07/2024 10:17

I like it. It is the name of a girl in a well known Spanish song by Sergio Dalma. I like Galilea, but I have only encountered it in Spanish. I find English speaking people may find it a mouthful.

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 10:18

I think you should avoid giving children names that will need routinely to be repeated, explained or spelled to other members of the child's ethnic/cultural background.

MistyHazelFox · 18/07/2024 10:18

Its not my choice, but I do find it pretty.
I like Galilea, but might think pronunciation might not be totally clear. Also prefer Galilea to Galilee.

World would be boring place if we are all named the same, tbf

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 10:22

@MistyHazelFox "World would be boring place if we are all named the same, tbf"

I agree. Also very confusing in Starbucks.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 18/07/2024 10:23

Lovely meaning but it’s a mouthful. There are nicer Biblical names.
I love Gaia.

hermionegranger · 18/07/2024 10:24

It's a bit of a mouthful, and I can't see anyone using her full name, it'll just get shortened to Gal. Or maybe Lea if you like that?

How about Gaia, similar sound but shorter and less contentious? Means Mother Earth, it's a beautiful name.

FayCarew · 18/07/2024 10:27

Galilee to Lily is quite a stretch. Gally or Lee less so. It seems an odd name for a child.
In case you've never heard of him

I'd think the parents were fans of Galileo Galilei.

Moonshiners · 18/07/2024 10:30

HowIrresponsible · 17/07/2024 22:47

Why it's Galileo in the song.

Will these kids at primary school even know Bohemian Rhapsody?

It sure makes a change from all the Olivia's and Amelia's.

And they're so different 😜

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 18/07/2024 10:40

I think Galilea is a lovely name however some posters on MN have a huge aversion to anything even marginally different.

The first time some person takes the piss out of her name (if it ever happens) teach her to tell them that they're being inappropriate/ignorant/rude/a twat and name your child whatever you want.

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 10:44

@GiveMyHeadPeaceffs "I think Galilea is a lovely name however some posters on MN have a huge aversion to anything even marginally different"

It's not marginally different-she would literally be the only one in the country!

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 10:46

And it's not that people would take the piss out of it-I agree that she should tell anyone who does that to do one. It's the fact that every single time she gives her name for the rest of her life she'll have to explain it, repeat it, spell it.....which I can tell you from personal experience is tedious in the extreme!

WetBandits · 18/07/2024 10:46

Brexile · 17/07/2024 22:21

I think it's pretty, but if it reminds people of an embarrassingly dreadful pop song then it's probably not the right choice. How about Galatea?

EMBARRASSINGLY DREADFUL?! In Freddie Mercury’s good name?! 😳

User364837 · 18/07/2024 10:49

It’s a bit grandiose for my taste

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 18/07/2024 10:50

@CurlewKate and what? I can't see what the issue is. If the OP loves it, then go for it. It's not as though it's impossible to pronounce, it's significant to the OP and it makes a change from all the Hugos/Arlos/Amelias knocking about.

FayCarew · 18/07/2024 10:52

In what way is the third best-selling UK pop song of all time embarrassingly dreadful?

goneveryquiet · 18/07/2024 10:56

What about Gaiane Godess of the Earth

Geiyotue · 18/07/2024 11:01

goneveryquiet · 18/07/2024 10:56

Doesn't really fit with op's Christian faith.

Beth216 · 18/07/2024 11:02

I really like it and it is 100 times better than Galilee.

I would go with NN Lay-ah as Gal, Gally etc are awful.

It is a stand out name and I would assume there must be some kind of middle eastern heritage reasons behind it though.
