Thoughts on Galilea

Stumped7 · 17/07/2024 21:54

Pronounced "Gal-il-ey-ah" (i.e. a girl name version of Galilee, as in the Sea of Galilee. Like the female version of Galileo).

Expecting my second child and completely stumped for names this time. Turns out I used one of the only names I actually liked on my first child and now I can hardly think of anything that sparks joy. The first child's name is Biblical, recognisable as a well-known name, but not overly common these days.

I like Galilea, but it's very unusual in English speaking countries. I believe it's more common in Mexico but we have no links to Mexico.

What do you think of it?

I looked at it and thought you’d written ‘Gailiee’, then thought oh no, it’s spelt differently. Then thought that it was pronounced Galilee but an alternative/made up spelling, because Lea in English can be pronounced as Lee eg the River Lea. In Spanish it would only be ‘Lay-ah’ but in English it’s ambiguous

Gall10 · 17/07/2024 22:52

Is this a joke?

mayorofcasterbridge · 17/07/2024 22:52

God no!!!

NewName24 · 17/07/2024 22:53

Yup, it would get very tiresome with everyone singing the Queen song to you several times a day.
Don't do it.

Beelzebub has a devil put aside for meeeeeee!

That's exactly what came into my head the minute I read this and now it's going round and round in my mind

Don't do it OP. You'll have the whole playground doing one of those flash dance things every time someone says his name

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2024 22:55

Well, on the plus side my initial guess at pronunciation was correct.

I don't like the name itself though. It's too much. Quite fussy.

How about the neat and simple name Gaia (pronounced GUY-uh)?

BingoMarieHeeler · 17/07/2024 22:56

Really like it!! But wouldn’t use it. My first thought actually wasn’t Queen, as Galilea doesn’t features in Bohemian Rhapsody… but like PP I thought it was pronounced Galilee. Galilea is very pretty but too much confusion, can’t be arsed.

VeryQuaintIrene · 17/07/2024 22:56

Please don't. And Galatea was a statue carved by Pygmalion who brought it to life as a kind of sex doll, so though it's pretty, I'd think hard about that one as well.

Love the pun !

QuantumPanic · 17/07/2024 23:04

I actually really like it. 🤷 A couple from Love Is Blind recently named their baby girl Galileo. Reaction on the internet was "why not Galilea??" There were a few Queen comments, but not as many as you'd think.

ceola · 17/07/2024 23:04

Bit of a mouthful being 4 syllables so would inevitably be shortened to 'Gally'. And that just makes me think of a galley kitchen

StripedPiggy · 17/07/2024 23:06

ComfyBoobs · 17/07/2024 21:56

Galilea Figaro

Magnifico!

QuantumPanic · 17/07/2024 23:06

@ceola It would shorten to Lea (like princess Leia), surely?

Stumped7 · 17/07/2024 23:06

Ok, noted!

I didn't think the Queen song would be a strong connotation, necause it's Galilea not Galileo. But if that's the case for most others, I'm glad I asked.

And in answer to someone's question, yes I'm a Christian, so to me I immediately think of the Sea of the Galilee and the biblical events that took place on and around it. In the New Testament it's perhaps the most significant geographical area (it's where Jesus walked on water, the location of the feeding of the 5000, where the Sermon on the Mount was preached (i.e. "Love your neighbour as yourself"). I meant it to be a name version of Galilee, swapping the last e for an a to name it sound more feminine.

But I do genuinely want the name to not be overly weird or have bad connotations for the majority of people the child will meet, so I guess it's a no!

This name would be for a girl, not a boy. Galileo is the boy version.

Were you thinking about Galilee?

Well precisely, it was meant to be based on Galilee

OP posts:
MultiplaLight · 17/07/2024 23:10

It's quite a mouthful of a name.

Would shorten to Gal which I don't really like.

There are nicer biblical names (Ruth?).

Stumped7 · 17/07/2024 23:11

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 17/07/2024 22:48

No.

Why are people not naming their babies normal names these days?! Confused

I used to be team "normal names", but I have recently met soo many people with the same names, who all move in the same circles, it's impossible to know who you're talking about, unless you remember everyone's surname. I actually think the best option is to go for something that's clearly a name, and not too weird, but not common. (but it seems everyone does think Galilea is weird)

Brought to mind the loaves and the fishes.

PurpleChrayn · 17/07/2024 23:13

Frightful.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 17/07/2024 23:14

Gallia is nicer

SqueakyDinosaur · 17/07/2024 23:15

Golgotha already has a feminine ending. Just saying.

shiningstar2 · 17/07/2024 23:17

Not keen. Think it will cause her issues, all her life long. People will make unnecessary and probably wrong associations regardng her political and/or religious affiliations. Abigail is pretty similar in some ways and; ant controversial in any way.

loropianalover · 17/07/2024 23:19

It’s gorgeous!! People will shorten it to Gal or Gally which are ugly. Laya or Lil would be nicer nicknames.

Similar-ish names that spring to mind when I think of Galilea are Grace, Camilla, Abigail, Alaya…

Blink282 · 17/07/2024 23:20

Bad idea, sorry.
There are so many biblical names. Please don’t saddle her with that!
