I have heard these, which would you think when you read it?

  1. Kay-us
  2. Kye-us
  3. Keys
  4. Something else?

Kie-us like Gaius

SuperGinger · 08/07/2024 18:14

Gaius

MyBirthdayMonth · 08/07/2024 18:20

Kye-us if you are talking about Caius Cassius the assassin
Keys if you are talking about Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge

It's Keys

No it isn’t, see previous.

As a given name, as Latin, Kye-uss

Summertimer · 08/07/2024 18:22

It’s 2, but the Cambridge College - Gonville and Caius - is pronounced Keys and they don’t use the Gonville at all really

Cattery · 08/07/2024 18:22

2

Keys if I was talking about the college, kye-uss if it was someone's name.

ginasevern · 08/07/2024 18:33

It's an ancient Roman name meaning "joyous" and it is 100%, definitely pronounced ki (as in kite) us.

Yes, poor forgotten Gonville

Pemba · 08/07/2024 20:07

I think it's Ky-us, the first part rhymes with sky.

Overthebow · 08/07/2024 20:10

I’ve never heard of it before and wouldn’t know how to pronounce it. I would have guessed Kay-us. I think it’s a name people will always be getting wrong.

BoleynMemories13 · 08/07/2024 20:12

I've known one, pronounced Kye-us.

No human should ever be called Keys!

Saschka · 08/07/2024 20:16

Is this a child’s name? Julius Caesar’s first name was Ky-us. The college is Keys.

Like it isn’t Mary Maudlin, it’s Mary Mag-da-len. But it’s Maudlin College.

PuppyMonkey · 08/07/2024 20:25

I’m sure there’s a Caius in the bible, or at least one of those big Hollywood epic versions of it, and he’s definitely Ky-us rhyming with pious in that.

Newsenmum · 08/07/2024 20:27

ky-us

StoatofDisarray · 08/07/2024 21:13

Keys.

Keys is the College, but as the name I’m pretty sure Ky-us (as in tie-us. ).

TimeGoesBySoSlowlyForThoseWhoWait · 08/07/2024 21:37

But you can pronounce it whoever you want. You can say it’s caius pronounced Bruce if you feel like it.

moggerhanger · 08/07/2024 22:07

Kye-uss

Toddlerteaplease · 08/07/2024 22:23

Keys. He could have a brother called Gonville.

evtheria · 08/07/2024 22:26

KYE-yuss
(Eye-us)

AbraAbraCadabra · 08/07/2024 22:30

I'd instinctively pronounce it Kay-us.

Longma · 08/07/2024 22:30

It's not a name I've ever come across so would need the actual, pronunciation telling to me in advance.

If I was left to my phonics I'd say:

C-ai-u-s

RisingMist · 08/07/2024 22:33

Kye-us.
