Yes, I live in Wales and a friend of mine has a toddler Ifan pronounced as you say. I’ve only met English Ivan’s, Ivor’s and Ivo’s though (and of the former two, only elderly ones) so despite little Ifan, I’d probably still expect most Ivo’s to be pronounced with an “eye” sound unless told otherwise - even in Wales.

I’d expect it in England (used to live near the St. Ivo school mentioned earlier). In Wales I’d be a bit surprised and quite disappointed.

In wales Ivan (spelled Ifan ) would be pronounced Ee-van. In very Welsh speaking areas anyway, where Ivor would be Ee-vor too.

It's not Ee-van, it's YV-ann. Ifor is YV-ohr.

Elphame · 30/06/2024 13:13

Ee -vo here to ( Welsh speaking area)

Greeneyegirl · 30/06/2024 13:14

Eye- vo. Was on our list for a boy

Yes same here, also Welsh.

Remember this guy from Taskmaster? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivo_Graham

He’s English and pronounces it Eye Voh.

In Welsh Y is pronounced uh. And no the name isn’t pronounced uhv-an. I, or ‘ee dot’ as it’s known, is pronounced with an Ee sound. (Welsh speaker who lived in west wales for 19 years and now lives in South East Wales).

KirstenBlest · 30/06/2024 18:10

@cardibach , I said YV-ann. YV like on Yvette or Yvonne.

If I wanted to describe how to say it in Welsh, I'd have said it's pronounced Ifan. Smile

Me too!
Edit. I see what you mean about Yvonne. But it’s exactly the same as Ee-von - I didn’t indicate stress, just vowel sound. I agree it’s EE-van for Ifan.

KirstenBlest · 30/06/2024 18:38

I don't know anyone who says Yvonne as Ee-von. I know someone who says Elaine as Ee-lane and it sounds like a sort of road. For e-bikes maybe? Smile

Springwatch123 · 30/06/2024 18:41

I would pronounce Yvonne as either Ee - von or eh-von.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 30/06/2024 18:43

Eye voe

Redberies · 30/06/2024 20:29

I say Ee-von!

I've never heard Eye-von?!

BingoMarieHeeler · 30/06/2024 20:31

Yvonne is ih-von to me. Not Ee and not Eye. Sometimes it’s even yiv! Yiv-on. I knew a mum and daughter called Yvonne and Yvette once. Also know a Ysanne.

Girlputyourrecordson · 30/06/2024 20:34

Eye-vo (rhymes with a live a live oh)

Or ee-vo if eastern European as others have said

Breakfastclubber · 28/06/2024 08:50

Eye - voe

Yes this

Lulu1919 · 30/06/2024 20:41

Eye Voh

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/06/2024 21:56

Eye as in 👀
Vo to rhyme with toe; like the beginning of vote.

I think it’s mainly that we are using a combination of the Welsh and English alphabet to explain how we would say it! We are probably all saying the same thing but spelling it differently!

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2024 09:42

With the ee-van, the name Ifan doesn't sound like Ee Van. The stress is on the If part, so the pattern is like in Evan, not Eve-Anne or Ee-van.

Some people just don't get it, so we say 'Just call him Evan' as it's less bad than him being called Eve-Anne.
