I like the name Avery. What do you think?

I think it's where birds live. Please don't name your child after a giant bird cage.

Muddysockchase · 26/06/2024 23:13

Ovary

NoSnowdrop · 26/06/2024 23:14

Hard no.

Enough4me · 26/06/2024 23:30

You have mixed feedback and I think it may depend on pronunciation. If you stress the A (Ayyy-vry) or V (A Very), than it may sound harsh.

With a soft and even pronunciation (3 syllables ay-vuh-rhee), than I think it is a pretty name.
Would nn be Ayyy though?

DS 5 has a friend called Avery and I have met another, slightly younger around 2.5ish, and both are boys. I like it as a boys name but not as much for a girl, I guess just because that's how I think of it because I know someone with the name.

DS and friends seems to rarely shorten it, but if it they do on occasion it's 'Ave' which again, is quite sweet for a little boy, not sure about for a girl.

SnowFrogJelly · 28/06/2024 00:59

Sounds like kitchen scales

Daisybuttercup12345 · 28/06/2024 01:38

Sounds like bird cages.

paasll · 28/06/2024 01:40

In the UK it’s more of a surname. I think it’s a common first name in America though.

it sounds like ovary to me.

ladycarlotta · 28/06/2024 09:35

I really like it for a girl. It's pretty but still androgynous. I have met two female Averys - an adult (American) and a little one (South African) - and it suited both really well. Of this American trend of surnames-as-first-names for girls, Avery is just about the prettiest example.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/06/2024 09:41

It’s a brand of scales. A defo no from me, sorry.

Jessieshome · 28/06/2024 12:24

I thought Avery was a boys name and pretty much only used in the USA.
I don't mind it though, works ok for a girl. In fact the more i think about tit the more I like it!

I'd have never thought of the scales. Based on a picture someone shared, who even uses such scales anymore?

What on earth do people mean by 'labels' ?

The sticky labels you print addresses on, the brand is Avery.

Ohhh, thank you! I've never noticed the brand name but also I haven't used them for years!

DuchessOfSausage · 28/06/2024 12:47

@Jessieshome , the scales used in office post rooms are usually Avery scales and more modern than the ones in the pp
.Homepage - Avery Berkel.
It's a well-known brand, so if you say Avery scales or Avery labels people usually know what you mean, just like they'd know what Scotch tape or Xerox is.

RogueFemale · 29/06/2024 02:22

I'm yet another one who thinks, Avery labels. https://www.avery.co.uk/

Lovely name. I know a few, all girls.

There was once a RC cardinal of Washington DC named Avery Dulles, though. His father was Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, after whom Dulles Airport in Washington DC is named. Avery Dulles was a convert to Catholicism. I associate the name with WASP culture and Old East Coast Money.

RichPetunia · 29/06/2024 03:00

I like it.

mathanxiety · 29/06/2024 03:02

@FeelingHotHotHotFeelingHotHotHot

Avis is a real name that was brought to Britain by the Normans.

I see, I wouldn't know what someone was talking about if someone said Avery scales or Avery labels. But then I never print labels or go to the Post Office! 😃

SilverSimca · 29/06/2024 10:34

I’ve never heard of Avery scales or labels either, not sure I have ever knowingly used a label!

IsThePopeCatholic · 29/06/2024 10:37

Weighing scales.

DuchessOfSausage · 29/06/2024 12:11

@Jessieshome , @SilverSimca , if you've worked in an office and taken things to a print/post room, you'd know. It's sort of like an office 'fairy liquid' sort of brand.

Yes, though I’m more familiar with the weighing scales brand element.

I've spent my whole career working in admin roles in offices, and used to regularly go to Post Offices, but do not recognise these brand names 😆 we must have used different ones where I have worked!
