I like the name Avery. What do you think?

No.

What has happened to normal names for girls? Confused Emma, Sophie, Olivia, Harriet, Hannah, Sarah, Helena, Beth/Bethany, Charlotte, Melissa? Even names like Hilda, Nora, Olive, and really old fashioned names are OK, but people are using such weird names! (Some sound made up!)

Why do so many people go for weird names? As a pp said, it sounds like aviary!

A neighbour of my friend called her daughter Avis! It's a car rental company! And another woman I know has 2 kids (boy and girl) called Bexton (girl) and Lorad (boy.) WTAF?! 😆

Love it.

Aviary - like the bird house

Or scales.

Icarus40 · 25/06/2024 16:25

Reminds me of The Inheritance Games - popular YA book series.

I like it!

Coppercup · 25/06/2024 16:52

Central female character in a book I'm reading

larkstar · 25/06/2024 17:01

No weigh!

I quite like it. I'm of an age where I remember the song about Sylvia's mother "Hey Mrs Avery" but no one under 55 will remember that!

DuchessOfSausage · 25/06/2024 17:24

Ovary

No weigh! Good one, @larkstar Grin

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/06/2024 17:31

I like it - it does have an American feel to it, but I actually quite like that - it makes it feel quite fresh and a change from the Ellie / Evie / Ava type British trends at the moment, while still being familiar enough for others to know how to say / spell. I wouldn’t be surprised if names like Avery / Emery / Ellery / Everly became more common over here.

DuchessOfSausage · 25/06/2024 17:53

It's like Ava but a bit longer so seems samey

Heavenlyhoumous · 25/06/2024 18:03

My first thought is bird cage too, sounds American but that's not a bad thing.

BrandNewBicep · 25/06/2024 18:10

Brings to mind Gene Hackmans character in The Firm many years ago.

Onelittlebluefish · 25/06/2024 18:13

First thought was Aviary - bird house.
What about Ava? Or Maeve?

Labels

Yeah, this for me too!

bridgetreilly · 25/06/2024 18:29

Labels all the way.

It’s a brand of weighing scales.

My dad used to work for them so that’s always going to be my association with the name.

ToffeenutLatte · 25/06/2024 20:44

I think it's really pretty. American sounding names are becoming increasingly popular in the UK these days so I don't think it will sound out of place at all.
I've not heard of the scales or the labels and I doubt her cohort would make those connections either.

CelesteCunningham · 25/06/2024 20:45

Avery Jessop, 30 Rock

I like the name Avery. What do you think?

NO. I've only ever heard the name once, in an episode of Frasier, and that was a man

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/06/2024 20:47

A big bird cage in a dated public park.

StormingNorman · 25/06/2024 20:47

Awful

Kitkat1523 · 25/06/2024 20:48

Not for me….it’s was on my DDs list for her first born…I talked her out of it

garlictwist · 25/06/2024 21:18

My American friend's daughter is named Avery. It's quite popular in the states I think. It's pretty but I guess a kind of made up name.

user1492757084 · 26/06/2024 02:47

Avery is a boys' name for me. It is a boy in a number of well known books and I only know one in real life and he is a boy.

For a girl it is too much like Ava
Avril is a girl's name.

FangsForTheMemory · 26/06/2024 03:53

Awful. With all the lovely names there are available, why would you choose that?
