Miri as standalone name

MumtobeJul24 · 14/06/2024 08:11

Expecting first baby soon.

DH and I both love Miri as a name but none of the longer versions.

Does it work as a standalone name? I think it does and keen to use, husband not so sure.

thanks

I mean, it's not awful or anything but looks a bit insubstantial to me

muddyford · 14/06/2024 08:20

Sounds like a contraceptive.

AnOldCynic · 14/06/2024 08:21

@Frogandfish Insubstantial? 😂

It's lovely, go for it.

Nocturna · 14/06/2024 08:22

Give the poor kid the proper version so they have the option to choose themselves

People will always be asking is it short for Miriam

Firsttimebabymummy · 14/06/2024 08:24

I would go for a longer version and use a nn personally but I do really like it

Borris · 14/06/2024 08:26

Agree. Miriam on bc but known as Miri

Nicebloomers · 14/06/2024 08:28

Miriam is such a lovely name!

FindingMeno · 14/06/2024 08:29

Love it!
It's original without being cringe/ naff/ try hard.
And I think it can withstand the playground and the workplace tests.

Sue152 · 14/06/2024 08:30

Miriam is horrid IMO so I'd go for Miri. People may mishear it as Mary though which I wouldn't like either.

Yes, doesn't mean anything in itself and sounds like a nickname

Happyinarcon · 14/06/2024 08:31

Could it maybe be short for Mairead if you don’t like Miriam?

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/06/2024 08:47

I love Miri - I know a little girl with that name and assumed it was a standalone name, I’d never thought of it being short for Miriam - love it either way!

Yes I agree. It's a bit nothing-y. I think Merry is probably nicer (for a Meredith).

Benjina · 14/06/2024 09:09

Miri is a standalone girl's name in Japanese, if that's any help

maw1681 · 14/06/2024 09:15

I like it, I know someone called Miri, she is Maori - it's a Maori name

CurlewKate · 14/06/2024 09:16

Miriam. Known as Miri.

PantsAcademy · 14/06/2024 09:17

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

My first thought, unfortunately. Only time I have ever seen Miri as a name. The Miriam I know goes by her full name or Mimi to her parents.

Lifelikinotdothinki · 14/06/2024 09:17

It sounds like a type of medical scan.

miniaturepixieonacid · 14/06/2024 09:56

I mean, there's no real reason why not seeing as you can have hundreds of other 4 letter names as standalones. But it does seem a bit nicknamey to me.

When you say you don't like any of the names it could be short for, what have you considered?
Miriam
Miranda
Mirella
Mirabelle
Meredith
Marina
Maria
Annamaria

Okay, some of those might be a bit of a stretch but I could see Miri for any of them.

It's also the name of a child in the rather creepy Star Trek episode Miri, in which she gets a crush on Captain Kirk and he basically plays up to it.

Gorgonemilezola · 14/06/2024 10:00

It's OK but like many popular names currently it's just a couple of sounds put together.

Miriam is a lovely name, as is Meredith.

stressedespresso · 14/06/2024 11:53

Awful, give the poor child a proper name

I read it as MRI scan!

CurlewKate · 14/06/2024 11:58

The Miriam I know is sometimes Miri-but usually Miro.

KirstenBlest · 14/06/2024 12:18

Miri is fine on it's own.
It could be short for something like Miriam, Miranda, Mirinda, Mirabelle. Mireille or something.
I don't like Meredith other than as a surname.

It might be worth checking if it means something in other languages - it's Welsh for merriment.

Dont they make showers?
