We are expecting a little girl and have whittled down a shortlist.

One of the names is Lucia.

We live in Scotland and wondered how would you pronounce this as keen to know of it would be mispronounced often?

PollyPeep · 08/06/2024 22:31

paristotokyo · 08/06/2024 22:31

Lou-see-ya except if Italian then Lou-chi-ya

Molone · 08/06/2024 22:31

I could see some people saying Lu-see-a

Molone · 08/06/2024 22:32

How would you like it pronounced OP?

eileandubh · 08/06/2024 22:32

Loo-chi-ya

SnapdragonToadflax · 08/06/2024 22:32

Loo-chia would be my assumption. In England.

OptimismvsRealism · 08/06/2024 22:32

I thought it was Looshya until I was an adult and met a woman with a daughter called Loo Chee Ya

ToastonEggs · 08/06/2024 22:32

Non English in England - I would say loo see ya

AliasGrape · 08/06/2024 22:33

I know it should have the ‘chee’ sound but I’ve taught two and there’s one in DD’s class and all were pronounced Loo-see-ah so that’s what I’d assume (NW England)

purpleme12 · 08/06/2024 22:33

Loo-see-a

Only pronunciation I know unless you're Italian

FuckTheClubUp · 08/06/2024 22:33

Lou see ah

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 08/06/2024 22:34

I know one. She says Loo-shuh

EricHebbornInItaly · 08/06/2024 22:34

I’m of Mediterranean background and “loo-CHEE-uh” is Italian, “loo-SEE-uh” is Spanish. I was brought up to in a English speaking country and would say “loo-SEE-uh”.

Whereinharrogate · 08/06/2024 22:34

Loo see a

Allmarbleslost · 08/06/2024 22:34

Loo-chia

ZeusandClio · 08/06/2024 22:35

Loo-thee-ya as I have a strong Spanish influence.

Cliedi · 08/06/2024 22:35

I know a Scottish Lucia. When she was born her parents sent round the name and how they wanted it pronounced (loo-see-ya). If you have to do that you are setting her up for a lifetime of correcting people. I’d give it a swerve.

How would you like it pronounced OP?

I assumed the English pronunciation would be Loo-see-ah but I know that some would think its Loo-chee-ah.

We don't have even a remotely Italian surname, we just like the name lol

LauderSyme · 08/06/2024 22:37

Loo-SEE-Ah but if I knew the family had Italian origins then Loo-CHEE-Ah.

Molone · 08/06/2024 22:38

For some reason when I first read the post I thought it was Lu-sha 😂

Lokshen · 08/06/2024 22:39

LooCheeaaa

AmelieTaylor · 08/06/2024 22:39

'Mispronounce' there isn't only one way to pronounce it.

it may not be pronounced the way you like, that doesn't make it wrong.

its not the name for you, because it will be pronounced a variety of ways.

i have one friend who is kind of lu chia (like the seeds) others I know are loo see ah, loose eee ya & Lucy yah

its a minefield!

lucy is much easier!!

Tulipvase · 08/06/2024 22:40

In England and the one I know is Lu sea a. I hate phonetic spelling.
