Harley - A boy or girls name?

Nikki112 · 22/05/2024 08:28

Hi Everyone!

I am expecting my 3rd child in October and it's going to be a boy :)

We are thinking the name HARLEY.

I was just wondering if people initially think of the name as being a boy or a girls name?

Thanks for any answers :)

I know a girl aged 5 …. I don’t like it for boy or girl…think it’s ugly

Just say what's on your mind why don't you. I'll never buy a kitkat again.

No. But I would point it out if someone was thinking about calling their child Lenor or Nivea…..

Don't be silly Kate, they're household products. We've also deviated from my original post.

The more I say it the more I think it sounds ok actually, but the only only I’ve met is a girl.

Keep saying it.

The only one I know is a dog

Snozwanger · 22/05/2024 22:40

My nephew is Harley and a boy. His sister is named after a car.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 22/05/2024 22:41

OP it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks if you like it go for it (at worst they hate it and can change their name).
It's a unisex name so equally it doesn't matter if some people view it as a girls name or some a boys.

It always amuses me that whenever anyone mentions an unusual or controversial name, lots of posters say "There are 10 in my dc's class!" "I know loads!". It does seem remarkable in this case when there have been about 300ish out of 600,000 babies born every year....

Glad you wrote this - We don't need to Google to stats now.

He's a cute boy dogGrin

I'd say it was unisex. I quite like it, but it seems that makes me a chav so shrugs

A chav, a motorbike, a dog... Chav wins all day long. I like the name too.

GetDownkeith · 22/05/2024 22:51

I know one of each and it works for both of them, they both suit it.
Wouldn't the world be a bloody dull place if we all like the same names...and confusing if we were all called the same thing.

It's a fab name made more so by the two fab Harleys I know.

scrivette · 22/05/2024 22:53

I know two, both boys.
It's a nice name, use it if you like it. My DS' names are hated on Mumsnet but they always get positive reactions in real life.

Becausemymumtoldmeso · 22/05/2024 23:03

I have a ‘Harley-James’ and my neighbours daughter is also a Harley so both sexes. I’m shocked it’s considered such a chavvy name ahahaha! I’ve never met any other Harley’s and I meet lots of children in my job daily!

poppymango · 22/05/2024 23:07

It makes me think of Harley Quinn from the Batman comics, so I would think of it as a girls name. But it sounds odd as a first name unless you have an American accent tbh.

semideponent · 22/05/2024 23:08

Motorbike. Ridden. Please don't.

ACupOfTae · 22/05/2024 23:10

Unisex. I know an adult male and a little girl with this name.

cushionfiend · 22/05/2024 23:12

My grandfather was called Harley, he was a fairly ordinary chap and not at all chavvy!

mathanxiety · 22/05/2024 23:17

I'd consider it a boy name.

It's nice, imo. I like Marley too. And Marlowe.

Lavenderandbrown · 22/05/2024 23:18

I rewatched It’s complicated over the weekend. Mostly for the Nancy Meyers set
decorating. John Krasinski plays Harley and he’s so good so damn cute in the role I thought …that’s a great name. OP I rarely tap on naming threads but when I saw Harley I thought I want to read this. My daughters friend named her baby Decker and she received a couple black and decker drill memes so I say name him Harley and ignore any motorcycle comments and in time the only Harley in the world to you will be your son. Congratulations.

purpleme12 · 22/05/2024 23:21

I've known both girls and boys with that name
So I think it's easily unisex

PleaseletitbeSpring · 22/05/2024 23:34

I know a 12 year old girl called Harley.

BettyUnderswoob · 22/05/2024 23:45

It can work for anyone as a surname, because that’s what it is. As a first name it’s awful.

OP you literally started a thread to find out people’s thoughts on the name; it’s silly to be getting annoyed with people for telling you.
