Names too samey?

Hello, I’ve just found out that we’re having another girl. Our eldest is called Molly, which I love. We had intended to call her Lily after both of my grandmothers, but when she was born she just didn’t look like one.

I know it’s a really popular name and I don’t love that, but I love that it is a name associated with two wonderful women for me. There is every chance that this one may not look like a Lily either (😂) but I can’t quite settle on Molly and Lily together- is it me being weird or is it just too much?

It isn’t that I love the ‘Lee’ sound at the end of the names, just coincidence. So I’m asking: 1. is it going to sound too twee and 2. Any alternative suggestions? The middle name will be Margaret after my DH’s Nana and my Aunt, so although I love them I’m keen to avoid names beginning with M. Any help appreciated x

I know a Molly and Lily sibset and have always thought they sound lovely together - I would definitely go for it!

DuchessOfSausage · 20/05/2024 19:58

They're fine. Molly and Milly would be too close.

BoleynMemories13 · 20/05/2024 19:59

Too similar for me with the repeated lee sounds.

What about Lila or Lilia?

SausageRoll2020 · 20/05/2024 20:09

Molly and Lily sound too similar to me and quite twee together.
Are you using Molly as a nickname for Mary? Mary and Lillian who happen to go by Molly and Lily gives them better options as they grow up.

buolaoir · 20/05/2024 20:11

I think they sound fine together

MrsDTucker · 20/05/2024 20:12

They sound fine.

Vimtoad · 20/05/2024 20:13

Lilith

lily is lovely

shoopshoopdedoo · 20/05/2024 20:45

Both lovely names. I don’t think they are too similar!

Oneshoetwoshoe · 20/05/2024 21:02

Thank you all so much, I really appreciate it. Molly isn’t short for anything, she has quite a long, serious middle name to give her options when she’s older if it’s too informal for her.

I think Molly & Lily is fine.

Firsttimebabymummy · 20/05/2024 22:28

I think they're fine :)

Sandalwoodrose · 20/05/2024 22:45

I like Molly and Lily both together and separately. Go for it!

Mandarinaduck · 20/05/2024 22:47

Molly and Lily sound fine together to me.

spilltheteapot · 20/05/2024 22:49

What about naming her Margaret Lily, nickname Maggie. Molly and Maggie sound good together.

Durdledore · 20/05/2024 22:51

Molly and Lily sound fine.

They won’t be in the world together for most of their lives - they’ll just be ‘their name’ at work, with friends, with their partners etc.

Violet17 · 20/05/2024 23:03

I understand what you mean about the Lee sound sounding samey.

Margaret Lily or Margaret Lilian
You could always give her the nickname of Meg or Meggie or Maggie or Daisy

LizardOfOz · 20/05/2024 23:03

Would you go with Daisy Elizabeth for DD2 (I've heard Daisy is a nick name for Margaret)

dragonscannotswim · 20/05/2024 23:13

They sound fine together to me!

And lovely reasons behind the names too.

WetBandits · 20/05/2024 23:22

I think they’re fine as a sibset! Pretty sure they are the names of Kerry Katona’s kids, though.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/05/2024 01:04

Molly and Lily are fine imo - I don’t see how two “Ly” ending names is that different to siblings that both have names ending in “ia” or “ah” or “an” etc , it’s not especially uncommon. Only Dolly or Polly would sound ridiculous.

But please don’t use Margaret for the first name as pp suggested - Molly has been used as a nickname for Margaret for several hundred years (even though originally Molly started as a nickname for Mary instead). You’d be essentially giving DD1 and DD2 the same name.

miniaturepixieonacid · 22/05/2024 11:52

I think Molly and Lily sound fine together.

user1492757084 · 22/05/2024 13:53

I find Molly and Lily too alike, sorry.

Lila Margaret.
Molly and Lila sound less the same.

CadyEastman · 22/05/2024 16:31

I think they are fine together. Congratulations on your PG Wink

marmiteloversunite · 22/05/2024 16:35

I have a Molly and a Daisy. The only difficulty with Molly and Lily is trying to say them together. I find it difficult. Might just be me though Wink

I thought it was just me. I'm not know for dexterity though and thought it was as just my tongue that would get jumbled.
