Jay or Jae or Jane for a middle name?!

Hi! I'm planning my first baby and on the chance it's a girl I have the name Melody chosen.
For a middle name it's between Jane or Jay/Jae. My partner's mum is called Jane but I kind of prefer Jay after the blue Jay bird 🐦

I thought we could say we took inspiration from her name? What sounds better: Melody Jane or Melody Jay

I like MJ as a Nickname too 😊 Spiderman fan

Jane.

Jay is the shagging obsessed twonk from The Inbetweeners. It's just a bit naff.

Melody Jane - though your mum might get upset her name isn’t included too (although you could have 2 middle names?)

Jay always looks a bit lazy to me if it’s not a nn, being just a letter - I think of that Simpson joke when Homer’s excited to find out what the J stands for in Homer J Simpson and finds out it stands for Jay🤣

None. Or if you definitely want to name her after MIL then Jane. Jay/ Jae is awful.

megadreamer8 · 18/05/2024 03:16

Hahaha my partner pointed out the Homer J Simpson episode too and that made me laugh because we love the Simpsons.

I know Jay is more of a boy name but kind of unisex and I just like the idea of the jay bird as it's so pretty.
My mum is called Vicky so a very long stretch to say Jay is Jane & Vicky mashed together? 😂😂😂

Jane.

feliciabirthgiver · 18/05/2024 03:30

Jayne?

marshmallowfinder · 18/05/2024 03:31

I'd go for Fay, which is a much nicer name and avoids any awkwardness about using one granny's name and not the other. Call a pet Jay instead, or a son?

NetMum2 · 18/05/2024 05:09

A Jay Bird might be pretty, but unfortunately Jay isn't. I think your daughter’s middle name would have to be ‘Jay Bird’ for people to see the reference. I personally think Melody Jane sounds nicer anyway.

Melody Jay sounds like a dj or a wannabe pop star. Definitely Jane.

I actually like Jay- and it being a Jane/ Vicky mashup!

I think either is fine - I think middle names are nicest when they’re meaningful, so go with whichever feels right to you :)

TM1979 · 18/05/2024 07:17

Melody Jane. Then get a blue budgie and call it Jay.

RogueFemale · 18/05/2024 12:29

Jane

salamithumbs · 18/05/2024 12:45

I think Jane is much nicer- Jay to me is a boy's name and makes me think of Jay from Modern Family or the Inbetweeners. If you're worried about leaving your mum out, could you go for a different name entirely like Juliet, Joy, June or Jade? Then you could still use MJ

Fontainebleau007 · 18/05/2024 13:28

Jane. Jay is more a boy's name and Jae is dreadful.

Firsttimebabymummy · 18/05/2024 21:22

I vote none. Jane is nice but leaves your mum out.

Melody June perhaps? MJ is really cute
