Madeleine - lovely name (= my dd1)
Camberly - no
Jessica (jess) - nice but a bit over-used imo (depends how 'different' you want to be)
Caitlin - as per Jessica
Roma - no
Florence - nice (know one who gets it shortened to Flossie which is also cute)
Venetia (venny?) - nice but a bit 'lacrosse and pony club'
Amelia (mia) - nice
Emmeline (Ems) - nice
Hope - lovely
Beth - nice but people will assume that it's an abbreviation of Elizabeth, so be prepared to explain that it isn't quite a lot
Anna - nice
Poppy - as per Jessica
Daisy - nice
Louisa - nice and unusual without being whacky, iykwim
Imogen - don't really like it, but can't say why
Sally - as per Imogen

Charlie - OK
Finlay (fin) - nice
William (will) - like it a lot
Joseph (joe or seph) - like Joseph, but Seph sounds like someone with a lisp who can't say Seth (so would shorten to Joe or nothing)
Alexander (alex) - nice
Nicky - too unisex for me
Timothy (tim) - sorry, makes me think 'nice but dim'
Jack - very very very popular, but a good sensible name
Harry - OK
Griffin - no
Sebastian - very posh-sounding
Noel - OK-ish
Russell - I like this one

My favourites would be Madeleine or Louisa (with Hope as a middle name) for a girl and William or Russell for a boy.

I live near Camberley so no way! It would be a big joke in the school playground here.Definitely not if she has any possibility of ever moving to Surrey!!
Hope could be the butt of jokes.
Like Jessica but not Jess. Louisa is lovely.
I like Alexander (Alex).
Not Nicky, but Nicholas shortened to Nick is nice.
Don't like Finlay-or Finn
Griffin?!!!!

Pen74 · 03/04/2008 14:56

Lilibet, how can you say lots of the names are too common when you yourself have a Joseph? Surely popularity isn't important to you if you chose a mega popular name yourself?

TwoFirTreesToday · 03/04/2008 15:04

Surrey and Frimley are also nice

lilibet · 03/04/2008 15:08

My Joseph was the only one in his school! Perhaps it's where you live?

jakethepeg · 03/04/2008 15:14

I love the Louisa and I also love Hope and Imogen. Not keen on any of the others on your list personally.

My favourite boys name off your list is Joseph.

Griffin - nope sorry, sounds like a baddie name from Harry Potter

Sebastian - nope

Noel - will always make me thing of Swap Shop and bearded men

Russell - don't know why, but nope

Rosbo · 03/04/2008 15:35

Cheers for all the replies
looks like Roma and Camberley are VERY unpopular then!
Most of the people who like madeleine either have a madeleine or know of one which puts me off as proves its common.

Don't like Griffin then?
Or Russell many of you?

Ah well.
May have to rethink!

What are everyones top names boy and girl?

OP posts:
moondog · 03/04/2008 15:37

Hope and Beth are nice. Louisa is nice too.
As is Griffin.

Rest are either common as hell or pretentious.

Timothy is a dog's name btw

CountessDracula · 03/04/2008 15:40

CountessDracula · 03/04/2008 15:42

well actually it was a cross post

moondog · 03/04/2008 15:42

Emmeline is Hot Chocolate to me.

Emma Emmaline
Gonna make you the biggest star this world has ever seen
Gonna write you name high on that silver screen

(Although she eventually tops herself when she doesn't make it in showbizzzzzzz.)

moondog · 03/04/2008 15:43

Every Russell I have ever known has been a total knob.

CountessDracula · 03/04/2008 15:44

I have never met a Russell

thank fuck

MadameCh0let · 03/04/2008 15:44

Madeleine - sorry but Maddison. Bogan name. Madeleine /Maddie. $300 dollar fine.
Camberly - Don't be stupid. Have you been to Camberley? I have. What about Camellia?
Jessica (jess) ok not a fave of mine but a perfectly acceptable name.
Caitlin - No chav. Clodagh much posher.
Roma - Hmm. ROmilly? Or Rosemary with Romy for short.
Florence - OK. Don't love this but it's an OK name. Flora is pretty. Would you connect the two names??
Venetia (venny?) - No, but only because I knew an awful Venetia.
Amelia (mia) OK, but what about Camellia?!!
Emmeline (Ems) - no.
Hope -ok reminds me of premature babies. Prefer Honor
Beth - I love this one.
Anna - I love this one too.
Poppy - I really like this one.
Daisy - I sort of like it but not quite.
Louisa - Lovely. I would even find just Louise quite refreshing these days. Louisa is beautiful though.
Imogen - Alright, nothing special.
Sally - pretty but lacks something... better than Lily or Molly though, by MILES.

boy:

Charlie - I like this one.
Finlay (fin) - I like it but I know loads. What about Fionn (fyun) or Fintan?
William (will) - I can't object to this name.
Joseph (joe or seph) a/a
Alexander (alex) I quite like this name.
Nicky - hm, quite interesting now. Don't know a nicky under 25
Timothy (tim) I like this one, but when I was pg, a lot of people dissed it.
Jack - OK, prefer John
Harry - OK
Griffin - I want to hate this because it's a sur name, but actually I really like it. Isn't it a half man half horse or something?
Sebastian - Alright. Seb or Bash alright but a bit too self-consciously posh at the same time.
Noel - I like this. Why isn't Gemma on your girls' list!!!?
Russell - I like it! I prefer just Ross though. Would Roscoe be too hilarious. I like Roscoe but I might be on my own there.

CountessDracula · 03/04/2008 15:44

we did used to cut out pictures of Russell Harty and attach them to the lightshade and punch it

MadameCh0let · 03/04/2008 15:45

When I said 'stupid' I meant to say silly and do a little grin. It came out sounding very cheeky. Sorry.

moondog · 03/04/2008 15:46

Just dont go Jewish. Or Scottish (unless you are one of those happy tribes)

moondog · 03/04/2008 15:47

In school?
I made my room mate rip down her pic of Duran Duran but I let her keep just the face of the quite fit one and stick it back up.

CountessDracula · 03/04/2008 15:49

No when I was about 23
