Favourites?

If I had a different surname I would have had Miriam, uncommon, easy to spell and everyone can pronounce it.

I also like Faith, Verity and Lydia.

Not many boys names I like - Alistair, David, Patrick (but not Pat or Pady!!), Miles

Pen74 · 03/04/2008 16:03

Lilibet- I'm sorry to be the one to break this to you, but there were twice as many Josephs/Joes born last year to Amelias, Finlays and Caitlins. And Joseph/Joe was more popular than Jessica. So I think you'll find your son has a very common name.

collision · 03/04/2008 16:04

I love Emmeline...reminds me of a programme when I was younger with a character in it called Emmeline Harris....I wonder what the programme was...............?

Blu · 03/04/2008 16:07

They're all fine (excpet Camberly) - it's just a matter of taste.

I know someone called venetia - she is always called netia for short.

lljkk · 03/04/2008 16:12

The only one I would vote against is Venetia -- makes me think venetian blinds or venereal... just don't go there.

lilibet · 03/04/2008 16:13

When I was at school, I was one of five with my name in my class so always had to be known by my full name, and now if anyone hears my name they can pinpoint to about 5 years how old I am, I really hate it.

This was a fate I wanted to spare my children from, I wanted them to be the only one in their class with their name and a name that was 'timeless', managed it with all three of them - my daughter was the only one in school with her name until she was in year 6 and then another started in reception, my youngest is 11 and is the only one in the school.

As I said it may be a locality/age thing. My Joe is nearly 15 and while we know lots of Jacks/Ryans/Joshs/James, he is the only Joe in his school year of 250 and was always the only one in his infant/junior school.

I go visiting families who want their babies baptising and it was a great indicator of what was popular while I was pregnant and choosing names and it's amazing how names come and go - we had four Madisons in as many months a few years back and never had one before or since!.

BTw - the other two are Elizabeth and David

lljkk · 03/04/2008 16:13

Oh, and don't use 'seph' for Joseph -- everyone will think it's 'Seth', and that will drive you batty in long run.
Noel makes sense for people born near Christmas, is that when you're due?

Rosbo · 03/04/2008 16:20

No, I'm due about september time which is annoying in a way, as DS2 will just be starting school and there aren't exactly any 'september-ish' names really are there??

Couldnt have a Faith lilibet, as DD2 is Isabella Faith.
Like Verity, really like it actually.
I don't like Lydia...not sure why just don't.

Favourite names of the day are...Romy and Belle.
Might have to make it Romy-Belle or is that too wannabe princessey?!

I just want quite an unusual, pretty name.
Camberley is pretty much crossed off the list now
But Griffin is not.
Nor is Russell or Noel.

OP posts:
lilibet · 03/04/2008 16:22

Isabella Faith is beautiful!

Verity Grace?

Blu · 03/04/2008 16:24

lljjk - LOL - the Seth I know gets called 'Sef' by everyone, so she should be safe with Seph!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 03/04/2008 16:25

I like Madeleine, Florence, Hope, Beth, Anna & Louisa the best. The rest are OK.

Camberly - isn't that where the darts are held? Near Frimley Green in Surrey? Sorry but I'd just associate it with fat men drinking beer!

Of the boys I like Finlay, William, Alex and Nic/Nick/Nicholas (not Nicky) the best. The rest are OK tho I wouldn't use Griffin and I know far too many Jacks and Charlies!

BigHotMama · 03/04/2008 16:29

My favourites from your list are Imogen or Poppy for a girl...and Finlay for a boy
Good luck!

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 03/04/2008 16:32

I epsecially like Jessica, Anna and Joseph/Joe (can you tell I'm a traditional type!)

Rosbo · 03/04/2008 16:33

DH is half irish and loves Finlay.
What about Finian?
Whatever it is I'd always shorten it to Fin.

Thoughts on RomyBelle please?

Camberley

mrsruffallo · 03/04/2008 16:35

I think Joe is gorgeous

CountessDracula · 03/04/2008 16:36

I know a Cethra who is caleld Ceth

lilibet · 03/04/2008 16:36

I'm not sure it's a good ide having two names with a 'bell' sound in them

Niecie · 03/04/2008 16:43

girl:

Madeleine - Lovely
Camberly (dh thought of this! cam for short)I used to live there and it isn't the sort of place you name a child after! Cam is a boys name to me.
Jessica (jess) Jess is nice
Caitlin - nice
Roma - no
Florence - no
Venetia (venny?) - no
(Yes, we like Italian cities!)
Amelia (mia) - lovely
Emmeline (Ems) - no
Hope - OK but not great
Beth - short for something else
Anna - OK
Poppy - No
Daisy - No
Louisa - NO
Imogen - Lovely
Sally - No

boy:

Charlie - OK
Finlay (fin) - Lovely
William (will) - Will is OK
Joseph (joe or seph) - Lovely
Alexander (alex) - DS2 was nearly this so big yes.
Nicky - No too childish unless you have the option of Nicholas or Nick.
Timothy (tim) - No.
Jack - Nice but common
Harry - Nice but common
Griffin (dh thought of this!) - Your husband has 'interesting' choices
Sebastian - Nice but a bit posh.
Noel (Yes I love Noel Fielding) - No
Russell - No I know it is a 1st name but still more of a surname in my mind.

Rosbo · 03/04/2008 16:43

lilibet your right, but Belle would be a middle name and my Isabella uses Faith as a middle name.
Gosh I don't know what to choose.
Maybe a more simple name as my other DCs names are rather extravagant.

OP posts:
Pen74 · 03/04/2008 16:45

Finlay is not Irish.

Fionn/Finn is Irish. Finlay is most definitely Scottish.

Pen74 · 03/04/2008 16:47

Lilbet - you did a very good job on picking timeless names. Joseph, Elizabeth and David are very unliklely to go 'out'.

Rosbo · 03/04/2008 16:49

Really? Always thought it was irish and so did DH
My husband came home today and said 'Edwin and Penelope'
I told him over my dead body!!!
Nice names but definately not what I'd choose.
Edwin makes me think of Edwin McCain.

duchesse · 03/04/2008 16:51

Oh my god! Camberley??? Have you ever been there? I used to live there and it's an armpit.

Sorry

Rosbo · 03/04/2008 16:52

As Ive already said, Camberley is off the list!
