Name to go with surname?

SurnameStruggles · 07/05/2024 19:14

Just found out we are having a baby boy in October and we are struggling for a name!! Our main issue is getting something to match our surname - Ives.

I don’t want anything really popular so top 20 are off the cards really, and I feel like one syllable or S ending names don’t work with the last name.

Any ideas would be massively appreciated!

Octavius Ives - Occa, Octives for nick names

Have you thought about changing your surname, it may be easier

I think a longer name would work best with a short one-syllable surname, especially when it also has a suitable shortening that works too, for example,
Alexander Ives /Alex Ives, though you say you don't like too popular. What about

Adrian Ives
Anthony Ives
Benjamin Ives / Ben Ives
Dominic Ives
Elijah Ives
Elliot Ives
Leonardo Ives / Leo Ives
Maximilian Ives / Max Ives
Nathanial Ives / Nate Ives
Nicholas Ives / Nicky Ives
Sebastian Ives / Seb Ives
Xavier Ives

oo I like Dominic Ives!

I love Milo! I do worry about whether it works for an adult though, but it is one I’ve gone back to a few times. Also love Arlo but there seems to be an abundance of them being born at the moment.

I know a few adult Milos, they wear it well :)

  • no single syllables
  • nothing from the top 20
  • not ending in an 'a/ah' or 'er' sound
  • not ending with s or n
  • not starting with i (or h, someone said)
  • nothing too traditional
Hmm ... Adam, Benedict, Bradley, Caleb, Dominic, Elliot, Frederick, Gregory, Jeremy, Liam, Leo, Montgomery, Nathaniel, Patrick, Raphael, Stanley, Vincent, Zachary

Thank you for your suggestions! I know, it’s asking quite a lot 🤦🏻‍♀️ I am flexible with those things if there is a name that sounds right, I’ve just found a lot of names that fit into those categories don’t seem to flow right

That’s good to know, it’s definitely a contender! I also figured that Miles could alway be used as a NN should he want to use it, but Miles Ives doesn’t seem to flow as nicely as Milo imo

Don't think it's a face palm moment. Some people seem to think a lot about stuff like flow, things the initials might end up spelling, how it sounds when you put it all together (Like Robinngknives!) and others don't so much (and are ultimately relaxed about it after too). Tis just who you are, go with it. Got to wonder if people who end up being called Issac Dick or Theresa Brown or whatever wish their parents thought a bit harder first 😂

I always seem to be the person who points out the initials spell Hives or Dives or whatever after the fact and deals with the awkward silence from the parents. 😬so it's nice to have a thread about it before the name has stuck!

Myself and my other half are polar opposites, I seem to think about every little thing that could be and issue and he just thinks I’m overthinking it! It all stems from someone I know naming their daughter (albeit a beautiful name) but the initials being A BJ - and now that’s all I think of when I hear the name!

You're not being ridiculous.

Consider diminutives. Stephen Ives is fine but Steve Ives is clunky.

If you can find a name with an "ee" sound at the end, that probably runs into your surname less than some of the other options. Jamie Ives, Charlie Ives etc. Anything with a hard consonant sound does merge in a bit I think.

I do like ee ending names, it’s just difficult to find one that we can use that’s not really popular (Jamie and Charlie we can’t use unfortunately). I like Toby and Bobby but they feel quite common.
