Middle name for Athena

I really like Athena for a girl.
The only thing that's putting me off is it's really hard to find a middle name that flows nicely.
Other names I love are Summer, Matilda and Violet. As much as I love Rose everyone has the middle name Rose.
I tend to use my children's first and second names most of the time.... As I think middle names should be used if you give them.
The middle name struggle is starting to put me off using Athena.

A shorter middle name would fit better, I would avoid A at the end too, something like Kay, Ivy, Joy, unless there is a family name that would work better.

Athena Lark
Athena Lois
Athena June
Athena Charis / Carys
Athena Juliet

I’d recommend something quite short and ending in a consonant sound - although common, Rose is also lovely

My first thought was
Athena Joy which a pp has already suggested.
second thought was
Athena Kate.

I think all the 1 syllable ones work best (grace/ may etc), especially if you want to address her as "Athena X" quite often. Love Athena Grace and Athena Rose (does it really matter that lots of people have rose? She will have an unusual first name and rose is popular for a reason!) though agree with other poster that Athena violet / Athena summer do work too!

I wouldn't name a child after the goddess of War personally. Didn't she make medusa? Because Posiden liked medusa. And even though medusa wasn't into it it (he attacked her) Athena then cursed the poor abused women into never being able to have people around her again without them being turned into stone. Sounds like a proper 'pick me' Karen bully (and rape appologist) imo. I mean tbf maybe we shouldn't all be judged on our...bad days...but...

(Unless the curse was actually to keep medusa safe from men and not actually out of spite, that would be a twist xD but is not how the story is written).

I think there's better Greek mythology names for children out there surely? xD

Funny post - funny cos it’s true.

Athena was however also the goddess of wisdom as well as war. Jarring combination seeing as wisdom should enable one to avoid war.

Anyhoo nice name but I don’t think “flow” to middle name matters as nobody says their middle names out loud. Just choose one meaningful to you.

So? It's just probably something I would want to know if I was naming my kid after her.

Also I'd wonder, would it change the way people view or treat her in circumstances? For example, if there's a playground fight, would she be more likely to be blamed for starting it because her name is associated with war? Of course we like to think that adults don't jump to silly conclusions but, lots of our thoughts and choices are subconscious.

It's like the fact that the police stop red cars more than any other car. Because red is associated with danger.

Names can shape us. They can even shape how people see us, at least, initially. It's something to consider surely.

Pinkbonbon · 05/05/2024 13:11

And just a thought, if you like the Goddess theme... how about Hestia as a middle name?

Two together might be a bit much? But I dunno, I think ...Athena Hestia sounds kinda cute 😆

Notellinganyone · 05/05/2024 13:19

@Pinkbonbon - it’s a very popular name in Greece. A good strong name and she is also the goddess of wisdom. I do find it odd paired with names like Joy and Rose though. How about Zoe which is also Greek? Athena Zoe is lovely.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/05/2024 13:23

Go large and make it Athena Marina or Athena Sabina or Athena Paulina.

Pinkbonbon · 05/05/2024 13:26

Maybe it makes more sense in Greece. Pretty rare in the uk though surely?

Could you imagine every new person you meet or date you ever go on starting with 'So, Athena, Goddess of war...' having to have the same talk about ancient Greece over and over. Dreading introducing yourself as you just know you're going to get the same shpeel.

I mean I guess it's no different from being called Valorie or Caroline and someone feeling the need to sing the song at you when you first meet them tbf though 😆

Anyway sorry im hijacking, I'll stop bangjng on.

springpromise · 05/05/2024 13:29

Possibly the most mental thing I’ve ever read on MN, and that is quite a feat. Perhaps Interpol should put all Athenas on some sort of watchlist in case they take the notion to start world war 3? Utterly bonkers.

It’s a beautiful name, OP. I think Athena Jade has a nice ring to it.

SprinkledGlitter · 05/05/2024 13:34

Athena sounds like someone with a lisp saying "I've seen a", so things like Ruby, Daisy, Lily etc don't work. They sound like "I've seen a Lily" etc.

SavingTheBestTillLast · 05/05/2024 13:37

I can’t get past the wonderful poster shop called Athena I’m afraid. Now it sells art from many artists.

I know this doesn’t help, thought I’d post just in case you’re not aware it’s a shop.
