Everyone hates my baby names!

I'm really struggling to find a name for our baby boy that my partner also likes. I steamrolled him with it last time as I found all his suggestions ridiculous and our first son is called Max, much to his disdain.

There are two names we both agree on, not my favourites but I really want one we've both chosen this time:

Sonny & Reid

I've googled these, looked at mumsnet and Reddit and it seems everyone thinks they're awful names.

Names I like which husband has said absolutely not to:

Samson (a compromise on Sonny, use Sonny as a nickname and have this on bc so he can go by Sam when he's older if he finds Sonny childish)
Luca
Rory
Charlie

Husband leans towards more American names which I'm not massively a fan of.

Any suggestions? Are the ones we agree on really that awful? Idek I'm getting so stressed with it as I'm feeling like a lot of his suggestions are just ridiculous.

You need to not care what Mumsnet and Reddit think. The most important thing is something you both agree on. And the fact that he doesn't like your eldests name maybe means some compromise this time from your side.

HopeOneOfThosePeopleIsAMonkeyBecauseThisIsBanana · 03/05/2024 15:28

I think you need to post some of his other suggestions so posters can get a feel of what he might consider.

Alwaystired2023 · 03/05/2024 15:29

I have a really common name for my baby and I love it, I love the whole name, sometimes it crosses my mind that it's common and I really don't care, it suits her, it sounds lovely as a whole name with the middle and last name and it's such a sweet name

Try not too worry about other peoples thoughts here it's your baby

BarnacleBeasley · 03/05/2024 15:32

I wouldn't choose Reid, but I think it's okay. I live in Scotland and it's not common but sounds normal enough in a surname-as-first-name way.

ZipZapZoom · 03/05/2024 15:36

What other names does he like?

I wouldn't choose Reid it'll sound like your bossing your eldest to read when you say the names together e.g shouting them at the park or for dinner.

I am inclined to disagree, to an extent. It wouldn’t bother me if some people disliked a name I had chosen (I’m not sure how keen a few people are on DD’s name, but we like it) but if basically everyone I mentioned it to disliked it then it would put me off. Other people do feel differently though and will stick with a name they love even if it doesn’t get great reactions.

I don’t like Sonny or Reid OP, sorry. I do really like Samson though! You could also shorten Harrison and Jackson to Sonny, but they might not be to your taste.

WomenLookingAtMenLookingAtWomen · 03/05/2024 15:40

I do think they're awful, yes. Sonny isn't an adult's name, and I don't go for the surnames-as-first-names thing.

Get your husband to make a much longer list for you to vet.

In reply to the older comment - yes I know I need to take his opinion into consideration this time, I'm really trying to be positive but we have such different taste it's crazy

So baby names he's suggested so far

Austin
Maverick
Wyatt
Jenson
Bryson
Junior
Colson

I suppose I meant random internet people who aren't in your life.

LadyDanburysHat · 03/05/2024 15:44

@DinoNuggetsRUs I don't see your names as a million miles apart to be honest. There must be something that you can both agree on. I like your names and his.

TakeOnFlea · 03/05/2024 15:45

Maverick?! 🤣 nope, just call him Charlie. It's the only sensible option.

WetBandits · 03/05/2024 15:46

Do either of you like Reuben?

Tristar15 · 03/05/2024 15:46

Austin is probably the best out of those. Sonny is okay, my DD has a Sonny in her school. Someone in the school has an Austin too, so they’re both names that people are used to. The other ones your husband has suggested are not nice names.

Alwaysbloodytired · 03/05/2024 15:47

I vote Charlie but that's only because I have a Charlie!

I think Luca is nice too though

marmiteoneverything · 03/05/2024 15:47

@LadyDanburysHat that is true! I think I’d just worry that it was reflective of the general view of that particular name. I searched one particular, very unusual, name on here and everyone said it was awful 😬

DinoNuggetsRUs · 03/05/2024 15:50

So some other ones I've suggested and he's said absolutely not to (I've been trying to look for ones which kind of suit his 'American' theme too)

Flynn
Otis
Asher
Asa
Cameron
Caleb
Micah
Alec
Remy

Austin and Charlie are the pick of that bunch .

Reid - what book ?
Maverick- where's Goose?
Wyatt- bit close to twatt
Jenson, Bryson, Colson all sound like someone's child.
Junior, seriously hitting the nursing home with that?

CulturalNomad · 03/05/2024 15:52

Austin
Maverick
Wyatt
Jenson
Bryson
Junior
Colson

Is your husband secretly an American teenage girl who watches too much reality television?! "Junior"?😂

It's up to you to talk some sense into the poor man!

@DinoNuggetsRUs I love the name Damien 😁 not so popular it's everywhere but not so unique that it gets funny looks😂

ZipZapZoom · 03/05/2024 15:55

If he can't agree to a compromise given all the names you've posted that you like or would agree to consider then honestly I'd just call the poor lad Charlie.

Bipbopbee · 03/05/2024 15:56

Do you like these kind of names Op? Thinking of American type names...

Jonah
Jared
Mason
Ethan
Jude
Logan
Elliot
Camden

He takes a lot of inspiration from American footballers and wwe wrestlers....

This is the problem, with our son currently his suggestions were River & Robin and he was dead set and in the end I just said no. I love Robin, but for a girl and a lovely boys name but not really to my taste. Once our son was born and named Max, he agreed that those names wouldn't have suited him but I don't want another situation where I'm telling him he has no say because really, it's not fair on him. I just wish he had some nicer ideas Grin
