Everyone hates my baby names!

I'm really struggling to find a name for our baby boy that my partner also likes. I steamrolled him with it last time as I found all his suggestions ridiculous and our first son is called Max, much to his disdain.

There are two names we both agree on, not my favourites but I really want one we've both chosen this time:

Sonny & Reid

I've googled these, looked at mumsnet and Reddit and it seems everyone thinks they're awful names.

Names I like which husband has said absolutely not to:

Samson (a compromise on Sonny, use Sonny as a nickname and have this on bc so he can go by Sam when he's older if he finds Sonny childish)
Luca
Rory
Charlie

Husband leans towards more American names which I'm not massively a fan of.

Any suggestions? Are the ones we agree on really that awful? Idek I'm getting so stressed with it as I'm feeling like a lot of his suggestions are just ridiculous.

Who cares what strangers in the internet think? It’s up to you and your partner only.

I quite like River Blush

It's a nice name but our boy is more of a tsunami. But then again, I wouldn't have known that at the time!

Sonny and Reid aren’t names that fit my personal style but I know boys with those names and they sound good on them. I think the important thing is that they’re names you love and feel comfortable with - see if you feel good when you say them?

I love Luca, Rory and Charlie (and Max!)

I know someone with a Sonny and every time she refers to him my brain assumes he's a toddler because it's such a childish nicknamey name. Yeah I know there was Sonny and Cher but it doesn't feel like a real name. So definitely don't use that one. Can you imagine being a grown man called Sonny, working in a bank or something?

Suchardchoccy · 03/05/2024 16:02

I personally don't like his choices, they're very American.

I like Charlie 😊

JaneJeffer · 03/05/2024 16:04

Rory is nice.

As far as I'm concerned the person who has to go through pregnancy and labour gets final say on the name.

MrsMaudeLebowski · 03/05/2024 16:13

Would you consider Grayson with nickname Sonny?

AlpineMuesli · 03/05/2024 16:15

Alternatives:

Austin - August (Augie), Indiana (Indie)
Maverick - well, Erik? Or Roderick which can shorten to Rowdy, v American.
Wyatt
Jenson
Bryson - Bryce?
Junior
Colson - Cole
Reid - I think it’s fine, lots of people have names that sound like other things (Mike, Miles)

Needanewname42 · 03/05/2024 16:21

What about Sammy / Samual rather than Sonny, which also gives option of Sam.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/05/2024 16:29

I love Max. I’m personally not keen on Sonny and Reid - because Sonny sounds like a generic nn (for any name really, after all he is your son) a bit like Buddy. And Reid might well get misspelt ( Reed and Read). But no, they aren’t terrible and won’t raise any eyebrows.

Of your husbands picks, I actually quite like Wyatt as it makes me think of Tudor Poet Thomas Wyatt , rather than Wyatt Earp, so it actually sounds quite elegant to me 🤣 Maverick is really cool too - but he’ll have to be a certain kind of boy/man to pull that off so I don’t think I’d risk it personally. I can’t really see any positives in the others.

Yours are nice enough (apart from Samson which is a bit big for a kid to live up to and what if hes balding when older🤣- do love Sam though and Sam and Max sound great).

If he likes American style names then maybe:
Max and Zack?
Max and Jared?
Max and Xander?
Max and Caleb?
Max and Bram?
Max and Evan?

TitaniasAss · 03/05/2024 16:32

Cameron is the only name mentioned that I like but I prefer more old fashioned, rather than modern names I suppose. But it doesn't matter what anyone thinks OP, go with what you love.

Liv999 · 03/05/2024 16:36

Maverick is one of my guilty pleasure names but would never name a baby that! I actually love Jenson and Charlie is lovely too

I LOVE Sonny @DinoNuggetsRUs go for it ! And remind your husband you're the one who has to push him out!

DinoNuggetsRUs · 03/05/2024 15:50

So some other ones I've suggested and he's said absolutely not to (I've been trying to look for ones which kind of suit his 'American' theme too)

Flynn
Otis
Asher
Asa
Cameron
Caleb
Micah
Alec
Remy

This is the best list.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/05/2024 16:42

Sonny - you could use it as a nickname regardless of first name
Reid- surname, I don't see it working as a first name

Samson - fine
Luca - ok
Rory - ok
Charlie - like

Austin - fine
Maverick - dreadful
Wyatt - ok
Jenson - ok
Bryson - surname, I don't see it working as a first name
Junior - dreadful
Colson - look it up

Flynn - fine
Otis - ok, not my taste
Asher - ok
Asa - ok
Cameron - ok
Caleb - like
Micah - fine
Alec - like
Remy - ok

IsoldeWagner · 03/05/2024 16:43

I don't know why you'd call your child Sonny or Junior. It's as if they don't have an actual name.
Give them a person's name.
Not Maverick.
Your last list was fine, I like all of them, particularly Caleb.

DisforDarkChocolate · 03/05/2024 16:45

Well I absolutely love Sonny so I'd suggest you stick with that.

cherryassam · 03/05/2024 16:45

I like Max and Reid or Max and Sonny

Jesse

Rowan

IggyAce · 03/05/2024 16:46

My ds name would receive hate on here, and a work colleague of my dad commented it sounds like the name of an American pornstar! I laughed, and all that matters is that you can your partner like the name.
I like Sonny and Reid, of the 2 I’d probably pick Reid.

CelesteCunningham · 03/05/2024 16:48

I really don't like Sonny or Junior - your son is a person in his own right, he shouldn't be named according to his relationship with his father.

Harrison and Jackson are probably the nicest names you could abbreviate to Sonny though.

Mamma1982 · 03/05/2024 16:50

We chose our second's son name whilst in hospital after he was born going through the baby app to see what suited him!

We had Tristan as our first and we both loved the name. We didn't have a clue for our second. We then chose the one we both thought suited him when he was with us. Not how I would have planned it but now it makes no difference and he's nearly three. My third son was named after my Dad who died whilst I was pregnant with him. I know lots of people don't like that kind of thing but it suits him and he's his own person! There's no right or wrong with these things!

CuttingAllTheFlowersStill · 03/05/2024 17:02

I do prefer your taste to your husband's but I can see it is problematic.

Of the ones he has suggested I actually like Robin or River best. I would find those easier to compromise on than the surname type ones. Max & Rob sound quite nice.

Other ideas:
Justin
Dylan
Patrick
Tristan
Joshua
Joseph/Joe

for names that are quite common in US
