DH top contender for DS is
Franklin - too surnamey for myself but do not want to totally discard his opinion
I asked if we could meet in the middle with Francis but known as Frank and he will not compromise at all.

my list includes;
Casper
Sebastian (Seb)
Zachariah (Zach)
Laurence

please suggest some names we may agree on or give your opinions to help me love Franklin more

What other names do they like?

Franklin is ok, does he have any other names he likes?

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 02/05/2024 19:45

DH and I have very different taste in names. The trick is to spend many hours going through lists of names, and to both be prepared to compromise.

Vitally, if you can't find a name you both love, find one you both think is quite nice, rather than one of you hate your child's name.

NetMum2 · 02/05/2024 19:45

Maybe you and DH should look at a long list names and each make a list of 10 or 20 and hope there’s one you both like. If not, keep going and make another list. It certainly isn’t fair he gets to pick out a name, especially one you don’t really like! Out of the names you’ve suggested Sebastian and Zachariah are my favourites and agree that Franklin sounds more like a surname. Francis is much better and I quite like the nicknames Frank/Frankie.

Dartmoorcheffy · 02/05/2024 19:46

Franklin Sebastian goes well. It will get shortened to frankie anyway, which is a nice name.

Tell us what else he likes. Is it always surname type names?

There will always be one you can compromise on and when the baby’s here it’ll just grow on you and you won’t care as much.

Usernamewassavedsuccessfully · 02/05/2024 20:08

I much prefer Sebastian.
Why is it you who has to try and like a name he wants or compromise your preferences? He equally has to meet you half way. If neither of you wants the others' choice, scrap them and find one you can both compromise on.

The Kinder app might work for you? You each individually swipe through names and names which you match on are added to a shared list. It stops the 'your names, his names' dynamic, because you both chose the names. Or you could go through the top 200/500/1000 (however patient/desperate you are and highlight the names you like, and he can you do the same and you can compare to see which names you both have.

BridetoBee · 02/05/2024 21:15

We used an app that is basically like Tinder for baby names, you swipe yes or no and your partner does the same on their phone and then you end up with a shared list (hopefully) of ones you both like!

mathanxiety · 02/05/2024 21:17

Is the baby going to have his surname?

If yes, then he needs to compromise on the first name. Maybe he could accept Frankling as a middle name. It would look like a surnamey middle name, which isn't unusual.

Otherwise you both need to come up with a list of ten names.
You each get to veto five from the other's list, and you're left with a list of ten names, from which you pick first and second names.

Fwiw, Franklin isn't too bad imo. He'll be known as Frank / Frankie anyway, whether he starts life as Franklin or Francis.

Don't like Franklin.
Love Sebastian.
Don't give in. Find a compromise name.
Is there a romantic family reason he likes Franklin?

Synergies · 02/05/2024 21:25

Yes what's the reason for his fixation on Franklin?

AdvancedTyl67 · 03/05/2024 09:31

He thinks it works very well for all ages, he personally would not shorten to Frank / Frankie even though we could not control nicknames at school

NuffSaidSam · 03/05/2024 09:36

I don't think they're actually too far apart. Laurence is a common surname...and he likes surname names.

He needs to come up with more options, one isn't enough to get a feel for his naming style. I like your list, particularly Sebastian.

How about:

Tobias
Caspian
Dominic
Nathan
Damien
Blake
Finley

This!

I'd say 9 times out of 10 a woman will get her own way in the delivery room.

Pull rank! 😂✌🏻

IamaRevenant · 03/05/2024 09:59

I like Franklin, it makes me think of Lord Franklin the explorer (admittedly that was a surname and he didn't meet a great end...).

Sebastian is lovely. I've only ever come across one (my friend's kid who goes by Seb) other than the character in the film Cruel Intentions!
