Opinions on Rafferty?

What are your thoughts on Rafferty?

I like the nickname options that come with it, and think it ages better than them eg Raffy, Raff etc.

Trendy middle class but I do quite like it

pascalecand · 29/04/2024 16:40

I think there's something naff about it, as a first name that is. It's a common enough surname and fine as such. It sounds like someone trying to be middle class, but failing, a bit comedic almost.

I don't think the nick name options are great either. Raff is 'riff raff' also rhyming with naff.

oldnorsesaga · 29/04/2024 16:41

I love Rafferty.

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/04/2024 16:57

I quite like Rafferty and agree the nn options are great - Rafe / Raffy. It does feel a bit trendy middle class, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing

Blackcats7 · 29/04/2024 16:57

I think of Gerry Rafferty (no bad thing) or Raffles the gentleman thief.
Is this a genuine first name these days or a made up one you like?

KittyCollar · 29/04/2024 17:00

I like it ❤️

fudgecat · 29/04/2024 17:05

It was on my list but in the end we chose Barnaby

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/04/2024 17:07

I like it.

FortunataTagnips · 29/04/2024 17:12

Nafferty. Sorry.

ManagedMove · 29/04/2024 17:14

I've only know one and he's in his twenties now, great kid when I knew him. Did well at school, super polite and played some sport for the county. Based on that I say yes 😂

Genuine first name; I’ve personally never met/heard of anyone with it as a surname, only heard of it as a first name. Didn’t think it was something I’d made up anyway 😂

NewName24 · 29/04/2024 17:18

Awful
But then, I don't like the 'surnames being used as first names' thing generally.

PasDevantLesElephants · 29/04/2024 17:20

I have one, but then I am very trendy middle class so what can you do?

Generally known as Raffles, although aging into being Raff to his mates.

useitorlose · 29/04/2024 17:20

I know one, he's 18 now. Really suits him.

Berlinlover · 29/04/2024 17:22

It’s a fairly common surname here in Ireland. Jude Law has a son called Rafferty.

ExhaustedHousewife · 29/04/2024 17:25

Martine mc cutcheons (sp)? son is called Rafferty,so it's a bit too trying hard to be posh in my opinion.

Blackcats7 · 29/04/2024 17:28

@User85468 have you never heard the song Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty? Have a listen, well worth it

SiobhanSharpe · 29/04/2024 17:30

Very 90s/early 2000s, already feels a bit passé.

DramaAlpaca · 29/04/2024 17:41

I really don't understand this trend for using Irish surnames as first names.

It's a No from me.

Allshallbewell2021 · 29/04/2024 17:42

It's quite flamboyant but I don't dislike it.

But I also did just meet a beautiful dog with that name a few weeks ago 🤔

That's what I think. Trying to be posh.

It's a common surname, OP!

Moier · 29/04/2024 17:51

Love it.
Martine McCutcheon's sons has that name.

SabreIsMyFave · 29/04/2024 17:52

I hate it. Sorry, you did ask.

IsThePopeCatholic · 29/04/2024 17:58

It’s a surname or a tryhard first name.

TheValueOfEverything · 29/04/2024 18:04

I like it. I know a grown up Raf. He’s lovely, kind, unassuming but quietly cool. He’s Belgian.
