What are your thoughts on Rafferty?

I like the nickname options that come with it, and think it ages better than them eg Raffy, Raff etc.

It conjures an image of a floppy-haired sophisticated Englishman, perhaps a bit Hugh Grant. Somehow it's trying too hard to be something.

SallyWD · 29/04/2024 18:30

I don't dislike it but it definitely has posh vibes.

RaininSummer · 29/04/2024 18:33

I like it and the name 'Raff' is a cool teen shortening.

Genuine first name; I’ve personally never met/heard of anyone with it as a surname, only heard of it as a first name. Didn’t think it was something I’d made up anyway 😂

Really? It's a fairly common and certainly well known Irish surname. I've never heard it used as a first name but I think it's quite nice.

wednesdayrobyn · 29/04/2024 18:47

I really like it, it was on my short list for our second before we found out we were having a girl. Personally I've only come across it as a first name and didn't realise it was a common surname but then again I don't know many Irish people.

Nicebloomers · 29/04/2024 19:08

Love it

EmmyPankhurst · 29/04/2024 19:15

Naff.

I'd avoid with a barge pole. I'm a trad name person though - think Alexander, Benjamin etc.

anicecuppateaa · 29/04/2024 19:16

I wanted Raffy for ds2 but DH vetoed. Love it!

CadyEastman · 29/04/2024 19:19

Common family name around here so have know a few known as Rafferty or Raff.

Thinks it's fine for a first name Wink

ALunchbox · 29/04/2024 19:20

Don't like it. Sounds too try hard.

TeamPolin · 29/04/2024 19:20

Great name for a dog....

avocadotofu · 29/04/2024 19:22

I love it!

scarletbegoniass · 29/04/2024 19:24

I hate it, but I can’t think of anything seriously wrong with it. Just don’t like how it looks or sounds.

You can’t please everyone!

ComtesseDeSpair · 29/04/2024 19:32

It’s the sort of name which, when called out in parks in my part of London, sometimes a child in a duffel coat comes running over and sometimes a Labrador. I associate it with middle class people trying extra hard to make sure nobody mistakes them as anything but middle class.

KirstenBlest · 29/04/2024 20:46

Fine as a surname but naff as a first name.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/04/2024 20:50

Raphael has the same NNs without being either a naughty name or a surname.

LOL.

pontipinemum · 30/04/2024 10:30

It's a surname where I live, so I would think he was one of those people who's nickname was their surname, or as he got older and shook hands and introduced himself as Rafferty I might wonder why he wasn't telling me his first name. Sort of like someone shaking hands and saying 'Smith'

It does sound nice though

User85468 · 30/04/2024 11:49

Interesting, thank you for all the comments! I’m glad I asked because I would not have considered the name middle class “try-hard” or a surname (if you’d said Smith or Jones it would be a different story!)

I personally thought it was quite a cool sounding name 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

I love it! I like the nicknames that come with it and don’t agree that it’ll get associated with ‘naff’ or ‘riff raff’. At the end of the day, any name in the world can be twisted to be something negative so if you like it, that’s all that matters.

WaltzingWaters · 30/04/2024 12:12

A really lovely name, though it is quite popular at the moment.

saraclara · 30/04/2024 12:16

Raff... fine
Rafferty...way too twee and yes, naff

Beamur · 30/04/2024 12:18

Cute.
DD's mortal enemy at nursery was called Rafferty.

CelesteCunningham · 30/04/2024 12:22

I'm Irish so it's a surname to me, and so doesn't conjure middle class, posh or try hard vibes at all for me, quite the opposite.

KirstenBlest · 30/04/2024 12:26

Same here @CelesteCunningham . I'd put it in the same category as Tyler, Riley and Cassidy.
