Opinions on Rafferty?

What are your thoughts on Rafferty?

I like the nickname options that come with it, and think it ages better than them eg Raffy, Raff etc.

I have never heard this name. Not keen. Sounds like a posh Tory type.

Sandysandwich · 02/05/2024 11:27

Personally I don't like it, it seems both posh and wet to me. And sounds like a watercolour storybook about a teddy bear in a cardigan.
Also reminds me of raffia table mats

Nap1983 · 02/05/2024 11:27

Its ridiculous… and a very common surname

Hope you’ve got the private school fees to back it up. Might have a tough time at a local comp

I'm not sure about that - I've worked in local comps and names are pretty diverse. I think kids are generally accepting of different names because there's more choices on the table now than were mainstream in the 80s for instance. I think celeb culture of unusual baby names have opened things up.

KirstenBlest · 02/05/2024 12:43

@FriedGold The Jasons and Nigels I know who are about 15 years older than me were educated privately. The ones 5 years younger than me lived in the rough end of the council estate

Workawayxx · 02/05/2024 12:46

Lovely name, I know one who is Raffy/Raff and it really suits him. It’ll divide opinion on here though 😂.

I agree with this. My DS is 12 and been at school with names ranging from Frank and Stanley to Woody and mystique. He has never ever mentioned a child being taken the piss out of due to a name. Things are different now and a huge range of names and quirky names are accepted much more than 30/40 years ago.

"Watercolour story book about a teddy bear in a cardigan" 😂😂 so specific lol

Rafferty is scruffy but cute.
I prefer Rafael and Rufus.

inappropriateraspberry · 02/05/2024 12:51

Horrible.

Genuine first name; I’ve personally never met/heard of anyone with it as a surname, only heard of it as a first name. Didn’t think it was something I’d made up anyway 😂

Gerry Rafferty - look him up amazing singer songwriter some of the best songs of the 1970s. Personally I prefer the name Gerry I heard it was making a comeback.
Rafferty sounds like you're searching for Irish roots and I've heard a few dogs called Rafferty.
And there was a song by old Irish singer Val doonican called O'Rafferty's motorcar!

ClipClopperDontStopper · 02/05/2024 12:56

I think Jude Law and Sadie Frost brought into the celebsphere and then the plebsphere as a first name. Only heard of it as surname prior to their son being born.

It sounds like the sort of name you give the hero of a kids’ book series.

“Rafferty Ray and the 14 Burglars”
”Rafferty Ray and the Ghost Train from Hell”
”Rafferty Ray and the Underpants Saga”

etc.

It’s just silly sounding.

You need to follow this up before somebody else does you could be the next JK!

Jazzjazzyjulez · 02/05/2024 13:00

Love it - it was on my list but we had a girl!

muddyford · 02/05/2024 13:01

Oh it definitely has 😂 but to be honest I think if any name is mentioned on MN that’s not traditional like Oliver, Thomas, Michael etc it tends to get slated!

In my school there is more than one Rafferty (won’t say how many) but every Rafferty is a total nightmare.

It's a widespread Irish surname. To me, calling your child Rafferty is like calling it Sullivan, Smith or Singh.

Rafferty has also the (deeply annoying) association with Val Doonican's 'Rafferty's Motor Car'.
