Opinions on Rafferty?

What are your thoughts on Rafferty?

I like the nickname options that come with it, and think it ages better than them eg Raffy, Raff etc.

Same @KirstenBlest , really interesting to see the difference. Usually English language names tend to be equally posh or otherwise in the UK and Ireland I would have thought.

Yahyahs22 · 30/04/2024 12:32

All three of my boys have slightly unusual names but this one I'm not a fan personally, only because I know someone with that as a last name so will always be a last name to me.

KirstenBlest · 30/04/2024 13:29

@CelesteCunningham , I would say something like George, Henry or Arthur are neither 'posh or otherwise'. Surnames are more likely to be 'try-hard' or 'not aspirational'. They're nice surnames but I don't really like them as first names.

George, Henry and Arthur can be surnames or first names but don't have the same vibe as say Tyler or Jackson.

Same here @CelesteCunningham . I'd put it in the same category as Tyler, Riley and Cassidy.

I agree. I don't think it's middle class at all, and would put it in the same category as those names.

I also know of two born recently, so wonder how popular it's getting as a first name.

Naff.

I'd avoid with a barge pole. I'm a trad name person though - think Alexander, Benjamin etc.

Boring!
Love it op 👍

Don't like it. Sounds too try hard.

Try hard to what exactly?!!

PotatoPudding · 30/04/2024 17:16

I know a Rafferty (8yo) and, honestly, everyone hesitates when they hear his name because they don’t know how to react to it. If he lived in Chelsea, he’d be fine.

bombastix · 30/04/2024 17:17

Surname try hard effort. Resist this temptation

RatatatCat · 30/04/2024 17:31

I have a Rafferty.

Either gets a "oo that's unusual" (I.e. hate it) or "what a lovely name". So I guess it divides.

Like that it can be shortened to Raf as a cooler older name!

KirstenBlest · 30/04/2024 17:43

@RatatatCat Either gets a "oo that's unusual" (I.e. hate it) No, I'd say it to mean that I'd need to get used to it. It wouldn't mean I hated it, just that it wasn't a first name I was familiar with.
'What a lovely name' could be 'What a lovely name', 'Yet another one' or 'yuk' or whatever.

@CremeBruleeLove , 'try hard' means put a bit too much effort into something to the detriment of the result. Like the parents have tried hard to find a name that's not common.

Heatedblanky · 30/04/2024 17:51

I like it.

NetMum2 · 02/05/2024 01:53

i know a boy with the nn Rafi (it really suits him!) - his name is Raphael which I much prefer

OzziePopPop · 02/05/2024 01:59

im another one who has always loved it. Definitely a 👍 from me 🙂

It sounds like the sort of name you give the hero of a kids’ book series.

“Rafferty Ray and the 14 Burglars”
”Rafferty Ray and the Ghost Train from Hell”
”Rafferty Ray and the Underpants Saga”

etc.

It’s just silly sounding.

namestasher · 02/05/2024 10:15

Absolutely love it. Still pretty rare and underused. Go for it! ❤️

StrongandNorthern · 02/05/2024 10:22

Raphael? Much better.

PurpleChrayn · 02/05/2024 11:01

Try-hard.

Noyokymum · 02/05/2024 11:07

Yes I really like Rafferty. I know 2 .

FriedGold · 02/05/2024 11:10

Hope you’ve got the private school fees to back it up. Might have a tough time at a local comp

Leah5678 · 02/05/2024 11:11

Not a fan. Sorry but sounds like a cute fluffy dogs name. I like Rafe as a nickname for rafeal (I probably butchered the spelling but y'all know what I mean)

RogueFemale · 02/05/2024 11:11

Just no.

Leah5678 · 02/05/2024 11:11

StrongandNorthern · 02/05/2024 10:22

Raphael? Much better.

This is what I meant damn I really did butcher the spelling 😂

EdgarsTale · 02/05/2024 11:24

Pretentious. Lots of “Raffy’s” around here 🙄

bradpittsbathwater · 02/05/2024 11:25

Twee and try hard
