Thoughts on the name Crusoe

I’ve recently come across the name Crusoe and I really like it especially with the nickname Crue for a boy. Whenever I mention it to anyone they think it’s a bit weird so I was wondering what everyone on here thought of it?

I like the middle names
Crusoe Dean
Crusoe Brooks
Crusoe Jack

And sibling sets I’ve been debating are
Crusoe and Kassian
Crusoe and Koda
Crusoe and Cash
Crusoe and Florian
Crusoe and Foster
Crusoe and Juniper “pip”
Crusoe and Olympia “pia”

Are you Australian OP?

Crusoe Brookes sounds like a firm of no win no fee solicitors who advertise on daytime telly. Please don't.

😀

OP, this is silly, and planning ‘sibset’ names is even sillier.

I’m assuming you’re very young, and that you aren’t pregnant. You have terrible taste in names. Think again before saddling an actual human being with these horrors.

tinytemper66 · 28/04/2024 12:41

Oh dear. 😅

menopausalmare · 28/04/2024 12:42

Trying too hard to be different. Just call him Tom, he'll thank you when he's older.

lovemycbf · 28/04/2024 12:45

Yeah I too think Robinson, it's too try hard /quirky just give the child a nice name

I think people are exaggerating as usual how bad things would be with this name. It's not my preference, it doesn't sound that nice, but names are much more varied and different than they used to be due to internationalization and people wanting 'unique' names.

I felt sorry for the boy at my uni called 'Satchel' but it isn't as bad as that.

I don't love it but people aren't going to recoil in horror at the name in your average primary school these days. I don't see a massive difference between Caleb or Sonny or Jax and Crusoe myself.

Dacadactyl · 28/04/2024 12:48

I think all those names are truly awful, sorry OP.

Vastlyoverrated · 28/04/2024 12:50

I know a 'Foster', it's fine.

Olympia is a fab name.

Juniper- if it were 'Juni' for a girl, that's cute.

Kassian and Koda are suffering from the K for Kardashian problem, but it didn't hold them back! (I would not name anyone with a K although Karola and names like that are popular in Eastern Europe and some look fine).

I think the nickname for Crusoe is Cruz though, like Cruz Beckham...not Crue, which sounds odder.

PineappleTime · 28/04/2024 12:53

Awful awful awful

takemeawayagain · 28/04/2024 12:39

Jesus Christ, Crusoe and Juniper? This has got to be a wind up, you're naming people, not dogs.

Crusoe and Friday might be preferable.
😉😁😁

Crusoe and Cash sounds like an action film

Maybe go with Tango rather than Crusoe

No, Cruz is Spanish for ‘Cross’, and is a common surname and placename (Penelope Cruz, Santa Cruz etc), sometimes used as a first name too. Crusoe was a name Defoe invented for his fictional character as an anglicisation of the German name Kreutznauer.

Floralnomad · 28/04/2024 13:06

Awful , as is Crue .

Packingcubesqueen · 28/04/2024 13:06

I like it. Just name them what you like. Other people will soon get used to it.

tsmainsqueeze · 28/04/2024 13:06

Pretentious and awful.

CocoapuffPuff · 28/04/2024 13:07

Awful.

momtoboys · 28/04/2024 13:09

You must have known what the responses would be before you posted this!

Vastlyoverrated · 28/04/2024 13:09

@LineMadeByWalking I meant more I'd choose the nickname 'Cruz' over 'Crue', your nickname can be whatever you want it to be, especially if you choose a (made-up) first name like Crusoe!

AnnaKristie · 28/04/2024 13:10

Please don't do this.

pinkdelight · 28/04/2024 13:10

How about siblings called Holmes and Watson?

Pantaloons99 · 28/04/2024 13:11

It sounds awful, definitely no.

Houseinawood · 28/04/2024 13:12

IsadoraQuagmire · 28/04/2024 12:28

Yes, of course they would. That will be the first thing anyone thinks when they see "Crusoe"

This but you could chose something you can shorten

I like strong names and biblical names. - but I wouldn’t call a child Goliath for example

Satchel for absolute fuckssake!! Good 'sibset' possibilities though. I won't list them...

OP is this inspired by the Defoe novel? If so what's your view on it? You do know the character of Robinson Crusoe himself is a slave trader (he's actually enslaved at one bit too for full disclosure but still)? It's not just a fun island adventure novel. It is pretty dark in places. Of course it was written in a very different era but the protagonist and relationships display some racial and colonial attitudes that are quite unsavoury now. I'm not one for condemning everything that doesn't stand up to modern ideals. I certainly don't think the novel should be censored but I would think you were pretty ignorant using this as a name, I'm afraid.

Crue is horrible, 'cru' means means 'raw' or crude.

Sweetcheesecake · 28/04/2024 13:19

Hideous name.
I like unusual names, but Crusoe is, in my mind, just Robinson, pirate, or somebody who is always stumbling out of a pub with a crap nickname.
