Alternatives to Allegra

DC2 is due in the summer and if a girl my DP is set on the name Allegra.
I don't hate it but I also don't love it. The problem is I can't think of any other girls' names I really like this time around. 🙈

Our daughter has quite a rare gender neutral name and although I know the names don't have to be matchy-matchy Allegra just feels super frilly in comparison to me, whereas DP sees it as a 'strong' name.

So my question is, are there any strong but not too frilly or too popular girls (or other unisex) names out there? I'm completely stumped.

TIA.

Sorry but it makes me think of that awful old car, the Allegro! Don't do that to your baby girl.

I love Allegra.

Can you reveal anything that is of importance to you for us to narrow down suggestions, such as letters, syllables, is meaning of importance?

Another one who thinks of a car. Wanted to suggest Cortina.

lunar1 · 15/04/2024 16:35

DS1 has a friend called Allegra, it's suits here perfectly and she's definitely not frilly!

Allegra is lovely, but if you don't love it, maybe choose a different name.
Why unisex though?

How about Alexis?

It's the name of my antihistamine so thought you were asking for advice. I'm not meaning that in an unkind way just didn't know if you knew that.

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/04/2024 17:28

Athena
Nora
Joan
Morven

FlyingPizzaMonkey · 15/04/2024 18:39

Well if you don’t love it, you can’t use it. Him being set on it is irrelevant. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t like it personally, it’s a bit pretentious and harsh sounding.

salamithumbs · 15/04/2024 19:44

Hmm I know Allegra is a musical term and means happy in Italian, but to me it still sounds like an allergy medicine 😬
For something that's not frilly and not too common, how about:
Adele
April
Ailsa
Ania
Bryony
Cassia
Eleri
Elsa
Elise
Hazel
Indigo
Juno
Juniper
Madeline
Miranda
Maeve
Mara
Naomi
Rowena
Robyn
Stella
Seren
Sadie
Tessa
Talia
Viola
Vivienne

Thanks for asking.

We have Irish, Scottish and Italian connections and I am also like quite a few Welsh names.

Essentially names that are rare or very underused without being ridiculous is what we're after.

A few people have mentioned Seren, which I love but we already have one in the family.

Eleri is lovely - I will suggest this.

Ari (one of my fave names ever) got vetoed last time but I also like Ariadne so will see if I can sneak it in.

Middle name we both agree on starts with an M so ideally not another M as a first name.

Have also suggested we use the middle name as the first name, which is still an option, but think we would prefer another first name if possible.
